My biggest worry is that Nokia plans on this being their big phone for the whole year. This especially becomes my worry if it launches so late in the year.

Makes me worried we won't get a G3 device from them until next year because they are stuck in this weird cycle timeline wise. That means it'll probably pretty much be down to either a Samsung or HTC device again.

Nokia isn't on a yearly cycle. That's one of the points of the partnership. They already said last year that they'll release phones throughout the year.

For next year, though, Harlow said there will be a steady stream of releases — something that Microsoft badly needs as it tries to keep up with rivals, particularly Android devices, which are released on a constant basis.

1) It's like a step backwards to me for Nokia to a)be going all-in with a software platform they have no control over. b)choosing a platform that, I personally think, not even MS will actually be supporting after they hit their release for W8.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, why would MS not upgrade current phones to whatever phone version comes after W8 is released? Or even support them?

Remaining battery life: 90%
Estimated time remaining: 12 hours
Time since last charge: 1 hour

Something is very wrong with my battery...

Battery just dropped dead at 11:30am, I have not used my Focus since the post I made at 8:00am. I have two email accounts, one checking every half our and one checking once a day. I have WonderReader and WeatherLive running background agents and that's it, no other live tiles than the native OS tiles.

Boo. Ordering that battery tonight.

I don't disagree, but with the 710 out, the 800 coming soon, and then the 900 over the summer that could constitute throughout this year. Plus if we do get a new Nokia phone it might end up like the current lineup where stuff hits late 2012 in EU, but the US is stuck waiting.

You think "Operation Rolling Thunder" consists of two devices, the 900 and 710? I would have a hard time believing Nokia won't be releasing new phones on the low end (with Tango) as well as on the high end (with Apollo).

On another note, Murtazin: 'Nokia Lumia 910 will arrive in May, pack 12MP camera'. Some what backs up what Paul Thurott's rumors.

I could maybe see a Tango phone if Tango ever hits, and really exists anytime soon. I have no doubt we will get Apollo phones too, but it's just when and where.

Looks like Microsoft has officially done away with MIX and will replace it with something else at an unspecified date.

This is notable for Windows Phone because MIX has traditionally been a big show for Windows Phone (it is where we got the details on Mango).

This is notable for Windows Phone because MIX has traditionally been a big show for Windows Phone (it is where we got the details on Mango).

As part of that reflection, we have decided to merge MIX, our spring web conference for developers and designers, into our next major developer conference, which we will host sometime in the coming year.

[..]

Firstly, the notion that the “web community” is somehow separate and distinct from the community of developers we care about no longer makes any sense. Some had even called out the existence of a separate web event as proof that we don’t “get” the web… it’s a fair point… when we get developers together to talk about what we’re doing in the platform, the web discussion should be part and parcel to everything we talk about.

web technologies are a core part of Windows with WinRT so it makes sense to keep it all together.

My LG Optimus 7 crapped out with "storage card not detected" issues a week after its warranty expired. Not fun.
Had to pony up extra to get it sent in to Telus for repair/replacement.
Coping with an awful Blackberry loaner phone right now. You don't realize how dependent you are on WP7 convenience until it's gone. :(
Never big on people quoting their own posts but I was just shocked by the fact that Telus replaced my phone with a new unit in ONE WEEK.
Just picked it up before heading into work. I was expecting a turnaround time of 4-6 weeks.

I'm incredibly impressed and the service center accurately identified the issue with my old phone as well (faulty motherboard).

I think WP7 will have one last hoorah update this year, and then MS will move into Windows 8 for phones edition for their next "phone" os.

Nah. That's for the first 3 months.

I predict that they probably will release 2-3 more iterations of each class of phones throughout the year.

WP7 is already dead. Say hello to WP.

I was going by the link that said the 900 might not hit till June. That's wayyy beyond the 1st 3 months of the year. Heck if it's later in the month then half the year is already over.

That's an English retailer speculating. It will probably be the 910 that will hit Europe in may/june. Also it seems like they have removed it from their page.

We might know more after the next congress.

i believe the speculation that came out of that was that 910 was hitting in may. I'd assume most questions will be answered next month

Also Nokia financials in 2 days. Lets see if they want to give us any numbers...

While Denmark is a small Nokia country, the launch last week didn't match the iPhone launch. But it did sell 3 times as much as #2 phone last week at our largest carrier.

sheeeit i wanted to unlock my phone, but it appears that the tokens are sold out. I've been on the fence for so long and now that I've decided to finally do it, I can't :/

Introducing Windows Phone 8 home edition and professional edition.

I think this actually would be awesome fantasy, if one can buy a blank phone and install one own operating system like PC.

Imagine the choices if OEM, and small custom made to order phone.

I am hoping Windows Slate will move mobile and portable in that direction and away from all the carriers control bs.

I just received notification of an update on my HTC Trophy. Just curious as to whether or not anyone here happens to know what the update contains. I'm performing the update, anyway, but I suppose that I'm curious as to whether it's likely to only contain bug fixes or if it'll introduce any new functionality.

I got the same update not too long ago, it's a radio update IIRC.

I know my trophy lasts between 1 completely day [7am-midnight] or 1 1/2 days (charge the next day at noonish)

Did you change any settings to make it last that long? I mostly only use it to browse the internet on my bus ride to and from work and barely get a day out of it.

Sounds like a pretty unique feature. It's a shame you can't do it with other Android devices.

So your point is that all Android devices are more like Nexus devices then? Because I'm certainly not understanding your dig. Nexus devices have unlocked bootloaders, a feature other Android phones have adopted over time, Nexus devices also ship with Vanilla Android, something no other Android phone has adopted.

for the better i say. i mean virtual buttons? seriously? thats like the worst idea i ve heard of, let alone been put into practice. but i still gotta say even past the virual buttons aside, the vanilla theme for droids are pretty bad. i mean i they all look pretty bad. sony has the best one imho

but it looks so out of place just because there are so many out there. its hard to explain in words. but when i loook at all the diffrenet UI's for droid. i take one step back and say "i don't like any of these" i think its ok to give an OEM enough power to skin the UI how they want, but to completly retheme and re-tool the OS to their liking, is just giving them too much power. its basicly saying, "here we made this OS. install it on to your devices and do as you like." that kind of power should be given dicrectly to the user from the get go.

I guess I just don't get where you're coming from.

This is the entrance into smartphones, and for a variety of reasons they think WP7 is the best way to go about it.

I hope you are not serious. Nokia like invented the whole smartphone concept back in the day. With the Communicator you could manipulate MS office files and use internet in 1996! This "smartphone" term you are using is purely NA only invented by Apple PR.

well when you think about it. its true. nokia may of invented the smartphone. but apple invented "smartphones", and this is the new market. nokia tried to go it alone with meego. but that didn't work.

and they have their own reasons for choosing WP7 over droid. they may see it as an opportunity, or they may see the droid market as saturated.

Yes I'm being serious ... and you're being obtuse.

I'm well aware of Nokia's (and MS's) history here. As a matter of fact, I had a Nokia 'smartphone' as well as a Windows Mobile device in the past. Given my age, I actually lived threw the entire consumer cellular phone revolution ... let alone smartphones. Hell I had a pager when I was a teen.

Whether you like it or not, the 'smartphone' of today is a colloquialism with a very specific definition. It involves a large, capacitive touch-screen with an OS that's optimized for usage with fingers ... as well as an ecosystem with some sort of integrated marketplace for downloading apps and other content.

It's like arguing what a tablet means in today's market. Yes, we all know MS and others have had tablets out for years and years. That doesn't change the fact that 'tablet' has a pretty specific meaning today.

Yea, having access to the hardware you bought is a "unique" feature.

Software companies know best when it comes to hardware.

Good thing most companies that are leading the way with innovation are embracing unlockable bootloaders (sony, asus, htc).

Once you've had a phone without face buttons, you'll wonder why the hell other phones have these outdated button things. Seriously. No buttons is the future. Even the iPhone with the one button in front has one button too many.

It's not the same, really
I know.

How about no buttons, period? Software or hardware.

Their should be a mod for the GN that eliminates the software buttons and let you use N9 style gestures in replacement of them.

This is probably old, but has anyone else noticed if you shake the XBL screen with your avatar (not holding him) he'll fall to the ground and lay there. If you keep doing it he'll crack your screen and your phone will vibrate for a second. Pretty funny Easter egg.

Well, the sim card is back in my focus.

Now that I've got ICS on 2 tablets (touchpad and transformer prime), I needed a WP 7 fix. 3 devices with ICS seems like overkill..

Hurry up and release that Lumia 900 over here, Nokia.

I find your ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Actually, Matias Duarte is something of a fan of bezel gestures. There were limited bezel gestures in WebOS and he has some experimental ones in ICS as well. The ICS browser has a Labs option where you can hide the annoying top status/URL bar and instead use a left or right swipe and hold from the bezel to show browser navigation options. This gives you the whole screen for the page you're browsing except for the software buttons. I wouldn't mind if they made the browser entirely fullscreen and hide the software buttons as well and rely only on the bezel gestures.

You can never have too much glorious, luscious ICS goodness. I've got ICS on my Tuna and Touchpad and it's a wonderful thing to behold. I almost don't even remember what Android versions prior to ICS were like anymore.

Colleague asked me yesterday "You have a Windows Phone, right? I am going to wait for the Lumia 900, I am sick of my Phone!" [it is an old android, I think the Galaxy S]. He played around with my Omnia 7 and smiled the whole time because it is so "smoooth".
I told him about the storage problem and marketplace/game restrictions, but that does not seem to be a problem for him. Can't wait when he get's the phone in summer when it comes to Europe, I will check it out for sure.

Hello.

First, sorry for my poor English.

I live in Brazil and bought a phone windows 7, I would like to buy a few apps but Microsoft does not accept my credit card because I do not live in the U.S..

The paypal only works on the xbox, is there any way I can buy my apps for Windows Phone?

My Omnia 7 arrived \o/ managed to unbrand it, interop unlock it and get it all up to date. I have a weird issue though, when I click on the phone tile or 'Phone' in the app list it goes to load the dialing app then it autoquits so I can't dial any numbers :/

Calling works through the people tab and the Phone dialer used to work because I used it to install the Samsung Diagnosis app. Has anyone had anything similar or know how to fix it?
