what the holy mother saint trinity of fuck that beard

A couple of quick shops:

I don't really like how Tails came out in this one, but Sonic actually looks pretty nice.

Well, thanks, with that beard and the logo I was going to vomit.
Thats much better.

it's like Sonic's trying to signal to the player "get out while you still can". what an awkward smile and thumbs up.

So Sega are pretty much forgetting Episode 1 existed?

Or would they have the balls to re-release it and give it for free to those who already bought it?

Wouldn't the Episode 2 imply they weren't? I do admit a complete overhaul suggests otherwise.

Also no offence but that black-pupil shop of the logo makes it look like they're both tripping balls.

Re-releasing Episode I would be like accidentally inputting the launch codes for a second nuke.

That would be the smart thing to do imo. It would save them some credibility with this series and my faith in Dimps lol.

They just released a brand new version of Episode 1 for iPads about a month ago (basically a port of the iPhone release, but using the higher quality assets from the console version) and it's also in the Steam registry, implying a PC release is imminent.

So, no. They aren't forgetting Episode 1 ever existed.

Episode 2 has been rated by the ESRB and also lists PC (not like the PC listing will surprise anyone)

http://www.tssznews.com/2012/01/16/esrb-rates-s4e2-includes-pc-classification/

I suppose this means the game is coming out real soon. I don't think games are usually rated by the ESRB until they get close to release, right?

Gravity Rush for the Vita got rated more than a month ago and unless I'm wrong hasn't even been released in Japan yet. There really isn't any kind of pattern to ESRB timing.

That would make sense so unfortunately this can't happen from Sega

It would also cost a lot more to make AND would increase the filesize a significant amount. Going by what we know about Sonic Unleashed/Sonic Generations, a single zone's assets run about 500-600mb.

Even at four zones like Episode 1, that puts it at or over XBLA's 2gb limit.

Then consider the amount of work that goes in to something like that; making a level out of polygonal geometry like that, even if it's side scrolling, takes significantly more work to build, in addition to requiring more optimization.

While not impossible, for the scope of this kind of game, it just eats up more time and money that would be better spent elsewhere. Basically, think of it like this: if they had done Episode 1 to look the way Sonic Generations does, Episode 1 would've been an even worse game than what we ended up with.

Agreed.

And assuming what Ken meant by new visual engine... I hope this means they're changing the art direction. Episode I's visuals were horribly bland and ugly... not to mention lazy.

^Pretty much this. I kinda wished that they took the route that Capcom did with Megaman 9 and 10 and kept the graphics and sound old school to keep the retro feel.

Hope that the new graphics are at least a little more appealing then that plastic looking pre-rendered crap.

This is what I wanted out of Episode 1. :/

I dislike how plasticky, shiny and perfect everything looks in Episode 1. The art direction just bugs me. Hopefully Episode 2 looks different, but they may want to maintain aesthetic consistency from Episode 1 to Episode 2.

Knowing that there's probably no hope for an epic Episode 1 + 2 + 3 lock-on option (due to gameplay changes in Ep 2), might as well change everything that needs to be changed. Leave nothing alone. Make each episode the best standalone experience it can be without regard for other episodes.

They fucked up so goddamn bad. Should have made the entire saga separate 16 bit games that could eventually be locked on to form an amazing, long journey.

Remember this?

(Speaking of which, wow, Play Sega is STILL down after that security snafu? Wasn't that like, almost a year ago?)

And give people the chance to tear its public reputation to pieces months before launch the way they did with Episode 1? No sir, can't have that happening again.

It'll probably happen regardless :P.

In the long run it's probably better for them to keep things under wraps and not post any early version of the full game so "developers" can play it and bash the crap out of it.

I can't wrap my mind around how horrible episode 1 was ...even Sonic Advance series seemed to do more in terms of variety and new ideas.

Also stop with the green hill motif's and throwbacks...

Episode 1 confirmed for PC.. episode 2, too!

I still can't believe they're releasing this.

I mean, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode One was execrable. Its music, visuals and level design were appalling when contrasted with Sonic 1-2-CD-3-K. The physics were actually worse than the 8-bit Sonic games, proving that the idiots at Sonic Team couldn't even get consistency managed on the Game Gear, with its one-thousandth-of-the-360 processing power.

It boggles the mind.

I wonder if they ported Episode 1 to their Episode 2 engine. Sure took a long while.

The recent iPad version had a different-looking Sonic in it, too.

People keep buying them. Vox populi vox dei et al.

P.S. I can't believe you people are still doing the eyes thing.

What do you mean, "you people"?

Worn out memes aside, while I generally didn't give a crap about Sonic's eye color (or whether he's called "Eggman" or "Robotnik"), the position and shape of his mouth really is pretty dopey looking.

It's like he just took a big drink of water and is trying not to laugh

The best part is that they're saying, "We're fixing things!" and the first thing they do is show off a logo copy-pasting Sonic without fixing his odd face. Not off to a great start.

Why is Sega so opposed to using the original Sonic design? It looks so much better. This 1999 Sonic design just looks forced. Can't stand it.

While all of this is true, it sold well across all the platforms so they feel obligated to make Episode 2.

I can't agree that the physics are worse than the 8-bit versions. Those games had very flimsy physics and awful framerates that ruined anything those games could have offered. Sonic 4 was certainly better than those titles.

It's nowhere near as good as the 16-bit titles, though.
