Yeah, it was alright.

I liked the guy who
perceived living beings as machines
best. All of the space ones, really. I could have done without the medieval furry romance, tho.

the last one was pretty epic
i want an amorphic blob girl :)

I just realized that cosmic has been misunderstanding all of jexhius' sarcastic posts.

Bah, don't want to edit the list now.

Yeah, I mean in 2011 we were greeted with manga adaptations like Usagi Drop, Chihayafuru, Wandering Son, Fate/Zero and other such shows. Clearly all polluting the medium and keeping us from experiencing the wonders of Ano Hana and Fractale.

Fate/Zero is a novel before it's a manga (though it's that too).

man cosmic has this shit down to a science. The monocle rankings are deeper than I thought.

So was there a consensus about how good Another was? Or bad? I missed it when people were watching it in the thread.

I think the general consensus was that not enough haappened to get people engaged into looking forward to the next episode.

or "I'll give it more episodes" for short.

Is Gosick really bad enough to be lumped with Fractale?

No, it's not. It's disappointing, but not Fractale bad and does have some good arcs.

I am a HUGE Last Exile fan. But I feel like without Claus & Lavie that I just will constantly wish they were there. It's probably not a very soon watch but I'm not discounting it.
If you loved Last Exile, you owe it to yourself to watch Fam, you really do... it's a worthy sequel with similar visuals, music, style, and action to the original show. Fam's a great lead character, and the story of the new series is decent. It's cliche, but solidly told. The cast is, of course, strong.

Oh, the lead characters are new, but some of the original cast are in the show, such as Dio, Tatiana, Alister, and Alvis. My only significant complaint is that it doesn't do a good enough job actually explaining the setting and backstory, or how precisely it connects to the first season. There's a spinoff manga (recently started, and just a few chapters in now) that tells the story of Claus, Lavie, etc. in between the two series that does do that, but it should have had more in the new TV anime. Oh well, that means it's somewhat like the original show, then. :) Oh, and the production values could be a bit higher, but given that the studio just almost went under, it's understandable that they don't have more money, I think, and I at least think it looks good enough.

Overall, it's definitely good. There's a lot of action -- if anything almost too much, it starts out high intensity and only occasionally lets up -- and the classic Last Exile-style world design you'd expect.

I only have one episode of Fractale left even though I hate it. Guh.
Well then the question becomes why in the world you kept watching it for so long...

I don't dislike Chihayafuru. I dislike the pettanko Chihaya. ;)
Ah.

I know that feel bro, this is what happens to me as I watch the show. It's made even worse because most of the new characters are all really boring or just outright irritating.
As far as I know, you're the only person on this forum watching the show who feels that way. I certainly disagree. Claus and Lavie were good characters, sure, but the new cast is just as good.

I do like that some of the original characters have appeared, it was nice to see them again, but I don't feel like it needed the same main character(s) too. The new ones are good too.

Gunbuster 6

dat last episode.
12,000 years later goddamn. Interesting choice to make it black and white mostly, it was sick when it switched to color at the end. My heart swelled at "Welcome Home." :P

Now you need to watch Diebuster! It has even more lesbians!

Noriko. </3 :(

You're too cool for words, man. It's also good to hear that spamming the thread actually works to get people to watch stuff!

SEE, REGULUS?! This guy got his sister to watch Utena!

I was able to get Jex and a number of other "monocle" people to watch K-ON. And look what happened, K-ON is now a "monocle" show. Therefore there should be a SuperS God tier and I should be it's sole occupant.

Now let me see if I can get people to watch THE IDOLM@STER as well. :3

Aquarion 6

I can't help but think this inspired Gurren Lagann in some ways. I mean it isn't as epic in presentation, but there was definitely some heaven piercing going on this episode. I mean come on, how awesome is
punching a mech right into the moon from Earth?
Really awesome!

Like a boss. This series went through a serious slump during its middle, and I mean serious-to-the-point-of-dropping-it-serious, but I persevered, and like a good soldier was rewarded. That ending made it all worth it. Mind games. Mind games. Mind games.

The world building was there, but that came at the expense of the characters, and when you're sitting on a character skeleton as awesome as the Prince aka dr. House, it's a real shame.

Just read a scoop on the Code Geass conference. Apparently Akito will be played by Miyu Irino, and Layla will be played by Maaya Sakamoto. There's a theatrical event planned in Summer 2012 where they will premiere it.

Diebuster 2

I'm glad Nono just starts out confident in herself and wants to work hard, nice change from TTGL and Gunbuster. She's a robot though....but not?

Does this mean it will start airing Summer/Fall? We won't have much longer to wait then I suppose.

Pretty sure, it's not a TV series. Details are still vague at the moment because I thin the press conference it still going on right now, but I think it's an OVA, with a theatrical event premier (like Gundam Unicorn).

There is an extra chapter that was never adapted fyi. The middle part was actually my favorite. You have to realize this was a 15 chapter series so there was never going to be much world building and in a gag manga its completely frivolous anyway.

Diebuster 1

Yeah, this is gonna be weird.

Just reading the name Diebuster gets the Op stuck in my head. Greatest op or GREATEST op?

Ok. I just got my copy of Ghost Slayers Ayashi and man, this show kinda sucks.

I like ghosts, these are not fucking ghosts, I've finished three disks and not a single ghost was present, what fucking gives? There are not ghost slayers either as again, no fucking ghosts!

So then anyway, why does this show suck so bad? There's soo many reasons. For one it has a guy who dresses up like a hot chick, why I dunno, but to balance that it has a hot young girl that dresses up like a dull man, why, well they told me but it was stupid so it just is. Then there's a normal looking vagrant type, a normal looking mountain guy and a normal looking retainer guy.

The art is good when hand drawn but terrible when CGI. I mean really bad. To say these monsters were uninspired looking things would be an understatement but to then take those uninspired monsters and render them using what could only be a N64 devkit or something, they look like fucking ass. It's so jarring.

It's also entirely negative. I thought people were emo in Evangelion but this is just kind of silly. Everyone hates Japan in this show. Everyone. The good guys, the bad guys, they'd all destroy Japan if they got the chance. Not that I care as Japan means little to me as an American but it's kinda weird how every single character's broken. We're not talking just the main cast but essentially anyone they talk to too! This is way worse than Eva was in the "wah, my life sucks woe is me" category.

The main character can pull shit from anything and turn its name into an item, usually a weapon but it can be anything. I love when he's fighting the Mexican Quetzalcoatl that a bunch of Japanese names scroll by. Right. I got it though, everyone's Japanese even those people who'd later be Mexicans and especially their ancient Gods.

And while I'm on the subject of Mexicans, or Aztecs or whatever one of the girls is, why does she look more or less Japanese too? They go out of their way to talk about how the girl has to disguise herself, people say she looks foreign but she doesn't. This isn't how visual mediums work people! If you want her to be bronze skinned you can't make her a pale white looking girl and refer to her as bronze skinned! It doesn't work! The viewer's not that stupid. What I can see is what I trust not what is said. Has a Hispanic person still not visited Japan yet? Did they just have no reference? It should be applauded that the anime series mentions Texas, Mexico, the Aztecs and Mayans, pretty progressive but then to get lazy and refer to her as looking foreign but make no effort to actually drawing what you describe and just placing her in weird clothes is stupid. Also, I get the feeling this idiot girl went and learned Japanese and colors her skin to blend in but has kept her weird foreigner clothes, how the fuck do they make a character that smart and that stupid at the same time?

But all the characters are stupid, their gripes against the world are mostly stupid, especially the young girl that dresses as a boy, whom they just love to point out that she's not 15 yet which I guess means they've got her pegged as a possible love interest for the main character because, well, this is anime and it wouldn't be weird enough unless they threw some 15 year olds towards the 30 year old. Ah well, maybe it's historically accurate though.

They also are supposed to work in secret yet somehow always botch the shit up and kill shit in front of large crowds. There's some faction posturing between different departments and Magistrates but it's so stupid I can't be bothered to care. the demons themselves are also pretty stupid but that's good as when your characters are stupid having them face cunning enemies would make it hard for them to prevail.

In short, I'm really fucking hating this show.

Ok. I just got my copy of Ghost Slayers Ayashi and man, this show kinda sucks.

Yes, it sucks. I dunno why you bought it. Lol.

I like ghosts, these are not fucking ghosts, I've finished three disks and not a single ghost was present, what fucking gives? There are not ghost slayers either as again, no fucking ghosts!

The English title is a fucking scam. The show isn't about ghosts. The Japanese title is Tenpo Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi, which generally implies instead that the show is about strange supernatural shit in the period era and the people who tackle them.

The character designs are pretty bland and boring too. Definitely a step down from the stuff Kawamoto previously worked on. Sadly it seems that his lazy effort on this show is more of an indication of his current standards, rather than a slight lapse in his career. :(

The art is good when hand drawn but terrible when CGI. I mean really bad. To say these monsters were uninspired looking things would be an understatement but to then take those uninspired monsters and render them using what could only be a N64 devkit or something, they look like fucking ass. It's so jarring.

There's also a lot of really lazy effects animation in the production. This was a show where the animators experimented a lot with using digital composite to replace traditionally animated effects. So instead of impressive looking animation for certain action sequences, they would use copy and paste, blur filters, crappy digital overlays, etc instead. Really a tragic effort, and one of the animators was so proud of it she had detailed educational posts about it on her blog too. :(

I have no real comment on this, because like any sane human being who was following the TV broadcast, I stopped watching after like 4 episodes or so. I did return to watch the final 2-3 episodes of the show, but it didn't really seem any better really. Lol.

The word-magic element of the show was supposed to be a big educational factor in the show's production and development. Apparently they were really excited because they felt they had a really compelling product to teach more kids about the root of Kanji words and so on. There was an hour long special the week before the series started, where they were detailing this amazing concept. Lolol.

And while I'm on the subject of Mexicans, or Aztecs or whatever one of the girls is, why does she look more or less Japanese too? They go out of their way to talk about how the girl has to disguise herself, people say she looks foreign but she doesn't. This isn't how visual mediums work people! There's probably more thought that went into that huge paragraph than the amount of thought that went into the production and marketing of the show you watched.

Why do you hate lolis?

They also are supposed to work in secret yet somehow always botch the shit up and kill shit in front of large crowds. There's some faction posturing between different departments and Magistrates but it's so stupid I can't be bothered to care. the demons themselves are also pretty stupid but that's good as when your characters are stupid having them face cunning enemies would make it hard for them to prevail.

Well, it's a stupid show, so it makes sense that almost everything about the show is stupid. In fact, that's a good thing because it makes the show more consistent. It's better that everything is stupid, rather than some parts being stupid and others not.

In short, I'm really fucking hating this show.

It's really quite bad. If I paid for it I would probably hate it too. It reruns endlessly on Animax Asia too, so technically I can watch it anytime I want, but it's so bad I can't sit through an episode without crying.

Getting anime for my friend who is a coworker is hard.

It seems that the guy likes shows that have a higher ratio of action vs. talking. Also it usually has to have some supernatural element to it (which includes Fantasy titles) or be war centered.

I tried to get him to watch Squid Girl, and he turned it off in the first five minutes.

Poor Ika

Any shounen series should suffice here. I'll let cosmic handle the specific show suggestions.

TTGL? Fair amount of talking I guess but mostly in the midst of crazy action.

So. The Akito news, now with a linkable source. Everything duckroll said plus an extra detail:
The anime studio Sunrise is announcing on Thursday that the Code Geass Gaiden: Bōkoku no Akito project will screen in 10 theaters throughout Japan in early summer. Miyu Irino will play Akito, while Maaya Sakamoto will play Reira Marukaru. Sunrise also announced a stage musical inspired by the original anime, in addition to the previously announced non-musical stage play (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: Sōran Eve). A social game is launching on Japan's mobile game platform Mobage.
Can you imagine how fabulous a Geass musical will be....

So. The Akito news, now with a definite source. Everything duckroll said plus an extra detail:

That's right, theater performances for both normal Geass and Akito. Wonder which will be more popular...

Erm, I don't think that's what you think it says. All the stage plays are for Geass. I also think it's funny that you think ANN is somehow a more "definite source" than me. :P

Yes, it's terrible. I bought it because it was like 15 bucks and had ghosts in the title and didn't look like it had too many kids but there's still kids! And despite all the adult shit going on like murders, whores and shit everyone acts like kids anyways! I think this is the worst title I own right now.

Whoops, misinterpreted "original anime" as referring to Akito, since it is an original project, and not just "original series". Blame my lack of sleep.
By definite source I just mean a providable link. Anyway, this is more the real source but not everyone can read Japanese.

We still have to finish it. He was at the part right before
they go into space.

Right now I'm having him watch Sengoku Basara which I'm also seeing for the first time and Darker than Black.

One time he commented on his best friend who he grew up with has seen more anime than me, and I didn't know whether to take it as an insult or in someway a compliment. I seriously doubt his friend has seen more than me, and he has a distinct bias in this case.

Yeah, that's what actually threw me for a loop. With the little amount of time it had, it made sure you knew the interstellar relations more than you knew the cast. Reading that it was a gag manga with only a few chapters, I never expected the direction it had. Fun series, regardless.

I saw The Lion King musical in Las Vegas. It was extremely fabulous. Which reminds me, I bought The Lion King on Blu-ray during one of the Black Friday sales and I still need to get around to watching it.

Anyways, the problem is of course that the original film The Lion King was already a musical, they just ported all the songs over from the movie to the stage. To make a Geass musical, they have to compose a bunch of songs for Lelouch & Co. to sing. I wonder if Lelouch and Suzaku will sing about their unrequited love for each other...
