Starhawk (Closed) Beta Testing thread of impressions and questions.

Hey guys! Finally got accepted into the forums! Long time lurker, first time poster.

Anyways, anyone else feel that the pace of this game is too slow and resources too constrained?

To elaborate, I played majority of my time in Warhawk on the ground, and loved capping points to spawn at for my team. Well in Starhawk because there are no vehicles in the spawn, unless someone decides to build one, I find myself having to run to an area to set up a forward spawn. That takes about 2 minutes. Then I have to build up this new spawn point with important structures like a Bunker, Jeep Depot, defenses, etc. This is mostly accomplished by myself because the rest of the team is still in a spawn trying to get weapons and vehicles for themselves and building the world's most defended flag. So if all goes well then it is 5 minutes into the game and we have one crazy home base and one bare bones spawn point outside of that.

I say if all goes well because since there is a lack of existing resources like rocket launchers and vehicles so leaving to start up new spawns you are extremely vulnerable to a rouge Starhawk that can come in and destroy everything you just worked on. Also there is the chance that 6-7 others at the home base will spend all of the resources, therefore, making it hard to build a new spawn.

I think it would be better if there was a jeep depot and Hawk launch pad already existing at the home base and place a few weapons as pickups throughout the map. Nothing crazy, maybe just 2-3 Rocket launchers and sniper rifle pickups. Doing those two simple things would speed up the pace of the game, reduce wasted buildings just to get a weapon, and give players more ways to arm themselves.

Is there a tutorial or something?

So much shit is going on at once, buildings dropping by, people flying, shit blowing up.....

Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Basically all I was doing was playing a regular online shooter, and while that was fun, I would like to know more about what is going on (specially in regards to the buildings)

:C

You can make a Jeep garage immediately after you spawn. You can make a Hawk pad, jetpack dispenser, or bunker about 10 seconds after spawning. Once you've played a bit more you'll figure out how to get things done and move around the map more quickly.

If your getting overwhelmed in full matches create your own server and spend an hour running around, building things, and getting a general feel for the game. Then just join a server that only has a few people in it to test your new knowledge against others.

haha i was playing a match today and everyone on my team built nothing but walls asfkl;asdfhsf;kfd;sdf. pretty funny

bleh i don't like the acid map , space map was pretty cool, need to play some more

Oh I get that, but the problem is if I build a jeep then I have no resources when I get into the jeep to move out. So then I have to mine barrels and build up a new spawn from scratch. Then there is the fact that it takes 6 rift energy units to get a simple rocket launcher to properly defend myself. I still need to spend more time with it, but nearly every match I join it is just slow and boring getting things started and before I know it 5 or more minutes has passed and little progress has been made.

Like I said before it would be awesome if the home base had a jeep station and possibly a launch pad already there when the game started as that alone would improve the pace of the game a lot.

I haven't really used mics in this game yet, mainly due to beta, but WOW just some of the decisions my teammates make, makes me want to instantly turn on my mic to tell them to stop lol.

Example: Earlier, I built a supply base(You know for weapons and such) and then a teammate was standing very close to one I built and I was about to lay another supply base down. I had to try to distract him and shoot towards my supply base to let him know there's already one that has been built.

Then, sometimes you have someone who puts a building in a really funky spot lol.

They definitely will have to change icons or something on map to let players know and definitely give them a tutorial.

Overall I'm really liking all the changes they made and I'm having a lot of fun.

The bunker/supply depot is important. You must build one at the beginning of the game to fend off jeeps, war hawks, and other enemies. The turret is not powerful enough. The death ray is too expensive. With a supply depot, everyone becomes more powerful.

This^

I have seen sniper towers dropped right next to each as well. It's really frustrating considering there is a limited number of buildings you can build.

My problem is it takes about 30 seconds to get a supply bunker built to arm yourself. That doesn't sound like a long time but it is when you tack on to that you need to get so many other things developed as well. Would be nice if there was a couple of rocket pickups around the map, maybe in areas that are natural selections for a pod beacon, to provide some needed firepower when outside of the main base.

LOL, this is actually a pretty fun game and reminds me a lot of Warhawk. It's just super complicated and I have no idea what's going on at the moment. So far my best moment was hopping in a jeep and running over about five guys in row and getting some road kill achievement or something. These things are really fast.

The Beta is running 15-20 minute matches, you have to make due with what you got.

Don't go spend crazy.

On the space map spawn near the forward tower with three rift energy barrels on it. Shoot those, then turn to the left and shoot the two barrels in the distance. Drop down on the bridge leading to the center, shoot the two nearest barrels and the other two on the other side if they're still there. Drop a pod beacon. PROFIT!

On Acid Sea spawn to the left onto the big pipe to the right of the metal bridge. When you get half way across you can shoot the three RE barrels in the left on the forward position. Run the rest of the way, jump onto the tower, then jump down to safety on the right. Shoot the barrels to your immediate left, and by the time you're there the first set of barrels you shot should have respawned. Drop a pod beacon. PROFIT!

Next on the agenda is typically a supply bunker and then a Jetpack Pad. With ammo and jetpack you can launch a forward attack or more quickly navigate the map to mine more RE.

It's all about establishing and efficient RE mining line quickly.

The biggest problem I've run into are noob assholes that mine RE and don't do shit with it. HEY DUMBASSES! Build pod beacons!

My six essential items for a forward outpost are:

- Pod Beacon
- Supply Depot
- Jetpack Pad
- Sentry Guns on top of Supply Depot X3

Follow the steps provided above and PROFIT! :D

It will be easier in the final game when you can clan up and people know what in the hell they're doing.

Trust me, it's better than the early beta when RE costs for items really sucked. Six RE for a Hawk Pad? Took forever to get in the air and then the air game was total ass.

That's what I have been doing, but that is still about 3-5 minutes into the game by the time you build all of that, because everyone else is building stuff at the base still.

I do wish 30 minute rounds would return, and I can't wait for 32 player maps to start. However, all I am asking for is a slightly faster start by having just a few simple resources existing on the map.

Remember, in the full game the campaign will pretty much serve as a tutorial to build up skills for multiplayer. I'm enjoying the beta so far, it feels smoother than the private beta did when I tried that. Hawks still feel a little too delicate for my liking right now though.

You should not need to wait so long for the bunker if you can find barrels to shoot. You teammates will usually build other buildings.

Part of me wouldn't mind having a permanent supply bunker in each team base just to prevent some of the horrific base rape situations I've seen. There's not a whole hell of a lot you can do when you spawn with a crap gun and three grenades and the enemy is dropping walls with turrets all over your base.

The exchange would be that the permanent bunker would not be shielded so enemies could attack you from outside.

Still, the game is a beta and there are no clans so of course playing with randoms is going to make playing suck ass. Being on a good team here is more important than it was in Warhawk because you don't have free provisions at your base like in Warhawk.

Plus those horrific base rapes I've been victim of have all been aided by wildly incompetent team mates.

That's not a bad idea. Add a jeep depot with the same rules and we are in business!! lol

They only need to put some barrels in the base so that people can build bunkers or other stuff earlier at the beginning. It's more open ended this way. Who knows, someone may be able to find other interesting winning strategies.

Just wanted to toss out there, doing what I suggested you all do with that Rift Energy line I was able to drop a jetpack pad and a supply bunker in home base in two minutes actual. I was watching the clock.

^_^ LOL FIVE MINUTES LOL ^_^

Nice tactics dude.
Any gaf server and gaffers playing tonight?

Well congrats 2 minutes in and the home base has a supply bunker and a jet pack area. Now in another 3 minutes you can set up a forward spawn. Complete with a bunker, jeep, and/or jet pack of it's own.

*gasp* 2+3=5 minutes ^_^

Fortress Builders on Acid Sea are getting on my nerves. People sure do love building walls around the entire perimeter of the flag base. Makes me wanna scream!

Also, feels like the game has been tweaked well enough since the last beta. I remember low-scoring CTF games last time, but now it seems typical to have 3-4 captures each round.

Fortress Builders on Acid Sea are getting on my nerves. People sure do love building walls around the entire perimeter of the flag base. Makes me wanna scream!

That has been a huge problem. Which is why I suggested a few, just a few, existing resources like weapons and jeeps to get the game started a little faster and forward spawns can be placed earlier before the Fortress Builders and the Snipers that drop towers everywhere use all of the resources.

Your sarcasm is duly noted, and I'll counter with - jackass random players don't make use of my lovely forward fortifications. So suck on that.

It's the curse of playing randoms. If I were playing with people I know, who know how to play the game, and aren't a bucket of retards we could dominate the map.

Your whine is invalid. Have fun sucking at Starhawk! :D

If they're on your team, reclaim the walls. It's a waste of your time, but it frees up your BnB allocation.

If it's the enemy team, blow that shit up. Free points! :D

I'm having a lot of fun with this beta. I'm still not that great, but the matchmaking is doing a good job of pairing me up with people of similar skill level I think, because I'm usually getting more kills than deaths. I still feel like I haven't cracked the surface yet as far as strategies to employ, and I think you could get some awesome games going on if everyone had mics, but I'm still enjoying myself a lot. There's just so much satisfaction to be had by flying in, transforming to a mech, wrecking some shit, and then flying out again/getting into a dogfight in the air.

Is there any splitscreen online support? My roommate wanted to play too, but I couldn't find a splitscreen option so we ended up just taking turns.

Just know that when you play on Acid Sea, you only need to drop 2 walls down in a " v " shape on each end of the flag base to block off the ladders.

I feel like everybody needs to know this.

That's a pretty horrible strategy tbh. Most times the person getting your flag is going to be using a jetpack so the walls aren't going to help at all. They usually just make it harder for your own team to score a flag since the flag carrier can't use their jetpack.

These jetpack guys who just knife all the time are so annoying :|

Be thankful they've toned it down from earlier in the Beta. The knife attack would lock on and track a good 5-10 game feet.

That said, I still want to see some anti jetpack defenses in the game. They can be a huge menace. I was thinking a vulnerable spot on the chest (like Photon/Lasertag), similar to the red eye on the sentry guns. It's a one shot kill with the sniper rifle for the sentry guns, but for jetpackers they should just be vulnerable to every damn weapon.

A good jetpack player is the new Warhawk style hovering base rapist.

I said I wasn't going to play, but I slipped in a few games. Last match was fantastic. My team spawned at my forward base, used my provisions (Supplier Award yeah!), and build complimentary structures instead of redundant ones.

Same here, man. :(

*sigh* What I've noticed is that the "excitement" is missing. Warhawk has this "excitement" where any moment can be a "WOWHawk" moment. This is not an RTS/Shooter Hybrid. This is more of an RPG. You see everyone camping their own base to "gather" the minerals/points to build something. You have a 10-15 minute round and by the time you'be satisfactory amount of points, there isn't enough time. There was no neck-to-neck battle. Everyone builds a wall around the flag and it's a draw. Then there are some who will build a spawn point on a platform on top of Space behind your base and you're practically fucked by then if the team sucks.

Vehicles are useless for me and to get vehicle, I have to spend more minerals/points which I rather save for spawn point and weapons. It's just... not fun anymore.

Shooting is also not very tight. Shoulder zoom is ridiculous and it's a battle of melee in the end. Warhawk was a great third person game with the traits of Battlefield 2 and excitement of Counter-Strike. Now it's a very unstructured hybrid of SOCOM, Starcraft and Section 8. The game has no identity anymore...

Thing is, Warhawk felt "right" the first moment I picked up the joystick. Starhawk just feels wrong, somehow delayed, slow, sluggish, unfun. I can't jump over that barrier so I can't comment on the new gameplay.

I'm hoping this will change as players learn to get resources from killing the opposition. The only way this game really shines is with a team of organized players who fulfill specific roles. Otherwise, as you said, it turns into a gathering fest so people can spawn up ridiculous things and push forward.

Have to agree, the best games are when people really work as a team. If people look at what others have created, focus on the objective and learn about the game it works very well, having great fun and really looking forward to the full game.

Nothing more annoying than 3 bunkers, 3 jeep ports in your base!

I've played a few matches of the beta. I don't really get it. Most games end either 0-0 on CTF, or on DM, they don't even get to the 50 cap. I also get disconnected a lot. And it crashes a lot. I like the idea of the building, I don't think the shooting is too bad, I like the jetpacks and the vehicles, but it's all so empty and lifeless at the moment.

But that's not a stupid player. That's a shitty map layout with the shitty BnB issue fogging the fun. When you're concentrating in front of you and fiddling around with the menu to summon a drop, knowing one dropped next to you is difficult. Too much managing involved and communication needed when people just want what they need to have fun. Talk about limiting your sales. You have to keep some things dumb.

Sadly have to agree. Every time I turn the game off, I am leaving because I am bored with the experience. I go back to it because I have a short memory - so now I have renamed the folder the game is saved to as "Boring" so that I remember what the experience is before I launch it.

This close to release I do not see how they will be able to inject the WOWhawk back into this, but as a starting point I think one of the major issues is just how unstructured the B&B system makes the game. You spend more time trying to build something up that that actually becomes the game and not the actual tension and excitement of grabbing territory or rushing in and out of the enemy base. Add to that a slower overall feel to the game.

Unfortunately it seems that they came up with the idea of B&B and then tried to build a game around that concept rather than taking the awesome of Warhawk and introducing B&B mechanics...

I had a feeling most wouldn't like the mini-RTS gameplay. The art design doesn't help it with everything looking similar.

Deleted the beta after playing it for two nights. At this stage the game is below average at best.
I agree. Very mediocre. Which is a shame because warhawk was/is fantastic.

I want bright and defined environments and bases. Nothing stands out in this game. Walls look like buildings look like turrets look like towers look like bunkers look like depots look like....

I had a feeling most wouldn't like the mini-RTS gameplay. The art design doesn't help it with everything looking similar.

Yeah - the art is definitely lacking.

The RTS elements could be very cool if they were secondary to the gameplay. If there were bases and control points like in Warhawk but you had the ability to add defenses and upgrades then it could have been cool. But actually having to build the control points is just giving to much power to a player who may then feel burdened with creating the game first and playing it second.

One thing that people don't seem to realize though is that you can recoup some of your energy costs but building something, grabbing the goods then destroying the building. This makes expansion a lot faster.

LB really do need to make it possible to buy vehicles from enemy structures though. And nerf the jet pack. I can easily rack up a top score and have no deaths just by abusing the jetpack and over abundance of rockets.

I too really enjoyed Warhawk, but perhaps didn't play it as much as some in here. But I am also enjoying this very much, the building option is great and really adds a strategic element, but probably 50% of the games I have played have also had some great excitement of rushing in and out of bases etc

I think as said earlier, it takes the right group of people, people who know what all of the things do (yellow buttons, how to get rift etc) and you can have a blast

Looking forward to seeing the other maps, vehicles and weapons

I feel bad for the team now. They tried so hard coming up with something unique but it isn't going to interest the majority and spark up the charts.

Here's hoping for a no BnB mode...

That idea would have been PERFECT. Damn, missed opportunity.

That idea would have been PERFECT. Damn, missed opportunity.

Yep. I was actually expecting it to be there, especially when they showed wall upgrade. I was expecting upgrade for all buildings. Alas, I don't see any.

The wall not connecting with map-based walls/buildings kills the whole purpose of a wall and you can't barricade certain position. Another biggest problem with BnB is how sluggish it is. By the time you find the right location to place it, someone takes you out whether it's a hawk or a jeep.

Last but not least, the maps feel very "small" for some reason. I think it's the lack of anything around you.

That's a pretty horrible strategy tbh. Most times the person getting your flag is going to be using a jetpack so the walls aren't going to help at all. They usually just make it harder for your own team to score a flag since the flag carrier can't use their jetpack.

Not really, since that jetpack guy still has to take the flag back on foot. Walls atleast prevent people from rushing in with an suv. The only option to get the flag back is taking the passageway underneath the bridges ( which nobody seems to use, ever. )

Also, you can jump into the flag base when its walled in from the large elevated area behind it.

I had a feeling most wouldn't like the mini-RTS gameplay. The art design doesn't help it with everything looking similar.

Thats puzzling. Just based off of the beta, Starhawk is already imo the most original shooter of this console generation. The mini-rts gameplay is what sold me on it, and I hate modern RTS games.
