NFL Super Bowl XLVI |OT| Matchup More Unwanted Than Madonna's Halftime Show

I had recorded the Giants-49ers game and brought it with me to work to watch during some down time. This is hard to admit, but as much as I respected Eli's game this year I'm completely impressed by how he took an absolute beating from that 49ers d-line without complaint or injury. Except for a few times, he rarely looked skittish in the pocket, and on several plays he stood out like a column while chaos reigned around him. Then he'd get pounded to the ground, get right back up, and do it again.

That one shot of him getting up with his chin strap on his nose, helmet askew and shoulder pad pulled out is classic. For such a doughy, unassuming-looking guy with zero emotive capability he's a damn stud in the pocket.

Glad he's not a drama queen either. Imagine it was Ben taking that beating? It'd be like that scene in family guy when Peter gets popped in the knee and flat lays on the ground holding his booboo, only x100.

I've said a few times already that the biggest difference between Eli of now and Eli of five years ago is his pocket presence, and that huge improvement alone is why he's been so successful as of late.

Ravens fans are bitter as fuck on the sports radio.

Some guy called saying the Ravens deserved to win because the Patriots used no huddle offense. It gives too much of an advantage over the defense.

At least one player isn't any better.

Call it sour grapes, but Ravens LB Brendon Ayanbadejo likely won’t be among the hundreds of millions of people watching Super Bowl XLVI when the Patriots take on the Giants.

“Truth being told I am not sure I’m going to watch the unSuper Bowl since the two best teams are sitting at home #ravens #49ers,” Ayanbadejo wrote Monday on Twitter.

Apparently losses like Sunday’s 23-20 heartbreaker don’t go away easily, if at all.

Eli just wasn't prepared for the NFL out of the gate. You're seeing the natural maturity of a high caliber QB unfold. Not the best market for that, but still a treat.

Direct quote from what I had been guessing is a Steelers fan from another board who keeps calling the Giants, and Eli, lucky.

You give him the offensive line of the pittsburg steelers and ask him to do what ben does and he will be making more "eh" throws than you know what to do with.

He is afforded the luxury of an amazing o line, and when faced with true -in-your-face pressure defenses "chucks it up"

and so far..all his chuck ups have come out rosy as opposed to grossman.

I swear this is the calling card of the Giants NFC East rivals for the most part. Go to any Eagles/Cowboys (Redskins less so so I'll leave them out of this) board and everything is about the Giants being the luckiest team ever.

I said it before - I'll take supposed luck and wins over "skill" and losses.

Frankly, I don't think you get to the Super Bowl and have the types of runs the Giants had in '07 and '11 without some level of luck and things breaking their way in some instances. I think you can say that about most teams that move on to the Super Bowl.

I equate it to an nba ref waiting to see if a shot goes in before calling a foul. When it doesnt go in, the foul is called. Use whatever semantics you want but i didnt like the call

or like a late defensive holding call once the pass falls incomplete?

It's exaggerated, but Eli does have a superior O-Line. The beating Eli took on Sunday Ben takes weekly.

Post season isn't complete until the just bounced Rats complain that they're the best team despite losing.

Seriously, every damn year they, and their coach, pull out a list of why they're the better team even though they get ousted every time. Now they're crying about the scoreboard showing a first down or some bullshit.

Been in meetings all day but it's nice to see Harbaugh embracing his Schwartz.

I watch every Steeler game since it's on every week in my area and I find that garbage. Also half of the sacks Ben takes are because of his vintage pump fakes. Just somebody pointing out the Giants have an "amazing OL" simply did not watch any Giants football this year, and simply base it off the Packers rusher 2-3 DL in their game a week ago. Most fans don't even know who starts on the Giants line, much less if they're any good anymore (Kareem McKenzie, hello).

You're 100% correct, but no Steelers fan will ever agree with you. They are way too heavily invested in the "our line sucks" garbage.

That's an odd comment, since essentially Eli impersonated Roethlisberger for large parts of that game. He found creases in the pocket when available and sacrificed his body to large hits in order to stand up to make a throw.

Big Ben was destroyed by the 49ers in a similar MNF game a few weeks back, and I still don't know why Tomlin kept him in the game so long with that high ankle sprain and the playoffs assured. Eli was hit just as hard this past weekend.

Your line is better than the Steelers /= "Amazing O-Line"

Besides, how Ben takes the sacks is ultimately irrelevant. He takes more of a pounding on the regular.

Eh, I don't think our line is as bad as most Steelers' fans believe. Biggest problem is and always has been Kemoeatu. Guy has all the talent in the world, and a head full of rocks.

Talent wise, they aren't the worst in the league. The problem is that 20 minutes into the regular season, the injuries start to mount. 10 different starting line ups this year. Shuttling guys in at every position destroys any sense of cohesion. There were many games when the Steelers line couldn't pick up a simple twist stunt, let alone beat their man one on one.

Half of the sacks are on Ben for holding onto the ball too long looking for the home run play, but are you saying that our oline does not suck?

Not that you seem to need a good oline to win the Superbowl these days.

Also I also kind of felt the Niners got hosed on that fumble call (most of the time they call that a fumble), but whatever the refs suck. Don't let it come to that.

THANK YOU lord jeebus. Steelers whine and cry about how shitty their O Line is as if it's the worst in the history of the sport. No Oline in the game would be good enough to hold for the 7 seconds it takes for Ben's fat fingers to move the ball forward.

Seriously though. He takes a beating because of how he plays the position. The O Line isn't good, but it'd look a lot better with just about anybody else at QB.

For 49ers fans who think Alex Smith has bad WRs and it's all their fault and he is in fact an NFL caliber QB

I wrote last week that Smith was the difference against the Saints in the Divisional Playoff, a game in which he was outstanding, especially in critical moments. Unfortunately for the 49ers, against the Giants, Smith was also the difference.

Let’s start with the first 3rd down of the game. It was 3rd and 4; the 49ers had already gotten 1 first down. Michael Crabtree ran a sail route (kind of a flattened corner route). He was wide open. Smith, with no pressure in the pocket, did not pull the trigger. It was a throw that had to be made. The result of the play was an incompletion on a late check down to Frank Gore.

The first play of the 49ers fourth offensive possession was also telling. It was a shot play, a called big play off Smith boot action. Williams ran a deep post off a stutter move. The double move froze Corey Webster, and Williams raced by him. The design of the play worked. Smith overthrew Williams by 5 yards. A good throw, and it was a touchdown. An adequate throw, and it was still a 50 yard gain. This was another missed opportunity.

But the first play of the second half was perhaps the most indicative of Smith’s performance. You come out of halftime with a specific plan. The 49ers went to one of their staples, the wheel route. A shot play right out of the gate. Delanie Walker, from his line of scrimmage tight end position, ran by a slipping Webster. The concept worked to perfection. Walker screamed down the sideline. Smith again did not pull the trigger from a clean pocket. He ended up getting sacked for a 7 yard loss.

These are just a few examples of Smith’s tentative and uncertain pocket play last Sunday. The bottom line was this: Smith was reluctant to let it loose on routes and throws that were not only well designed, but were open. They were primary reads. No progressions were involved.

Most of our big plays are generated by Ben scrambling around and holding the ball to buy our receivers time. It goes both ways. There is a reason Ben has a great YPA.

Also prior to this year as many of the sacks were to be blamed on play calling and the personnel as Ben holding onto it for forever. I mean when Hines Ward is your possession receiver the qb is going to get sacked a lot.

We do have some holes in our line, but they actually played really well for the few games we had a stable lineup in October. But our team is old and busted and everyone got injured near the end of the season, including the line.
