Real Pic January!

I'm back! And my goodness am I exhausted. Too much walking around today.

So real pic thread (especially the new people who haven't said anything yet), what's your darkest gaming guilty pleasure?

You know, games that you enjoy, but you're really kind of ashamed to? I have a couple:

- Dead or Alive. I enjoy it as an actual fighting game. Across DOA4 and Dimensions, I've put like 100 hours in to the game. My ex-girlfriend and I still play DOA4 a few times a week on Live!

- Final Fantasy XIII. My expectations for the game were so rock-bottom that as long as it ran, I would have been fine with it. But I ended up really liking the graphics and music and even the battle system.

Man, I was just thinking about starting this topic up today when I was wandering around Best Buy.

For the most part I'm not really ashamed of any game series that I play. I will happily admit to loving Kingdom Hearts. Fuck the haters.

However, there is one series that I hide in the back corners of my collection... and that is...

My Sims.

It's cheesy as HELL but good god is it adorable fun.

I love KH.

Horrible secret time: I name all my electronics in themes. Once it was Gundam themes, so my laptop was called ZAKU-II, my router was called White Base, and my iPod was called Guntank.

Now I have things on a Kingdom Hearts theme, so my desktop is named Sora, my USB drive is named Aqua, and my iPhone is named Ventus.

I am the biggest nerd.

I can literally thing of nothing on that front since I generally don't care what others think of games I play.

I love KH.

I do that! I name my HDDs after Gundams and I named my guitar Skeith.

How about this new question super happy fun time:

What are your favorite authors?

I am sitting here reading A Little Larger Than the Entire Universe by Fernando Pessoa, and wondering how the hell he is not mentioned, ever. His writing is so good -- so good! Everything I've read from him has been sublime.

The Book of Disquiet has been my favorite book for years (since I read it as a junior in high school). It is excellent, like the distillation of what it is to live in word form.

I can't think of any other writer I enjoy reading more.

I like most of Gaiman's stuff but my favorite author of all time is F. Scott Fitzgerald.

It sounds like a cliche, but Great Gatsby changed my life.

I don't go all out with things, but my computer is named Hermes and my iPod is named Orpheus.

Previously my USB stick (which was red) was named Rubedo and my Wii (which I still have of course) was named Albedo. Named after the concepts in alchemy and not from Xenosaga (but might as well think of them as that too.)

Of course I love Gaiman's stuff (mentioned Sandman earlier in fact) but I also love The Great Gatsby. I've notice it gets a lot of hate recently and I don't know why. I guess people can't relate.

I also like Jane Austen, Diana Wynne Jones, Patricia Mckillip... and many others which I'll think of later.

I've never finished The Great Gatsby. I remember the last time I tried, it was very difficult to get through. I would put it right behind The Republic as a Book That is Hard to Read.

I don't know why. I haven't read much F. Scott Fitzgerald, it could be that his style simply doesn't resonate with me.

I have read some Gaiman, but not enough to make a call.

My second pick is probably Joyce. Always thought he was ahead of his time.

How about this new question super happy fun time:

What are your favorite authors?

John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, George R.R. Martin, Williams Faulkner, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Victor Hugo, James Joyce (but not Finnegan's Wake).

And while I wouldn't call him one of my favorites, I've never read anyone who equaled Gene Wolfe's mastery of prose.

Horrible secret time: I name all my electronics in themes.

i name my electronics after books. main computer is snowcrash, then i have other computers/devices named quicksilver, interface, zodiac, blackburn, primer, neuromancer, etc.

What are your favorite authors?

i have a deep love for Stephenson, Gibson, Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Christopher Moore, Bradley Denton, Douglas Adams, Chuck Palahniuk.

My favorite authors are:

Emile Zola,
Guy de Maupassant,
Jose Saramago,
Jonathan Ames,
Philip Roth, and
Dave Eggers

Zola and Maupassant are basically the best people ever.

I love reading Edgar Allen Poe and Lewis Carroll. Both my favorite authors and poets.

My mom read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking glass to me as a kid and they are still my favorite books. Poe on the other hand, I discovered in the second grade and he started my lifelong love affair with horror and macabre.

I think Jonathan Safran Foer and Chuck Palahniuk are modern descendants of Carroll. They approach a similar kind of descent into fantasy and story deconstruction, but of course both implement it in different ways. As much as I like Carroll (and I do!) I would say that modern equivalents do a better job of telling stories and creating meaning. But I guess that was never really Carroll's intention.

I can't think of many equivalents to Poe. You've got your Lovecraft and the Cthulu mythos out of that, but nowadays? Joyce Carol Oates? I don't know. Seems to me horror writing has changed, become more poppy, maybe moved too much into torture porn cinema's territory.

From my late teens to late 20's, it was R.A. Salvatore (the Forgotten Realms books). I didn't dig the direction he took his characters, and age has changed my tastes, so he's since been replaced by David McCullough. I'll always have a soft spot for Salvatore, and getting to meet him in person a few times has been a highlight of my life as a fan.

I love KH.

The drives on my previous computer build were named for the moons of Jupiter (Io, Europa, etc.). They're all now vault numbers from Fallout 3. Somehow, it makes it feel more cool/less nerdy.

Obligatory:

Ken Kesey, Dumas, Arthur C. Clarke, H.G. Wells, Palahniuk, and indeed Douglas Adams, Victor Hugo, Steinbeck and Lewis Carroll.

There's been a hashtag floating around twitter today for people to post their favorite song lyrics.

I'm kind of curious myself, RP thread. What song lyric do you really love?

Cheesy as hell, but I always loved the chorus of Province by TV on the Radio:

Hold your heart courageously
as we walk into this dark place
Stand, steadfast erect and see
that love is the province of the brave
