The fuck?

Yeah, that's pretty sad.
I personally would not want to be associated with Steve Jobs, but Obama (probably more his campaign staff) wants to try to associate with the cult of apple... Not for the stances Steve took, but due to his popularity.

Yes, but its a slippery slope. I'm not defending what Kosmo said but rather the type of unexpected and undesired effects it can have on dialogue and conversation in this thread.

I doubt it will have any undesired effects on dialogue. People will just learn to hyper link sources and references to potentially vague posts.

The rush of some of you to label people racist or whatever is embarrassing. It just shows how conditioned you are. I once got called racist because I said Mrs. Obama was ugly.

I thought you didn't believe in conspiracies.

Are you saying you believe that people can be conditioned?

Also, I don't understand when making money by working became worse than making money by not working in the conservative world view, even when the former are drinking alcohol or smoking pot.

He will reference the Buffet rule but she doesn't need to be there lol

With her being there the media will probably talk more about the Buffett Rule. The media loves props like that. Without it, it may only be a foot note. :(

No, it should not. It is your responsibility to not play with fire. For readers, it's absrud to ask them to wait and not be offended until they are absolutely sure that this enormously racist or sexist or offensive comment wasn't just a reference to something.

You cannot hide behind referential humor to shield yourself in all cases. The concept has limits, particularly on a message board. As an extreme example, if I just came in and said "All you black people are stupid," and then thirty minutes later pointed to some joke eddie murray made in 1973 and omg how did you guys not remember that, I've clearly crossed the line. Disclaimer: I am not suggesting this specific incident with two auto workers is that obscure, the example is deliberately extreme to prove the point.

Simple solution to this problem: don't make racist jokes at all. That way, you don't have to hope that everybody "gets it."

So basically he probably would have been a lot less likely to have gotten banned if he put that news video in his post, right?

Also, I don't understand when making money by working became worse than making money by not working in the conservative world view, even when the former are drinking alcohol or smoking pot.

Not defending the ridiculously defensive attitude conservatives have for people who make money simply by where they put their money, but if a person works with heavy machinery and/or dangerous equipment I would rather that person not work that day than work while inebriated or stoned, even if they got paid for that day regardless.

And just so we are clear I am not saying those guys in the youtube video necessarily worked with heavy machinery. I know they were auto workers but I would need to know more about their work before I can make a statement about them specifically.

Probably helps with the OWS crowd as well - it's just stupid ironic (probably not too ironic considering the average American) that some of the OWS people really worship Jobs.

Chuck Todd (on Morning Joe) had the same reaction as me to Mitt releasing his taxes today. They were tying to bury it in post-debate and SOTU coverage but they pretty much teed it up for Obama

The fuck?

I am pretty thoroughly tired of the Cult of Jobs.

Yeah, that's pretty sad.
I personally would not want to be associated with Steve Jobs, but Obama (probably more his campaign staff) wants to try to associate with the cult of apple... Not for the stances Steve took, but due to his popularity.

Laurene Powell Jobs has done quite a bit for education in America. She was also appointed by Obama in December 2010 to be a Member of the White House Council for Community Solutions, which is charged with advising the President on the best ways to help communities across America solve important social challenges around education and job creation. And she sits on the boards of directors of Teach for America and Global Fund for Women.

I don't think she's there because Steve died. She's very accomplished, but posters like you will dwarf anything she's done because you don't like her deceased husband.

There are no absolute rules in conversation, let alone on GAF. How does one define when someone else is being "a dick?" Because being "a dick" is bannable on GAF. How would we even begin to apply absolute, strict guidelines to that?

Just as in real life, every case is different -- this is precisely why we have juries, because even real, legally accepted laws are not absolute and need to be intrepeted on a case by case basis. Context matters, posting history matters (just like a racist friend is more likely serious when he says something racist, while a very progressive friend dating a black woman is much less likely to be serious), word choice matters, obscurity of reference matters.

If you want simple examples, it's okay to post a "haters gonna hate" GIF in the "post funny GIFs thread," because that's the entire purpose of the thread. It is absolutely bannable in many other contexts, because we have deemed it unconstructive and antagonistic.

There are lots of variables, and it is the job of the moderators to weigh each of them and decide. Our purpose is to make discussion more reasonable, constructive, and interesting. Offensive content is less offensive if it is backed by reason and evidence.

Also, I don't understand when making money by working became worse than making money by not working in the conservative world view, even when the former are drinking alcohol or smoking pot.
Oh, it's been going on for quite a while.
Nouveau riche have been used as a derogatory term since at least the french revolution.

Also, I don't understand when making money by working became worse than making money by not working in the conservative world view, even when the former are drinking alcohol or smoking pot.
It was dumb "undercover" reporting anyway, worthy of Fox News standards of course. Workers drinking during breaks omg Union workers are lazy potheads.

Wonder why no one does a report on CEO's and corporate executives on what they do all day in their office.

Yes, who cares about the people who actually invest in the company who paid for those jobs...why should they be given any protection when we have people downing 40's and smoking weed at lunch to protect!?

I knew this was going to get a rise out of somebody. Well played Kosmo, you never cease to amaze me with your mastery of projection and disingenuous concern trolling.

Oh, I'm sure you're so right. Her being at the speech has nothing to with her dead husband, but everything to do with some fluffy appointments on some corporate boards.

most of Kosmo's posts are unconstructive and antagonistic, maybe just not on purpose. Doesn't really bother me anymore as it's just an expectation when i see the avatar.

On a side note, Chris Christie is going to veto the approval of gay marriage in NJ if it makes it to his desk. His reasoning, its too big of a decision, it needs to be a constitutional amendement. I'm failing to see where in the NJ constitution marriage is distinguished as between a man and a woman

Okay, recap for those reading:

1) Moderation is not done by comittee. It is the job of the moderators to make decisions on what is inappropriate, unconstructive, or antagonistic. Moderating something as subjective and complex as conversation between dozens of people includes a huge variety of variables. The tools we use to moderate cannot possibly be as simplistic as "unless you explicitly say the N word or call someone a gay pejorative, you're fine." This requires reasonable decision making by those in charge.

2) If you are thinking of posting something that can readily be interpreted as racist or prejudiced in some manner, don't post it. It's possible that everyone will get your obscure reference. It's possible that -- despite the fact that we're typing, not speaking to one another -- your tone of voice will come through. But if you don't want to chance being banned, then simply don't risk it; problem solved.

You can not reasonably expect dozens or hundreds of readers to understand your offensive remark was actually an obscure reference or "joke." If you have futher questions, please PM me or another moderator. Thank you.

Oh, I'm sure you're so right. Her being at the speech has nothing to with her dead husband, but everything to do with some fluffy appointments on some corporate boards.

How hard is it to read a person's wiki page? It would save you the trouble of posting uninformed and possibly sexist stuff.

Here: In 1997, Powell Jobs and Carlos Watson co-founded College Track, a nonprofit organization in East Palo Alto with a mission of improving high school graduation, college enrollment, and college graduation rates for "under-resourced" communities--students of color and from low-income families.

She's done her share for the country and continues to do more.

So basically he probably would have been a lot less likely to have gotten banned if he put that news video in his post, right?

Yes. Even better would've been to have the statement be the link to the video. Opiate is right here. Play it safe with references, especially in emotionally charged threads like PoliGAF.

I knew what Kosmo was referring to, but that's because I've been emailed that totally-no-racial-undertones-video about 4x from my totally-not-racist Repub friends & co-workers over the last few months.

On a side note, Chris Christie is going to veto the approval of gay marriage in NJ if it makes it to his desk. His reasoning, its too big of a decision, it needs to be a constitutional amendement. I'm failing to see where in the NJ constitution marriage is distinguished as between a man and a woman

What bold leadership.

It might have nothing to do with Steve Jobs, she is active in various charity & women's issues.
Which I'm sure will be germane to the SOTU. Admittedly, I wasn't aware of her various professional achievements, but if she's mentioned at all I imagine it will be with respect to some lazy analogy about how America needs to be more like apple.

C'mon. I had to.
Baggins, you fucking racist. (tongue, cheek.)

Between this PPP look at Minnesota and the Gallup national tracker swing, I think my comment the other day about Newt's national momentum translating to state level success is probably coming true. I think much will depend on Florida. If Newt takes that state, then his momentum will carry over to other states even without the groundwork and money that Romney has put in. Romney is entering full-on panic mode.

Newtmentum baby!

lol, this is the best thing I've ever seen in politics. On one side you have Obama, the real deal, the genuine article. He is everyone's President. On the other, the self aggrandizing lobbyist, the shameless hypocrite that was run out of town on ethics charges, the poster boy for phony, slimy GOP politics.

You would think this would be impossible. I know the GOP has no sense of irony, but those fucking guys are too much with this one. I thought as it went along, there was no way he would be in the conversation in Florida.

Nah, no way it's gonna happen.

Speaking of which, I thought it was really odd that Newt, when taking about his accomplishments at the Florida debate, listed "working with a Democratic president" as one of them. He can't go two seconds in a debate without shifting the discussion towards how bad of a job he thinks Obama is doing.

What bold leadership.

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/...the-ballot-Christie-says.html?cmpid=124488459

As Democrats held a hearing this afternoon in Trenton on a gay marriage bill, Republican Gov. Christie held a press conference in Bridgewater with a surprise announcement: He wants the gay marriage question put on the November ballot as a proposed constitutional amendment.

Otherwise, he said, he will veto the Democrats' bill. Alternatively, a statewide referendum would be the most democratic way to make such a sweeping societal change, he said.

Such an unflattering picture.

Ah, I did not know that. Thanks for posting that, also gives a pretty good excuse to have her there ;)

Chris Christie said:
"It's bigger than just the word" marriage, he said. "It's hundreds of years of tradition, both legally, societally and religiously. And that's what I'm standing up for."
This is why the Oxford comma needs to be used.

Which I'm sure will be germane to the SOTU. Admittedly, I wasn't aware of her various professional achievements, but if she's mentioned at all I imagine it will be with respect to some lazy analogy about how America needs to be more like apple.

Oh they probably won't mind some implied connection to Steve Jobs. But they also might intentionally avoid mentioning him in view of the whole Chinese labor & jobs issue.

As I have long elucidated the principal impediments to success in Afghanistan, last night's debate magnified our country's misguided approach. Predictably, Mitt again propagated the conventional fallacy that expanding the Afghan military is the key to success in Afghanistan; a task that is becoming increasingly difficult as tensions exacerbate an already acrimonious relationship. But during his rather insipid answer, he completely ignored the existence of the Afghan government. This may be petty. But that really irked me.
The rush of some of you to label people racist or whatever is embarrassing. It just shows how conditioned you are. I once got called racist because I said Mrs. Obama was ugly.
I'd say blind is a more apt charge than racist; not that you can't be both, mind you.
Chuck Todd (on Morning Joe) had the same reaction as me to Mitt releasing his taxes today. They were tying to bury it in post-debate and SOTU coverage but they pretty much teed it up for Obama
Perhaps Romney was banking on that? Or was it a fortuitous development? Regardless, I imagine an attack by Obama would benefit him in the primaries. It may even compel the other candidates to defend him lest they appear as Obama acolytes.

Fuck the Oxford comma.
You have made a powerful grammatical enemy today!

But seriously, how would that help in this situation?

I think it implies that religion and society are an inseparable entity.

There are hundreds of years of tradition of marriage being between a man and woman. Both in law, and in socio-religion.

The "both" is IMO more important than the punctuation, however, the use of the comma reinforces his message that the two separate entities religion and society are bound together as one.

Byakuya769: Why can't she be the whole package: Caring citizen, philanthropist, widow of the highly praised Jobs, and overseer of a trust that holds the largest share of a very powerful media company?
