Halo 4 Announced (MS Conf, 2012, Start Of New Trilogy)

I could have sworn a Holiday 2003 release date was initially announced. My googling only brings up results for Halo 2 Vista being delayed due to nudity... wat

This is barely worth posting, but since some of you all (including myself) will take absolutely anything Halo 4 related, here is a short entry by Josh Holmes about 343's progress on Halo 4:

Jessica has asked me to contribute to a Halo 4 developer diary as a recurring part of our weekly Bulletin. While we won’t be able to share secrets that would spoil any of the Carefully Planned Reveals™ that we have coming down the pipe, we will give you our impressions of some of the work that is going on behind the scenes here at 343. We’ll also provide our thoughts on anything that we do make public as part of the lead-up to the game’s launch. I realize that isn’t a lot at this stage, and trust me, this is hard for us, too. We are working on so many things that we can’t wait to share with you, but patience is in order. Good things come to those who wait. All will be revealed in due time. And assorted other clichés.…

Right now the team across 343 is shaking off the last remnants of our turkey-induced stupor and whipping ourselves into fighting shape for the year ahead. It’s going to be a huge one. This will be the culmination of a multi-year journey that has already filled several cylindrical space-canisters with delicious blood, sweat and tears. Now we’re entering the crucial final stretch in which we will ready our baby for release into the wild. It’s an exciting time but stressful, too, as we place pressure on ourselves to live up to your expectations. The good news is that the game is already looking great and fun to play. So, as we ready ourselves to give you your first real look at Halo 4 in the months ahead, we can only hope that you, too, will like what you see.

I really hope they're not waiting until E3 to say anything about the game. We saw how successful Halo CE: Anniversary was with a similar publicity strategy...

Halo CEA was never meant to match the sales of Reach or any other mainline title. IIRC, from what Frankie has posted here CEA met (and surpassed) their initial sales target.

And there's no way 343 is waiting until E3 to give us more details on Halo 4.

I thought they did an excellent job promoting CEA, especially considering the short turnaround time and smaller scope of that project. I'm confident the Halo 4 marketing will blow it out of the water.

No worries.

Since HaloGAF is in this thread, is there a place I can go to see a culmination of minute details released so far about Halo 4?

And additionally a place that provides a good summary of the recent books? (as I don't plan on reading them, but I do love to keep in touch with Halo lore as much as I can). I know there's a thread in OT but that's more discussion of impressions more than anything and I feel a summary from a Halo head's perspective would be better.

If it'll be worthy, it'll be a new thread. Believe.
I certainly hope so, I fear missing something due to it getting lost in a megathread.

Yes please guys. You follow this more closely than I can. If there is any real bit of news, somebody please make a thread. I cannot keep this bs anymore of scanning the regular threads just to find nothing.

It's better this way which is similar to how Halo 2 was handled. Halo 3 was shown too much.

Perhaps. As long as 343i doesn't overpromise and under deliver, they are ok with showing some of the tech to me, nothing relevant to the plot though. I just don't want them to pull a Bungie and release "in engine" cinematics that end up being much better looking than the real game.

anyone else hope that halo4 is a radical departure from previous halo games but sadly know that its fate will most likely be another formulaic halo game?

Formulaic? As far as the fans are concerned, each Halo game has a different formula. Halo 4 is supposed to be a throwback to the formula of the original; It's supposed to give you that sense of exploration again. Halo 2 was too much of a canned theme ride, Halo 3 felt a bit more like Halo 1 and Halo Reach was just "somber".

I wish Halo 4 was a lot like ODST though. If there was a hub world, I would go crazy.

I hope 343 doesn't make the trilogy too dark and serious. One thing I loved about Halo 1-3 (which Reach pretty much abandoned) was that quirky, sci-fi opera feel to the characters and dialogue.

I think the only departure I really want out of Halo is to take a more open world approach to the campaign, an expansion of the concept of ODST's hub. Though I'm fine with just more Halo, except with different enemies and environments and such.

what i really want from halo 4: flashback missions that give us more backstory of john (his kidnapping, training on reach, how he got his armor, some missions with linda and the others).
what i dont want: an (implied) love story between john and cortana.

Would to play that one mission actually if im not mistaken their first mission in the novel Fall of reach. where john has to take out a rebel leader if im not mistaken a bit cod in my halo :p

sure, why not. these missions could mix up the gameplay (different settings, new/different enemies, other abilities/weapons) and story, while giving more (and much needed) backstory to john.

Master Chief's children and early years make for good reading but a potentially shitty game. So when during Master Chief's race to save the universe and fight off ancient evils does he get a chance to reminisce about the good old days?

There's no way they could tie any of that into Halo 4 in any meaningful way. Just go read the book instead.

when he is in cryo. the flashbacks could act as a pretty awesome tutorial before cortana wakes him up. and if they plan to focus the story on john, they should explain his background to the layers that didnt read the books (which should be quite a lot).

Yep, I would really like to see this.

Don't think I need any dialogue wheels in Halo.

Do you remember his first mission? All the sneaking around and... not suitable for a game lack of fun described? And cryo-dreams? Really? Urgh. Just no.

he was on a ton of interesting missions, they dont need to pick the shitty ones.
and whats wrong with sneaking? never played Truth and Reconciliation?

Agreed. A unknown world that is definitely going to be vast, mysterious, and full of varying environments needs to be openly explored rather than given to us as pieces from a structured mission.

Yup, yup and yup. This is exactly what I am hoping for from Halo 4.
