Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Here's one: If you've played every Pokemon iteration since its conception and still find it to be a stimulating experience, you are probably an autist.

I know this thread is about "controversial opinions" and such, but how is such blalant attack on people allowed?

Could a mod please answer me this?

I think Kane and Lynch 2 is the most stylish game ever made. Yes, even over DMC, Jet Set, etc. It captures dirt and sleaze so fucking well.
Yes! K&L2's dirty-digital look is incredible. The nude assault on a fast food restaurant... there are no words.

Rainbow Sex Vegas 2 was head and shoulders above most shooters of this generation, even if it didn't do its predecessors justice.
YES! I'd pay hard monies just for more split-screen terrorist hunt maps.

Far Cry 2
Apart from the horrible matchmaking this was a very good game that was misunderstood / misplayed by people expecting to be able to play this game like a Call of Duty game:
A True Gamer With Great Taste™.

I've been gaming for nearly 20 years and I think the Wii has the best library of any console. Like, ever. Even ignoring first party games I think the library's pretty great, to the point where this has been the first gen where I've been a one console owner. I'm a sick pup

Survival Horror is a subgenre of Action-Adventure

Now take an Action-Adventure game (like Red Dead Redemption) and add the layer of Survival Horror... Specifically, horrific enemies/situations and de-emphasized combat (those are the common markers of that subgenre). It works out, they aren't separate genres. Survival Horror is simply a method of refinement to the Action-Adventure game.

Horror is an aesthetic and cannot be applied to a game's genre. Games are not movies. De-emphasized combat? Resident Evil was about mastery over both controls and combat. It was about making you think of the environment and combat in a different way due to the controls (which came about because it was designed around a DPAD). The older RE games were actually fairly mechanically solid (unlike a lot of RE clones after it like Silent Hill) and was designed to be mastered like most Capcom games. It took Alone in the Dark, unjankified it, and made it a (much) better game by actually putting an emphasis and thought on the combat.

Trying to actually explain what survival horror is without using aesthetics basically boils down to "inventory/resource management". Which is something that is not tied to the genre in anyway whatsoever. The sub-genre is too specific. It is like saying Deus Ex's genre is a Cyberpunk (which is an aesthetic, not a gameplay term) FPS because you augment yourself and hack terminals.

What I love about these "ALL POKEMON FANS ARE AUTISTIC HYUCK HYUCK" statements is that they're uttered by the same guys who still find games like Mario enjoyable. And those who aren't encapsulated by such experiences can only be in the "mature games for mature gamers such as myself" crowd.

So either way you look at it, it's either laughably hypocritical or one the most ignorant and absurd opinions in this entire thread - controversial or not.

I like you.

Thanks! At the risk of making you hate me, though, I have some more random ones:

- Super Mario RPG was a waste of the Mario license, and a middling RPG at best
- Super Mario Sunshine is awesome, better than Galaxy YEAH I SAID IT
- Super Mario Bros. 2 is janky and lame
- Wind Waker is the best Zelda game, followed by Link's Awakening
- Skyward Sword is the worst 3D Zelda, no question
- Portal 2 is an abomination, and a mockery of everything that made the first one awesome
- Sonic & Knuckles was the best of the first 4 Sonics
- Smash Bros. Brawl gets a bad rap, there's nothing really that bad about it

sdkjvsvkjdvksjv I've found my long-lost twin. FUCK.

Something else controversial - I've owned Shadow of the Colossus for years, but I've strangely never even opened the box.

Here we go:

- I think Rumble Roses (original, not sequel) has a good wrestling mechanic
- DX:HR > Deus Ex 1
- GTA: IV is booooooring
- Fallout 3 (w/ DLC) is the best Fallout in the series
- RE 3 > RE 2

Oh, hey! That reminds me of one I forgot.

- I love ICO but Shadow of the Colossus is a BORDERLINE UNPLAYABLE MESS

Seriously, I played and liked it when it came out back in the day, but I tried to fire it up recently (after playing through ICO again) and couldn't even bring myself to finish the third Colossus. Playing that game is WORK, plain and simple. The camera and controls are BUSTED. Great art doesn't excuse bad gameplay.

- Chrono Cross is better than Chrono Trigger
- Final Fantasy VI is the worst of the first 6 games
- Bioshock is pretentious nonsense
- Final Fantasy XII is easily the best game of the series

and

- Deadly Premonition is the best game of this console generation

:)

The bolds are right on brother son of the bitch give me 5 up in the mother trucking whore house bitch!

Your un-bolded statements make me want to throw hot grease on you. FF6 the worst out of the first 6?! I would give 1 or 2 that honor but 6, come one now breh!

^ I could believe that.

Lmao he called me an autist because I've been buying the same shit for the past 16 years and find nothing wrong with it what a jerk.

Forum rights for pokemon fans.

e-vvv Stop taking it so seriously? I guarantee you it will do you wonders and you might laugh every now and then.

This is supposed to be a controversial gaming opinions thread.

Nothing seemed to be aimed at one person, just generalizations. If it hurts, you probably shouldn't be in this thread.

Not sure that gives good grounding for posts like calling fans of pokemon pedophiles, at what point is the line crossed in this thread then when it comes to flinging insults?
Having a controversial opinion about a game is pretty far removed from stuff like that.

Bullshit. In this thread I have been called a paedophile and an autist (this is ignoring the fact that using that as an insult is some really pathetic shit) simply for liking a popular video game series.

If you feel that liking a Nintendo game is grounds to call someone a paedophile, then the best of luck to you.

I don't think this one is too controversial. I personally feel that Sonic 3 & Knuckles (even though you said S&K standalone) is the best of ALL Sonics.

I like BethFallouts better than Interplay Fallouts. While the Bethesda games don't feel the same, atmospherically and story wise, I actually prefer them to the Interplay games which I felt had a lot of personality, but bland stories and worlds.

Same. Fallout 1&2 were great games, but they don't hold a candle to Fallout 3 as far as fun-factor goes.

And Fallout 3 doesn't hold a candle to New Vegas, so Obsidian for the win, I guess.

I replay S3&K nearly every year

Tried Sonic CD for the first time this month when it came on XBLA and didn't really like it.

Yeah, that's true for us, but I feel like Sonic 2 is pretty much considered the best/most classic/best liked. I could be wrong, that's just the sense I've always gotten.

I bet if 3 and Knuckles had been one epic game like they had intended, things might be different, but it kind of has some stigma attached to it because of the lock-on thing.

I thought it had positive stigma because of the lock-on though? It enabled cool extras like Hyper Sonic, Super Tails and Hyper Knuckles (argubly could of have still existed, but it seems like the Super Emeralds only existed because Sega had to make S&K special stages). Not to mention Knuckles in Sonic 2 and No Way! game.

Most played, perhaps, but anyone who ever played S&K easily list it as the superior title. Probably. >_>

Alright, I actually have one that I legitimately think that I'm pretty on my own with.

I'd say that I really hate quick save / quick load and what it has done to good game design. Don't get me wrong, I want to be able to stop and leave off at any time (with a destructible quick save) but the ability to just continually save and replay at a specific point at a combat encounter is game breaking. Now folks just say "Well then don't use it. Rely on checkpoints." but even if you do that some of these games just seem designed around the player using it (STALKER comes to mind for me). I just feel like much better games are made when either designing a game in which you are expected to die and are not allow to just save and restore like your own little Sands of Time (Dark Souls) or in which death is handled in a way that rewards you and allows you to keep playing the game or learn more interesting things (Planescape Torment).

Every Zelda has quite a few differences, and each one is enjoyable on their own. The "tired" Zelda formula that most people whine about it is in only 5 games so far.

The only 2 really similar are Twilight Princess and OoT.

Spyro the Dragon >>>> Mario

Another example of why Demons Souls is the best game this generation.

Ok, maybe I'm just dead wrong! Good to see all the S&K love. :D

Big ups, bros.

Well if you want some Sonic-related controversy, I'll try.

- I liked Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis version, never had a Saturn)
- The Knuckles portions of Adventure 1 and 2 were okay to me
- I feel that Unleashed would have been better received if it had been Knuckles instead of the Werehog and they just called it Sonic and Knuckles '08 or something. I never played it though so this is just speculation.

Non-Sonic related (maybe) controversy

- I think Mario 64 starts to fall apart after Lethal Lava Land.
- On that note, Banjo-Kazooie is miles better.
- I think Jak 2 is on equal standing with Jak 1, Jak 3 being the worst (of 3 outstanding games).
- I feel like if Sony hadn't failed so hard and ended up trying to compete for Microsoft's market, we would've had a Jak 4 by now, maybe even a 5 and 6, along with Uncharted.
- I feel that having to turn to the digital market to find certain types of games is a dissservice. If I want a 3D platformer this gen not named Mario or Ratchet, I shouldn't have to settle for smaller digital games or PSN classics.
- I think the Uncharted games are good, but I think that people look too much at the production values and overrate them as a result.

Some more:

Shining Force III is my favorite SRPG, ranking over the Fire Emblem games. I love the special attacks, weapon levels, great pacing/challenge, and fantastic audiovisual quality that this game(s?) brought to the Sega Saturn. Very repayable, too, and with Motoi Sakuraba's most boring soundtrack yet!

3rd Gen Pokemon all the way—grew up on said stuff, and Hoenn's the region of champions.

D2 was good. It outdid the usual Kojima project in every single way, and is possibly the most intentionally-insane game ever created. And the music is good too.

Artdink made great games. I actually don't know how well-known the company is with GAF, but there's never a better time to find out.
