Just out of curiosity for future reference, not that I'll be partaking in them anymore, but are GAF IH's serious mode, casual, or do they simply vary between the two depending on who is playing?

Pretty much what Phandy said, some people take it seriously, others don't, and it varies game to game. I haven't played in many, but I'm pretty casual with it.

Milkman: It might be never, the S-Tier HoNGAF players don't like dota enough to play it, and some of A-Tier is still <100 gp.

That's a real shame because you're a cool guy to play with :/ That inhouse last night where SWAG CHOSE ANTIMAGE and HYUNA CHOSE NATURE'S PROPHET (both on the same team) followed up by Lich and Tidehunter was the most tryhard inhouse game I've ever played. I think the fact that those heroes were present is what caused us to take the game more seriously than usual. When I see those first two characters, my immediate thought is, "Oh wow they really want to win this game," and that makes me want to play hard to make sure they don't win. I'm sure swift and 1.09 felt the same.

Some people get a lot more frustrated with losing than others do, though. Try not to let one or two people turn you off from playing with everyone else.

hey thanks for picking huskar and shitting on me every team fight, the only hero who wanted to have fun.

<snip>

any advice or encouragement will be greatly appreciated.

1. The shop is a weird beast which you begin to understand after a couple of weeks. Purge did a decent look at items a month or two ago on youtube here. It's missing the new items but I'm sure someone will explain them.

2. Ctrl is draw, mash alt to angrily ping (edit: Please, for the love of christ, ping people who are coming towards someones lane or if you are coming to gank. People will often be too transfixed on getting another last hit to notice the minimap in the early game).

3. That's your stash, any items you buy when you weren't in range of a shop goes there either teleport back to get them or use the courier to bring them to you.

If you're REALLY stuck with the UI then go in a practice match turn on cheats and type -gold 16000 buy some items till you understand how to move and combine things. Also add this to your autoexec.cfg:

Code:
lias "hon_courier" "marx_select_courier"
alias "marx_select_courier" "dota_select_courier; alias hon_courier marx_select_hero"
alias "marx_select_hero" "+dota_camera_follow; alias hon_courier marx_select_courier"

bind "z" "hon_courier"

It'll allow you to quickly swap between courier and your character with z so you can tell the courier to pick up your items and bring them to you with a few quick key presses and be back in control before you know it.

4. Stick to easier tanky characters with simple abilities and easy escapes, at least until you gain some map awareness and feel comfortable enough to learn how to position yourself successfully for team fights.

Lastly don't be discouraged by some of the in houses or bad games. Many of us get incredibly frustrated in the heat of the moment and will often remark at bad play even if we are playing like dog shit ourselves. If you have to mute people and post game report if they are REALLY bad it only takes a couple of reports to get them muted for a week. So you can gain some satisfaction from that. :>

The problem I've had lately with inhouses is that it seems like we need four hard carries on one team half of the games we play.
I usually don't get the chance to play the heroes I play the best/like to play just because I'd rather play support with ok lanes than picking the fifth carry.

and this issue is separate from picking fun heroes vs. good heroes, that doesn't annoy me that much (unless it's a clear ma win ofc)

support brood was pretty pro though :D

I think we need to make it clear whether we are trying to learn new heroes (god I am fucking terrible at NS- sorry) or if people are new and try to balance the teams with that in mind as things normally begin to kick off after team x with a brand new Drow and Viper get double footed curb stomped by experienced an Huskar or Pudge for example.

*nods*

And I'll try some tanks today. I definitely need more time to get comfortable with the maps. a fellow GAFer just told me how to play a game with just bots, so I'll take those opportunities to familiarize myself with the maps and characters.

I'll check out that store video asap. thanks again.

Dunno what that last part means but shucks. Wouldn't mind playing against A-Tier HoNgaf.

neki blame swag and hyuna for that

Yeah ksan, those games where we played together.... man that was some ugly team composition :lol. Frequently 3+ carries or single target dpsers. I don't mind fun picks either as long as they keep in mind team composition and lanes.

support brood is BEST BROOD!

your first mistake was thinking that swag wouldnt swindle you the first opportunity he got

The solution to inhouses is to only play single draft (when it comes out)

your first mistake was thinking that swag wouldnt swindle you the first opportunity he got

What else can you expect from an angry and bitter person?

that's because we're all try hards that have never better to do besides playing dota and raging at people who are bad at it.

A lot of the IH issues are people not communicating, pre-game and during the game.

^^

I've seen some nonsensical hero picks and lane choices that could be easily fixed if people would just say what they are planning on doing before the game starts.

I've seen less of the typical pub style 5 carry team comp, but I've ended up in a double support lane more in gaf inhouses than I can count. Worst being a double melee support across from a ranged carry

Of course I don't take the game that seriously at all, so I don't really mind people picking whatever they want or going random, but some people obviously do.

It's interesting to follow an individual from his debuts to the genre to present.

While it doesn't say that much coming from me, I'm gonna give rac the ol' Orson Welles clap.gif right now. I've seen him in his first steps in HoN, and while he's still far from being a Na.Vi member, the man has shown great progress and dedication, and it shows.

So thumbs up!

Windrunner is really fun. Really really fun. Especially force staffing mans when they are at no health near enemies.

Okay, I decided to change my controls up a little bit. My items used to be 123456, now they are HoN-style (Alt+QWEASD). 123456 back on control groups. I feel like I don't use them often enough and rely too much on ctrl+click when I have multiple units. Also for some reason I never noticed the "Activate Glyph" hotkey option, so I put that on G.

Also, Mirana is fun as hell once you get good at that arrow. There was one time I died early on, but then I came back to the bottom lane with Riki, and instead of making myself visible, I hid behind trees. When Storm Spirit stepped too far forward I hit him with an Arrow and Riki finished the job.

Is there a way to activate an autocast ability without right clicking it? I saw a post saying it is alt + ability key. I tried it and it's not working.

I just realized that you can buy/grab stuff from the enemy team's shop :I, it didn't feel kosher.

Should be Alt/Ability. In the hot keys, check what you have in the boxes below the abilities, which are just labeled "Subtitle" for some reason.

Seems they've added the ability to sell items from your stash, don't remember seeing it in any changelog.

Yeah, it must be server side, since it wasn't there a few days ago.

I love silencer, nothing like strolling into a middle of a fight and watching everyone run around as they can't get there spell combos out!

Don't enable rac - he sucks. Can't handle my big Warlock plays.
