So we had my dog put down this morning. :(

Very sad, but having had time to get used to the idea makes it a bit easier.

Think I'll watch a movie tonight. I'm thinking Youth of the Beast - short, and the description makes it sound like a lot of fun.

Hang in there, Snowman.

Heads up to NYC GAF...

Tonight there will be a double feature of FREAKED and DEATH WISH 3, with an Alex Winter Q&A, at 92YTribeca.

Please go and ask about BILL AND TED 3.

Absolutely brilliant. I love black comedies, and this was truly something else. The casting was excellent. When Mozart first appeared on screen I said to myself "what a bad choice", but after 5 minutes I ate my words. I watched this with a friend who has zero interest in classical music, and he was glues to the screen all the way. We were shocked to learn that we had just watched a 3 hour movie. It truly went by fast.

I don't rate movies, but this is easily 10/10 for me. Highly recommended.

Complete line-up for another program ('Bright Future') at the Film Festival of Rotterdam.

Once again I don't recognize any of the titles (except for 3 right near the end). Once again I have no idea if there is anything worth watching. Once again, I turn to GAF. Anything there that pops out?

edit: Amadeus is indeed amazing. I have it coming up for a rewatch in the near future. <3

Well after a huge drought of nothing here in Australia, I'm having a goddamn marathon of awesome at the cinemas.

In the past few days I saw

HUGO - Which has quickly shot to the top of my list as my favourite of 2011.

TGWTDT - Absolutely loved it. Easily makes the top 5.

Today I'm finally seeing Melancholia. In a couple of days I'll be seeing The Descendents. On Thursday Tinker Tailor and Young Adult release.

Didn't like it. Godard rubs his dick for over an hour and doesn't even have a decent pay off.

saddest truths about film lovers. and a perfect summation of the new wave and ye ye.

watched:

young torless **** masterful film - i don't think hits the highs of his tin drum - but its a beautiful and harsh film. so much better than the banal white ribbon.

tinker tailor solider spy ** a fine movie that doesn't do serve to the source. there's some fine performances, but the gutting of all the relationships and characterzations is unforgivable. it doesn't come within a mile of the bbc mini either.

Glad you watched one of my recommendations and liked it. The Tin Drum is also one of my favourite films. Have you seen any other films from Schlöndorff? I still have Coup de grâce and The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum on my to watch list.

50/50 - Was a bit let down honestly because peeps said it was so good and cried (I didnt't even tear up).

But it was still pretty great nonetheless. JGL was great as always and I found Seth Rogen pretty much as funny as in Pineapple Express (which is my favourite role of his) but with subtle bro emotion too.

Now I feel like watching Up in the Air again and seeing The Wackness.

I was watching The Tree Of Life then paused it and had to post in here.

What the fuck am I watching? I feel like I did when I first watched 2001. Bored. Clueless. I feel like I am missing the point with all these nature/space shots. I assume its supposed to be artistic or something, but just like in 2001, I am bored out of my mind.

Someone clue me in please.

fight me.

When I watched it I felt the start dragged on a bit too. But the last half of it is so amazing and endearing it more than made up for it. Though I've also say that the family stuff is also aimless, which kind of blows my mind. Keep at it.

Lol I WANT to like it I swear! But this beginning and voiceover is just going on and on.

I will trek on then. Only now while browsing GAF until it gets to the good parts.

The movie makes more sense if you finish it, or at least get to the meat which is the middle 90 minutes.

Does that go for 2001 as well? Stopped about halfway, maybe sooner, and never wanted to finish it. IIRC, nobody talked in that movie for like an hour, and the first 30 minutes were of some animals fighting.

Holy shit what did I watch? Can I have 2 hours of my life back please? I guess I am just not fancy enough to "get" this movie. Damn that was boring.

I don't see how anyone can find the family stuff and the conflict between the father and the sons boring. Very tense and heartwarming when resolved. to each his own I guess.

i also did not really go ga-ga over TREE OF LIFE. not my thing. ponderous and unfocused.

now THIS is a movie!

the special effects in this movie are just unnaturally good for a low-budget flick.

I cant really explain it. There wasn't enough in the story to make me care about the family. I also really didn't like the direction. I can see why people like movie critics would, but to me and I would bet the average viewer, it comes across as way too "artsy" and kind of just boring. Not saying the movie is bad overall, just not for me.

AOTB is almost at the top of my list!

OP is awesome. Great work.

Just caught Sleepwalkers (1992) on cable, for no other reason than because my favorite part of Twin Peaks (Mädchen Amick) was in it. I never read the Stephen King book it was based on, but I'm tempted to now just to get the bad taste of the movie out of my mouth. Terrible special effects (even for '92), bad acting, and an incredibly weak script all combine to make this a thoroughly unpleasant watch. Not even my fair Mädchen could save this wreck. We are given hints of an interesting movie when we notice that cats can sense the sleepwalkers, and are shown glimpses of the sleewalkers' supernatural physical abilities. Unfortunately these fleeting tidbits are coupled with no information on the sleepwalkers, no greater story than "They move from town to town to feed on people", and only two sleepwalkers for the entire movie. Which wouldn't be a problem if there were interesting characters for them to interact with or something else going on besides waiting to see how the main (read: only) plot unfolds. The town is just completely devoid of interesting people (save the Sheriff), and nothing even happens to them. I have to imagine the book had some hook or element in the story that made it interesting, but it seems to have been completely excised in the transition to the screen. The lame attempts at humor fall flat, King's cameo is bad even for him, and ultimately it ends up as a C-Movie at best. Shame, because Mädchen was as lovely as ever.

*swoooooooon*

There is no book.

What is particularly frustrating abut this film at that there are elements and scenes that work. Could have been an interesting take on vampires with just a few fixes, imo.

Ha, yeah I found that out sometime later. I saw the "Stephen King's Sleepwalkers" and just assumed it was an adaptation. Totally agree though, it just kind of languished between being a serious horror movie and a goofy campfest, and in the end had no real identity and didn't work as either.

Based on your posts about The Tree of Life, I can only assume you will not enjoy the rest of 2001. Both films are light on dialogue and plot.

yea i've seen grand prix a few times, and it's wonderful - also his streak of the train/seconds/grand prix/the fixer all in a row is really amazing. deathmaker looks pretty good, but i'm trying to watch one from everyone's list then i'll finish them up.

i've seen the lost honor which is great and handmaiden's tale which is alright i guess. cope de grace seems interesting, but i haven't seen it yet.

But this would suggest that I had an idea of what I wanted from this film. I don't really do that with Godard because you never know.

yea but you know like why you watch films and why his craft doesn't appeal to you like the characters watching bergman.

I like Tree of Life the best last year but I've seen Attack the Block a lot more. I think I've watched it like 4 times now...wow. Still awesome.

what's weirder than people multitasking during watching movies are the people on ICM who watch movies at 1.5 speed so they go by quicker.

god i don't get that either. a friend of mine did that with The Office. Seems like that would throw off all the awkward pauses and make them pointless.

:( sorry, I guess slower movies like that just aren't for me. I really wanted to like it lol. Guess I shouldn't say my thoughts of Blade Runner on here :D

I just got back from Melancholia which was fantastic. I need to let it sit for a while, as this could be one of those rare times where - although I was transfixed the entire time, my inability to enjoy what I was watching might outweigh my admiration for what I was watching. It was very satisfying, yet obviously wholly depressing in a way that left me feeling very numb afterward.

On second thought. Watching Tree of Life might be the perfect plug to fill the hole that Von Trier just carved in my soul.

That's right Snowy, I might be forgoing my earlier idea of watching a Spielberg classic for a Malick film. I can only blame Von Trier for this shit.

Melancholia: I honestly don't know why the first half existed. And even if I were to accept that it was there to set the scene and introduce the characters (some that never reappear), I can't understand why it went for an hour.

While it usually doesn't bother me, I felt the shakey cam was too much in this. Second half was immediately more gripping, had it been fleshed out with a few different settings (to get away from the kid, the sister/brother in law and Dunst), I think it could've been the entire film on its own.

Hugo: Disappointed me :( I was probably expecting too much but it didn't seem to do anything too fantastic with 3D. I enjoyed it, the kids are broth great actors, Cohen got quite a few laughs out of me, but I was still left feeling a little unsatisfied. I'm beginning to think 3D doesn't really have much to add to the films that aren't balls to the wall action (i.e.: Avatar).

The first half is there to give meaning to the way Justine acts in the second part of the film.

Hugo - why was everyone British.

The opening scene blew me away and the use of the 3D throughout the rest of the film was better than the usual but still didn't wow me much.

Sacha Baron Cohen was hilarious. The child actors were alright although some of their lines were shit. I'll admit I was lot less cynical about shit like that because I got caught up in the "magic" of it.

When I first heard Scorsese was making a family film I was gobsmacked but the dude delivers. The cinema subtext was extremely enjoyable.

Lots of fun all round.
