Meaning that if you're poor and sick in our state and don't have kids, you don't get any help with health care. I have to pay for his meds right now.

The thing about private vs public insurance is that efficiency can only be improved on the administrative overhead.
The number of claims is going to be exactly the same either way. When it comes to unemployment insurance, there will be the same number of jobless claims whether the government or a private company runs the program.
The only reason we'd want to privatize unemployment insurance would be if the government were currently spending far too much on the administrative costs of running the program. I'm not aware that this is the case.
