Halo 4 Announced (MS Conf, 2012, Start Of New Trilogy)

I'm glad this will be on 360. I don't feel like buying a new console anytime soon as Halo is one of the few series that would make me go against that.

Base movement speed isn't really solving anything, design wise, on its own.

That's where you are wrong. If Halo was just the campaign they could do whatever they wanted but with multiplayer included, the main overall feel of the game needs to translate across both modes.

In multiplayer, base movement speed, jump height, gravity and momentum are vitally important. Level design can be instantly broken if they aren't tweaked quite right (remember the jump in the centre water circle of Powerhouse during the Beta?).

Reach doesn't feel like regular Halo and it wasn't meant to feel that way. It was deliberate but the tweaking done after the Beta was to meet fans halfway between expectations and the designer's intent. You were a Spartan III not a Spartan II and the differences were intended.

Going back to Halo 4 should mean a return to Spartan II's in the multiplayer and single player. The Chief wouldn't even blink at the powerhouse jump. Nailing base movement is nailing the feel of Halo and it needs to be done.

It's all relative to the scale of the game and movement of the enemies. Base movement speed isn't really solving anything, design wise, on its own.

Hum both evade and sprint are options I like, and I'm also fond of hovering, although I think the jetpack from Reach is too much and has no place in a faster paced game.

I would like a "boosting" option, something that can propel you forward faster if the terrain is flat, or get you to higher grounds if you use it in conjunction with a slope. It might also be used as an evading capability, but one that forces you to push forward but gets you out of a cross fire for example.
Vanquish has a nice solution, but I don't see its gamplay ported to an FPS feasible and MJOLNIR knee thrusters would probably drive fans angry.

I can dream myself pushing through a map with thrusters motion, fragging happily then thrusting some more on a slope and happily landing on vehicle or sticking it with a grenade while in mid-air.

All in all, whatever capability I have, I want to be able to shoot while using it.

Truth.

Base movement is of critical importance to nailing that feel of Halo that fans want and expect. 360 degree sprint is a nice feature if they can design it in a way that doesn't alter the core Halo sandbox, or take away from the golden tripod of guns, grenades and melee.

The risk you have with including these peripheral features is that players adopt them like they would a jump, or a strafe, and then the complete core of combat is changed. I think most of all what I want to see out of Halo 4 is a return to that core combat feel from 2 and 3, and as such I'm wary of them adding all these extra features that could potentially muddy the overall design.

I'd be content with a hit scan BR and a return to pre-Reach levels of gravity, movement speed and jump height.

But that's just me and I appreciate that this isn't what everyone wants.

Strafing to dodge isn't as exciting as switching on the turbo at the last second to dodge a quick projectile.

And this would only be for campaign
I don't think there's much chance of them including a feature in Singleplayer but excluding it for multiplayer. I think they want both modes to co-exist and not present separate interpretations of how Halo plays. They want to nail that Halo feel, and show people they're good custodians to that extent, how would it look if they've two modes that, to an extent, do not play the same.

you're probably right. I wish they don't limit themselves though. I want campaign to be crazy.

Change that to pre-Halo 3 levels of movement and we'll talk. People always seem to forget that you were just as much of a snail in that game. Reach was not the main offender in that regard - at least I have the option to move faster than a Floridian retiree playing shuffleboard.

Halo covers have gone from in your face Man-tank in pastel colors, to a mechanical gunslinger in a subdued yet more electric color scheme (and see no guns on halo 4 placeholder, probably as to not stir controversy reagarind AR/BR and dual holding)

You are the Controller, Masterchief is the Gun.

I don't dare imagine where that puts Cortana.

Coming back to a "Boost" option, it made remember the Guilty Gear gameplay where you could boost both on the ground and mid-air. It was fun and it can be done in a FPS as long as its a straight(forward?) motion.

I hope they stick to Halo's basics as stated by Slightly Live but a good novelty is welcome too.

Why did I come into this thread and read "QTE's"

Christ that's turrible.

No Halo 4 news is bringing us on the verge of crazyness, so we're doing a group therapy and exorcice our inner fears/demons.

I was thinking that it would be used more for dodging.

Chiefs don't dodge, they trample. I still want to feel like I'm the agressor and rather have an option to bring more pain and get out a firefight rather than be a ballerina on the battlefield.

I disagree totally. Strafing might not be as exciting but the freedom a greater movement speed gives you is far more exciting in terms of gameplay. Sure you cant dodge bullets but you can still sidestep/ jump over rockets. A greater movement speed allows you to be more dynamic in terms of how you play the game. A sudden boost like evade is pretty binary theres not much to it, you press a button and suddently your out of harms way. I just dont see where the excitement comes from considering how easy it is.

If I could only have one or the other I would choose just having a better base movement speed, and considering that stuff like Sprint and Evade pretty much requires nerfing the base movement speed to make them viable I know what I would prefer!

What does it have to do with the part of my post you quoted?

I always found the regular halo 3 box cover to be rather boring and a bit too simple, halo 1's is the best one not just for nostalgia but it's overall style.

Risk/reward with cooldown and recovery time?

That didnt really work with AA's though, make it a one use item which can be map controlled like equipment and I may be ok with it, but even then I just dont see how its fun. Its a get out of jail free card.

In older Halo I can escape by dropping down a level or going around a corner if they have me down to half shields before I land a shot. I can keep track of them whilst figuring out where they are likely to go and try and cut them off or just totally escape. In reach stuff like AA's killed that off, people just move in random directions at random times using whatever random AA they happen to be holding.

I know you are arguing for it to be a Campaign only thing, but I just dont think that would work. For sure you would still be affecting the game design in other areas when implimenting things like that. The campaign sandbox is always going to affect the multiplayer sandbox even indirectly. If it can be done then why not, I still dont think its a 'fun' addition but its an option for the people who like it. If its going to drag things down and be a resource hog then scratch it out and do something better.

Heh. I feel the opposite - Halo 1 is quite ugly and chunky, while Halo 3's is more evocative and reflective of its art style and use of color.

Halo 3 has that "yellow< >blue" boxart and I never liked it that much. But I absolutely adore the ODST boxart, which I am sure most of you guys find rather boring ;)

I don't know, but the ODST box art seemed to be more well received than the game itself in certain quarters! Probably my favourite next to the anniversary one, also the steel book for halo wars was really good.

People can't handle the concept of dual wielding AR starts this early.

Discussion on colors. I delved more into it at first but the post was too long so I posted the boxarts which all, I think, are reflective of the changes made to the game engine along the way.

This man is evil.

I'm pretty sure OuterWorldVoice has posted this on the Gaming Setup thread. Truly one Hell of a comfy couch where he probably enjoys a cigar or two with Sgt Johnson's ghost.

The cover doesnt mean anything. Halo: Reach has a really colorful cover but at the end the game isn't that colorful. I hope I understood Frankie right and that the cover isn't the final one. I don't really like it.

I know nothing about halo 4 and have limited knowledge on color spectrum so please be advised I'm mostly talking shit but I'll remember not to quote you seeing how litlle you like it.

Anyways, "really colorful"? really? then your eyes are probably popping out their sockets from the colors on Halo CE cover...
Reach has a late afternoon summer sun obscured by dark clouds and a covenant ship, mud, debris and its characters poses are more reflective of getting ready for an ambush than finishing the fight.
It's been said to death the cover ain't final. The final one will probably be more focused on the Chief's giant crotch suggestively aligned with the massive hole from the trailer.

Maybe Frankie will change Halo 4 ending so that it ends with the Chief removing his helmet and a close-up on his rosy (colors!) cheeks.

It is. Especially the strange mix of orange, yellow and blue-type colors. Just compare the Halo: Reach cover with ODST's or Halo 2's cover.

Edit.: You are talking about the mood that the cover delivers. I was just talking about the color pattern. Halo: Reach cover has a bigger range of colors than Halo 2 and Halo 3: ODST's ones. There are many colors on the cover. So it is colorful.

Edit: For understanding: Color pattern of the cover =/= overall artistic style of the game. mood of the cover = mood of the game

That fad was so Halo 3. It's all about dual wielding pro-pipes now.

Not to derail but "pipe" can mean blowjob in French, and I find a certain irony at your avatar...

Ok, we're friends.
I cannot play well in MP games where ennemies are mostly the same colors as allies, or worst somehow melt into the background (not talking stealth elites here).
So color me interested if 343i does use colors.
Still I wonder how far Sparth artworks are driving the game graphics and if knowing the entire trilogy won't be on XBOX360 alone has 343i already making aesthetical choices as to have a certain continuity in presentation when Halo moves to next-gen.

I always preferred the original Halo 3 boxart (before they replaced it with the "emotion" promo art)

I have that launch poster framed on my den wall.

I recall conflicting information on what that image was to be used for. It briefly showed up as cover art at retailer sites, then was quickly replaced with the final one. My understanding is it was promotional art that was mistakenly sent out as cover art. But I've also heard it was cover art that got a very poor reception and was swapped out.

I prefer the final, myself, but after disliking this one initially it grew on me a bit.

Can't wait to see the dual AR's as the franchise's new signiature weapons.

That alternate cover always made me feel like Chief was battling in a walk-in refrigerator.

Remember the problems people had with replacement disc in the collectors edition? I don't know about anywhere else, but people in the uk got a replacement disc with an alternative cover, whilst I can't find the actual cover itself, the picture was of master chief holding a turret (the exact one that can be seen on the left below). It was pretty cool.

Yeah, I remember it was used as the promotional art in some Samsung Campaign/Sweepstakes.

Wasn't that turret picture on the instruction manual? (Collector's Edition)

My favorite rendition as on the limited UK edition of "Halo Art of Building Worlds"

I love the Da Vinci take on MC. And Ashley Wood is awesome.

so good I bought it, even though it was more than twice the price of the regular edition.
A Sparth lytho did make the deal sweeter.

It's "key art" designed to generally rperesent the franchise. Retailers will often 9and are sort of encouraged to) use this as temp box art while they create their preorder campaigns and so on.

Often the key art evolves and changes throughout the campaign, often leading to a specific event (like the launch or the boxart etc). We are working on the Halo 4 key art now, which started obviously with the stuff from E3 last year. the direction we are heading is very interesting, and it's already looking very cool. Definitely Halo, 100%, but tonally a bit of a change.
