Just because I'm bored it doesn't mean I'm jumping the ship. I just wanna know what's next and what else they can do to annoy me.

I didn't mean to imply that you were jumping ship. I'm in the same boat, I can't wait to see what the WP7 team has in store, even if I feel like they should speed it all up and even if I'm pissed at the update situation, mostly because that's why I bailed on Android. Hey, I just signed a two year* contract with a Windows Phone, I ain't going anywhere.

*
I can bail on the platform after 18 months.

Oh, you didn't know this? It's like the article says, Samsung screwed up the whole NoDo roll-out and of course they got away with it, they're Samsung. Microsoft needs them as a Windows Phone partner more than Samsung needs Windows Phone.

Sounds like it should be illegal or something. Buying a phone only to find out the hardware marker borked the phone so it cannot get updates. I would be furious. Sucks that Microsoft is trying to be more consumer oriented about updateds and unifying the OS experience when crap manufacturers like Samsung do all they can to mess that up.

I don't understand WhatsApp. It had that update to send videos, but I can't select videos or if go to attachments and choose the camera I can't switch to video. I can receive videos, however.

It had the ability to receive videos and audio tracks from the beginning.

Samsung is surprisingly not ignoring Windows Phone and brings their multi platform ChatOn app to Windows Phone as well. That's nice, I guess.

And god fucking Christ, Microsoft and their fucking focus group bullshit.

Who gives a shit if people request it or not. He even admitted that it's a good idea, so build it in, goddammit .

This is why he is not Steve Job, knowing what people want before they actually do themselves and executed on it. Yes what a fucking moron. Also why do we still don't have gapless playback or screen capture is beyond me. Well at least my keyboard didn't disappear as I type this.

The OS was so fresh, so innovative and packed with so much new takes that you have to wonder if they have anything left to surprise us with for Apollo.

I hope they don't let it grow stale like ios.

MS doesn't seem to think it's important to separate ringer/notifications volume and media playback volume either. Even though every review of WP7 ever written has complained about it and really it seems like the most fucking obvious thing ever in phone history.

I'm still really happy with WP, granted I haven't had it as long as others (since May) or maybe I don't utilize it in the same way to point where it doen't do what I need it to do. I'm not really in a rush for new hardware since my Focus work great still, but the Lumia 800 or 900 could temp me to upgrade.

The apparently complete lack of urgency on improving and updating the platform is the most mystifying thing about the WP7 initiative at MS. They arrive to the market incredibly late, with a platform which is feature-incomplete at launch compared to the mature platforms which dominate the market already, and then they sit around and do nothing for a year while everyone ignores them. I mean, does MS have anything resembling a panic button which somebody can push? What is the POINT of having a smartphone platform at this point, if they aren't willing to try to succeed with it?

Everything about MS screams slow, lazy, and decaying monopolist. This is fine with Windows and Office where their dominance will go eternally unchallenged, but the MS which competed fiercely to enter a new market with Xbox seems to be completely extinct. Does MS know that they are getting their asses handed to them by iOS and Android? Do they even care, since employees at MS are just shuffled from one position to another when projects are canned? Nobody at MS seems motivated to compete anymore, they'll just kill a project like Zune or Kin and move on to the next failure, forever shielded by the cushy profit stream of Windows and Office.

Stopgapp solution to keep a little bit of mindshare while they prep the Windows 8 domination.

Yeah, that's one of the few things which I prefer android for. Seems like such a stupid oversight.

Windows Phone came out doing things differently (and better) than everyone else and providing features that no other platform has, but he's a moron because of a few missing features? Come on man LOL

So Thurrot agrees with us that this is ms bowing to carrier/oem demands and as such the balance of power was removed from customers hands (by power I mean easily available information about which networks were good at bringing updates to the table, as customers could choose to avoid them).

Still maintain nothing's changed?

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/microsoft-its-business-as-usual-with-windows-phone-updates/11584

Greg Sullivan, Senior Product Manager on Windows Phone with whom I spoke by phone on January 7, said

“Nothing has changed in regard to how we work with carriers to deliver Windows Phone updates to our customers,” Sullivan said.

I would love to see a MS designed phone. Imagine a WP7 phone that looked like Zune HD.

LOL? Seriously?

Yes I agree with others that he is a moron for thinking feature are not want or needed because it did not top that silly suggestion page they put up.

Have you see that suggestion app? Why do we need to even suggest things like screen cap, volume control, gapless playback ...

Anyway it seems they are doing damaged control and that nothing have changed just like Brotkasten said...

MS is delusional if they think people will buy Windows 8 on a phone just because it's Windows.

I think they want to move beyond the phone companies with windows 8.... Carriers are the primary reason wp7/android/ios are being held back.

I would love for windows 8 to come out on a "tablet" that is a 4-5 inch device with a lte data (so you only need a data plan) that is powered by skype for phone/messaging services. Even better if that lightsquared service could get off the ground and we could cut out the carrier completely.

Honestly if Microsoft had their shit together and had released a phone in 2009 that looked like the Zune HD running WP7.5 and named it the Metro Phone.....they would be on top right now.

Also, does anyone know of any games that work cross platform between iphone/android/wp7?
The only game I know is Words by Post so I can play Scrabble with my friends, but no other games we want to play are cross platform. Does anyone happen to know any?

Are there multiplayer games that are in all three platforms but aren't cross platform? If do, maybe its an Xbox Live limitation? They haven't allowed that on the Xbox for sure

Imagine...

Well there doesn't seem to be many games that are on all 3 (much less have multiplayer). That's why I ask.

Well, the carriers will only allow devices they approve of on their networks.

Lightsquared is still unable to prove their planned network doesn't interfere with GPS, so it would be unwise to pin any hopes on them at this point.

If doing an end-run around carriers were that easy, someone would have done it already.

MS just needs to sell 5 inch tablets and hook up with sprint / verizon/ att and just intergrated skype .

With Skype they have VOIP to land lines . Thats all I need. I barely make phone calls now

They've got until Fall starts. If MS can't seem to get their shit together by then iPhone 5 or whatever the new Nexus variant is will be mine. I refuse to get anything else because of shit like this.

Ha!, the beauty of android's perpetual beta status. We know things can (and usually do) always get better.

:-P

The obvious answer would be that they are trying to prioritize features based on how many people want them. That said, I don't think people have to suggest the obvious ones, but they are doing it anyway.

I don't know why people always seem to forget that iOS was missing a lot of standard functionality, similar to the stuff you're complaining about, until version 3 hit.

Yeah, unfortunately there isn't. Windows Phone still hasn't caught the attention of some of the big mobile game developers like Zynga. Wordfeud is in the works, so that'll be one more.

They were first to market. MS doesn't have this advantage. Android when it first came out received updates very quickly. Why is the biggest software company in the world taking so long to add the smallest of features?

They are put in a unique position where they are required to both innovate and catch up at the same time, not really an easy place to be. I don't disagree with you, I just thinking calling the man a "fucking moron" for not including certain standard features is a bit much when iOS and Android were in a similar situation at that point in their product cycle.

Android still doesnt have gapless playback and the screenshot taking ability was only added late last year in an update available on just one handset.

the difference of course is that Android's open nature means that developers--and the manufactures too for that matter--were able to fill the gaps long before before Google got around to many of the missing features

You are now putting words in my mouth. He is a moron for his idiotic response that it's a good idea but not a "wanted" feature because it is not on that stupid Windows Phone wish list.

I love Windows Phone, I love the UI and I like Joe Belfiore but saying thing like well we don't have enough resource to do it and go put what you want on our wish list to see what get implement is pretty moronic don't you think ? considering he is suppose to be the vision behind Windows Phone. If he can't see to implement the basic expected standards that are on the other two leading mobile OS then I don't know what else to say.

And yes Android an iOS DID missing many of the features they have now, they are however have most of the marketshare and it's Windows Phone that need to be up to parity now not three years from now. They have make big stride with Mango but I still feel Mango is about 6 months behind where they should be.

May be Google is the only one understanding the mobile market and they dominated because they know what carriers and OEM want. May be if Microsoft wants marketshare this is the road they will have to travel.

I don't interpret "Check out uservoice" as him saying it isn't wanted. I view that as a more of a redirection to the correct forum for submitting feature requests. Like he said, there are a lot of good ideas. Some come from the feature suggestions, some come internally, and some are just good old catch up. Uservoice is a tool that allows them to gauge how important it is to the community. Not sure why this is such a problem. The more people want something, the higher it goes on the list. Is one guy on twitter's "good idea" more important than 3,000 people's "good idea" on Uservoice?

Joe and Brandon's interaction with the community is a GOOD thing.

Maybe they don't know what polycarbonate is?

There were rumors earlier that it'd be metallic as well, guess we'll find out tomorrow.
