After watching End of Eva, I'm reporting back. The first half was great. The second half was not great. I still maintain, as I said in my OP, that the show would be really great if it was longer, as in at least twice as long, maybe not absurdly long like Naruto or DBZ, but maybe around 50 episodes.
Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Gurren Lagann all end rather well, but I think this is because they have less to explain. Their foundations are pretty easy to pick up and run with: bounty hunters, itinerant warriors, and so on. These shows have less baggage, and one feels content after episode 26. Neon Genesis Evangelion is just too stuffed with backstory and content. While I don't find its philosophizing and pyschologizing that profound, I think it would be better if it was less jammed into an episode and instead gradually eased in.
With that said, the original episodes 25 and 26 are just ridiculous as an ending. They're artsy and experimental, yeah, but not proper ways to end a show, especially after building it up so much. I read that there were time constraints and budget problems, so I assume this was a quicker and more cost effective way of finishing up. But it really made no sense to me. Perhaps they could have used ep 25 and done something with 26. But End of Eva, I guess, makes up for it in the end.
Does anyone know what the fan reaction to eps 25 and 26 was in Japan when NGE originally aired? Was End of Eva planned or was it a response to fan response?
Anyway, I'm glad that End of Eva actually clears up a good chunk of the questions one has after watching ep 26 - most importantly, what comes next after Shinji kills Kaworu.
But I didn't really dig the second half's avant-garde approach to a final ending. It's just too much. This is stretching it a bit but it sort of reminded me of Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey, which I like a lot. It was as successful in that movie but not as successful here.
But the first half of End of Eva was pretty dope. I love the scene when Asuka fights the remaining Evas - she looks so psycho! As well as when Shinji reacts to the corpse of Eva 02.
Does anyone know what Gendo Ikari says to Ritsuko Akagi before he shoots her? It's inaudible, which I assume is intended, but what's the speculation?
Anyway, I'm most definitely a Misato fan all the way. Heh. But clearly the best character is...
