The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

When iOS 5 was announced I thought I'd be able to stop worrying about Jailbreaking for the application DataDeposit. I was wrong. The piss poor implementation of "cloud" tech will be changed probably in 6, but for now, keep on Jailbreaking for DataDeposit, or deal with the crazy ways of backing up saves when not Jailbreaking...using desktop applications like iExplorer to backup each apps folder, or apps like iPhoneBackupExrractor on your backup files to do the same. It's time consuming as all hell when you start to get dozens and dozens of apps.

Thanks for the heads up just installed datadeposit and yeah its pretty ridiculous how insane how it is to backup saves or for that matter that saves are gone when u delete the app.

Puzzle Juice definitely needs an update. Every game I play, there's a glitch where two or more letters imprint over one block and I can't tell what letter it is. There's also a glitch where I'll put my finger very precisely over a block (playing on my iPad), and it'll register as touching the block above it. This happens for like 3x3 block radius, but all of the other blocks are fine. Frustrating when you're racing against time!

Also my high scores aren't showing up on the leaderboard and that makes me pouty.

Took myself 2 months, but finally beat kings cashing :D

Are you playing the game with wifi/3g turned off? I get the same problem with other games too when I play offline.

So what's this Tiny Tower hulabaloo? I saw it won best iOS game in the GAF awards. I looked it up and it doesn't seem that interesting. Am I missing something?

Well, you can try it because its free but its a game I never liked. It's terribly unbalanced and in needs of in-apps purchases to have any fun + it's wierd one some levels like actually rewarding you for not playing... (when you get back at the game after a while, they reward you with money and stuff, lol)

Sorry if posted already...

Remedy Ent.'s, makers of Max Payne and Alan Wake, iOS game "Death Rally" is free.

Downloading now...it says it has multiplayer

EDIT: game is pretty sweet. High production values. A bit of an IAPfest but worth the download

My girlfriend and I share one account and both downloaded Triple Town. When I buy unlimited turns, will the IAP be available on her iPhone as well?

Was that two months of constant playing? I played it for a good week or two and managed to finish it (though I haven't come anywhere near getting the top prizes on the skill test areas). Lots of late nights on that one, though.

If you can take a game mechanic and apply a style to it that's never been done before, and do it well... you'll have my money. Dungeon Raid, Sequence, Kings Cashing... all addictive as hell.

After a few days of playing Hero Academy, I must say I really like it, but I also feel that the learning curve is very hard. This is enhanced by the fact that there's no option to play against an AI opponent. Any tips for Hero Academy noobs?

Nope, always online, usually WiFi when I play.

Also I'd like it if the tutorial explained the scoring/multiplier system. I still don't have very much strategy aside from OH GOD DON'T DIE. I just finished playing what I thought was my longest game ever, yet only got 4,000,000 or so points.

If dark elf, if you have a nurtured wraith you win

If others, if you have a ninja you win

Seems to be about it

I did not know this. Holy shit. So when you upgrade you handset, if you are an iPhone user, you have to rebuy IAPs?!

They are ACCOUNT specific, not device specific. Sign into the same account on the other device, attempt to re-buy the IAP and you won't be charged twice. (and if you are, Apple will refund you)

I have bought unlimited turns for Triple Town on my IPad and then just clicked "Restore unlimited Turns" in the Game. Now i have unlimited turns on both devices but on the Iphone i'm prompted to enter my Itunes account password every time i play the game.

Oh right. So the dude's wrong. That's more like it. :)

Lame. Is this just your problem?

Are there any complete games without IAP that make good use of the iPhone 4S hardware?
I've had the 4S since day one, but haven't tried anything with fancy graphics.

Infinity Blade 2 and Real Racing 2 are loaded with IAP consumables. I don't trust games designed around selling extra coins.

I don't even like GTA3 with a real controller, but I might give it a look. :)

You wont need IAPs to finish Real Racing 2, unless you are a Real Retard

Hhhhnnnggggggg I just bought Game Dev Story last night and I played it so much my eyes hurt from looking at a tiny screen all night and then I passed out slept through my entire day (what a waste @_@) beat it when I woke up and now I have a headache, my eyes feel weird and I'm searching for more games by Kairosoft even though I have to be up at 7am tomorrow but I want moarrrr.

Probably spent more time on that one game than I have in the history of all my iPhone games together, so addictive.

Regardless, I don't want any games with consumable DLC.
What consumables does RR2 have? You can just buy the cars and parts with real money on top of game money. They just have you buy virtual money to add to your already earned amount because obviously a car unlock shouldn't cost $200,000 in real money. But you shouldn't cos it's essentially cheating and the pacing of the game is just fine playing it normally and buying what you can when you can. It wouldn't even be *good* cheating since even if you buy some super car you won't be able to use it in the early races since they have specification requirements. RR2 is one of the few meaty games on iOS, you're missing out not getting it just for that reason. Or did I completely miss buying nitros or whatever that you use up then have to refill?

Dat kairosoft feeling

Guys, everyone go download Saving Yello. Let me know what you think. It is an Angry Birds style physics puzzle game but the level design and power ups are amazing. I won't spoil what the animal is... lol

I'm pretty sure this is everyone's first experience with that game =)

Kairosoft games rarely have any replay value, but main that ~5 hours it takes to beat them... it's pretty horrifying stuff.

So new games wednesday. From browsing down the list of stuff, Paper Monsters and Baseball Superstars 2012 might be the one's I pick up tonight.

Don't know if the game is any fun or any good, but at least it looks nice:

Exitium: saviors of Varadonia is free today! (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/exitium-saviors-of-vardonia/id449821149?mt=8)

Do yourself a favor and pick up crimsonheart. Best action krpg. period.

Thanks for the King Cashing recommendation, I almost missed it! :) Great little game!

I regard in game currency to progress quickly as a consumable.
I'm glad people enjoy the game, and I'm glad that for the most part it isn't designed around that, but I'm giving it a miss.

After games like Flick Pig, Wind Up Knight and Infinity Blade, I'm much happier to only buy games without this crutch.

The implication that paying extra money progresses the game more quickly.
Even if it's 'not required', it's still part of the game design.
How's that a crutch?

Though I never even said that's how RR2 is. I'm not good with racing games and never had to buy anything with real money and could always get and upgrade a car appropriate for the given race requirements etc when taking the tournaments in order.

If you want to assume that you'll either have to grind or pay that's your deal but that's all it is, an assumption.

And mentioning other games that aren't RR2 has nothing to do with RR2.

I pretty much agree with you. It's a temptation I'd rather wasn't there. I'd much rather pay a flat fee for a game and be done with it. That being said, it seems clear to me you're wasting your time in this thread with that sort of talk. I've seen you and others (probably myself included) make similar comments and it's usually met with zealous defense. Some folks are cool with IAP, some folks aren't. No one's opinion is going to change until it affects them personally. I think a lot of what goes on (with companies like Glu, for instance) feels a bit too much like a scam, but other publishers seem to be more sensible about it. Again, though, I'd rather it wasn't there. Shit, I'm not the biggest fan of paid DLC, but whatever...it's just one of those arguments that seems to go nowhere.

And on that note...

Buddy Rush is a pretty fun fucking little portable MMO. Haven't gotten far enough into it yet to figure out if they're going to try to bend me over for some IAP, but it's fun so far.

GeekyDad, you could be right.
It's totally fine for people to enjoy those games.
It's a waste of time to argue the topic though.

If I asked for a game without tilt control, or one without a virtual d-pad, that would be okay, but if I get ask for a game without IAP the defence force trots out.

As for Buddy Rush, the pressure to enlist others via Facebook is what made me drop that game. It's a pleasant enough romp, but I'm not selling my friends into a ponzi scheme.

All Korean RPGs have the same issue where they are some of the best looking iOS games but man they are just like fucking a hole in the dirt. Blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I hate them because they're all the same, random battles suck balls, the stories suck balls, the characters are stupid and they get grindy and repetitive.

So I guess that's a skip.

I hate "in apps purchases", but I'm always trying to stay objective as much as possible. Here's how I deal with it:

Imagine the game wouldn't have those IAPs, would it be enjoyable? Would it be worth your price entry? If the answer is "yes", you shouldn't be minding them. If some people want to buy stuff (almost cheat here) it's their business. Why would you ruin your fun with it? Id the game is well done, it's the IAP buyers that are ruining their gameplay, not you.

Now I know there's alot of games out there that ARE shit if you don't buy anything. They purposedly ruin the rythm of play, block you or make you wait for no God damned reasons just so you're buying stuff. Those games are simply bad games, that's all. I judge them the same way as all other games with IAPs: If the game was made like that and with no IAPs options, would it be a good game? yes/no.

Then you're playing on the wrong platform then. But I will tell you this - in the year plus that I've been playing lots and lots of ops games, I've maybe bought three things as IAP, and they were all extra content, not coins.

Honestly your position is baffling. You're missing out on so many great experiences because what? To make a point when no dev is going to listen to you? It's cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Edit: basically, if you feel you're being scammed then don't spend money. But I've never encountered a game where I need to pay to progress. Extra content is just fine though, if I want more (like in groove coaster) then I'm happy to pay a pittance for extra.

IAPs are doodoo and if a game is designed as a sludge trog in order to make you want to buy those IAPs then the game is doodoo. Not much mystery involved.
