Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

Not open for further replies.
The dedicated server software was added to the registry. Looks like we'll be able to set up our own dedicated servers soon.

Could it be a sign of the open beta starting soon?

Ugh.

What kind of Sand King goes Scepter BEFORE Blink Dagger.

We kind of badly need it considering they got TornadoKer on their team and we can't let Antimage reach endgame AHHHHGHAGHAGHA,

Just cost us a game aaahhghaghaghaghghahha.

Fuck that one made me bitter.

Speaking of which I'm now totally onboard the Ban Invoker train. Tornado is stretching the limits of acceptability, but EMP? It would alleviate a bit if they didn't make both spells heavily-Wex so you couldn't get them on the same build...but ah well, I'll figure something out eventually.

For the new page:

Is there an easy way to get in-game replays of the matches between the big teams (SK, Navi, etc.) that get casted or are there only VODs of the broadcast of the games?

They're private games, so VODs only unless Valve hosts them specifically.

Yeah, tornado+EMP is a killer combo...

What I don't understand is that have things always been OP like this? Or is it only OP cause we're missing other heroes and on the grand scale of things it's still balanced?

Tornado + EMP has always been OP. But it's really easily countered. I mean, is arcane boots that big a deal?

I just had this game that we won, with an English-speaking Riki insisting that he go mid because he "won paper, rock, scissors" with his 2 friends on our team. We still won, but the whole time Riki was telling me how terrible I was as Shadow Fiend. I finally just told him "You insisted on soloing mid as Riki, diving into their towers going "hahaha, you can't see me" and letting them kill you, got Earthshaker killed a few times, and you tell me I'm bad?" Then he just keeps repeating "u mad" the rest of the game (it was about over at that point, we were attacking their ancient).

Mute! Works wonders

How do I Naix?

I'm so bad.

I probably won't be the best person to answer that, but I personally like to put one on feast for survivability. If attempting first blood, then open wounds is first skilled. Max rage, if you are getting harassed alot, get more on feast then open wounds.

With rage, you can nullify missle spells easily. Infest is not to be spammed due to the longer cooldown; use it for surprising enemies (You can infest pretty much anything, including Beastmaster's bird), regenerating a quick HP, nuking in AOE to make sure you kill him, etc.

jungle, midas -> threads -> armlet
DO NOT LEVEL UP ANYSPELL BEFORE DOING ANYTHING (what people need to do with most of the heroes that ppl don't do)
If your gonna lvl 1 gank get open wound
if not just get feast
Get 1 lvl of rage and max out the rest first
get infest at 6 - 11 - 16
Abuse infest with people escaping abilities ( Furion's tp, Slardar's speed, Riki invis, Brood's invis, beastmaster's owl, etc.)
Then you get deso, AC, divine ( doesn't really matter, i like getting deso for the armor debuff)

ps: if your getting midas, don't forget to spam the shit out of that spell and target the weakest unit possible you'll get 190 gold no mater what even if its a spiderling.

edit: carry tps, and try to rage/tp to escape

It means he cant drain you to 0 though. If you are up against EMP Invoker you should have at least 2 set of mana boots.

Yes, he can. The boots cost 25 Mana to use, which can leave you without mana for a good 15 seconds if you don't have a magic stick. So you need both Arcande Boots and a Magic Stick.

Midas also gives 150% experience from the unit that's killed, so if you want fast levels use it on the big creeps, if you want lots of farm use it on the little ones.

Aha, thanks.

I actually didn't realize you could infest BM's bird. Makes sense, though. Only enemy heroes are immune, right?

Max out feast and open wounds before rage? OW I can understand, as it's good for burst lifesteal, and ganking, but I thought it'd be more useful to max rage before that three extra percentage points (beyond the first four) of lifesteal from feast. I read a guide that said the same as you, but it seems... wrong? Not that I think I know better, by any means.

Midas, huh? Huhhh. Hmmm. I can try that. It might help with me feeling relatively underfarmed. Although this last game I was horrible about helping the solo lane with ganks, so I was lower on gold than usual. Also I got stunlocked from full health to nothing several times. They'd just wait for my rage to end and then chain stun me. Clicking my ult on a nearby creep as fast as I possibly could. Died anyway. Everytime.

I am focusing on jungling, though. I've finally learned where all the different camps are (in dire, at least, since that seems to be where I always end up when I play Naix), and also use the quelling blade to fight one creep at a time for a bit of a safety net by digging through the trees in certain spots. But I still feel like I'm not going as fast as I can, or something. Thus far, I generally farm up power treads, TP to the fountain to heal and gain mana, and then never go back again unless a fight leaves me exceptionally low on mana.

So he has to drain multiple boot wearers to less than 25 mp and have them not have magic wands. This seems likely.

i usually don't do the trip after you get the treads cause i get a midas and i can kill creeps slightly faster ( 30+ atkspeed ) and when i get lvl 6 i'm usually low hp so i just infest a creep and get back to full heath, or just pull to not tank the creeps

Ahhh it's true I always forget about infest while jungling!

Will it instantly kill a big creep? O: EDIT: I'm assuming you can't use it on the magic-immune clay golem things, right?

yes it will and will give you same amout of hp they had when you "uninfest" or w.e.

Never tryed on golem but i suppose you can't do it on them
i usually do it on the ursa camp cause they got so much hp :)

don't forget that it does a nice aoe damage too

You know, thinking about it, Tinker really has a lot of flexibly on how to build him once you get BoT and a good mana supply. I want to try a gimick healing Tinker of teleporting next to a hurt ally, and spamming Mek.

Problem is the mek buff doesn't allow the heal to apply again.

What would you suggest as a starting items for jungler N'aix? I found 2 sets, not sure if they any good:
- Stout Shield and a Ring of Protection;
- Stout Shield and a Quelling Blade.

I hope Icefrog keeps up the trend of making the basic items build into more then a single item. Ring of Protection is a nice little Armor item, but the biggest problem is that it only builds into Ring of Basilius and Tranquil Boots, both items have some minor draw backs to (Ring of Basilius gives less mana to you then a Sage Mask by its self mid to late game, Tranquil boots loose the armor buff after a few hits)

Personally I think laning naix with some hero like dazzle or lich is far superior than jungling naix.

As good as deso is on naix, I personally think ias items are better because feast is independent of damage. So the only way for feast to improve is higher attack speed. Armlet, AC, mjonir, midas, all good items. Because naix has really no chase other than the open wounds, getting cranium basher is a good idea (now that it can be upgraded)

Dunno if this will interest anyone, but for a while I have been randoming heroes and I refuse to stick to my two most used heroes (unless I random Riki or Drow of course).

So far I've randomed 21 times and I've gotten

Blood Seeker-2
Windrunner-3
Life Stealer-1
Tiny-1
Pudge-1
Spectre-2
Bat Rider-1
Kunnka-1
Morphling-1
Warlock-1
Ursa-1
Sand King-1
Shadow Shaman-1
Huskar-1
Enchantress-1
Witch Doctor-1
Lion-1

I've won 11 matches so far and I am having so much fun. It's nice to get a random character you've never played and get to play a different role in the team than you're used to. What really sucks is when I get stuck with a Hero I have no idea about and my team suffers for it. Don't know if some of you might hate if someone on your team does that, but until I get a better handle on every hero, some unfortunate souls will have to put up with me ;_;

So far my favorites are Windrunner, Sand King, Ursa, Life Stealer, Shadow Shaman, and Bat Rider.

The ones I hate with a passion are Pudge, Lion, Morphling, Spectre, and Tiny.

Hope to keep this random games going till I get to play every Hero.

I wouldn't read that, he likes LoL because it's easier.

Except he actually makes some good points (even if I don't agree with them).

But then he also says some really stupid shit that has no place in a logical argument. I am specifically referring to this gem.

League also turns the line-of-sight differences provided by elevation in DotA into a series of bushes that can't be seen into or beyond. It's a change that both provides some interesting tactical depth -- allowing players to hide for an ambush -- and makes more sense to a newcomer at a glance (hiding in brush strikes me as a little less out-there than not being able to see up some stairs). It also serves as a unique means of triggering abilities, such as Nidalee's passive skill, that Dota 2's different heights simply doesn't allow for. League of Legends' brush is elegant and instantly recognizable as a usable part of the environment, while the subtlety of Dota 2's different heights means you may not get the hang of it for many games.

The bolded especially is... patently untrue. If someone wanted to make a hero whose abilities were triggered or modified by relative height to other heroes, they could easily do so. Choosing not to do so doesn't suddenly make it impossible. (And I wouldn't be surprised to learn such a hero exists, but I don't know about them, yet. After all, Nightstalker exists. League has no day/night cycle. Oh no League has no characters that can take advantage of something like this!)

Moving 15% faster though bushes is certainly more fun then being able to fly around and go over all terrain.

This line is the one that I find the most true:

That said, Dota 2 also suffers from the occasional must-have item

There are quiet a few heroes who are balanced around having a certain item. Most Initiators need a Blink Dagger, Tinker needs Boots of Travail, there are some Heroes who aren't even allowed to buy Blink Dagger, ect ect. Better then Riot balancing around Runes though.

Valve is building a really great adaptation of the decade-old rule set, but it's still a decade-old rule set.

Bwhahahaha.

Denying vs. Harassing

I like what denying adds to the game, but there's certainly nothing wrong with preferring a game that takes focus away from that and adds more focus to harassing. Like I said, a fair point, but not one I agree with (mostly because I think Dota inherently has a more exciting laning phase in general, thanks in no small part to the way death punishes you by making you lose gold).

so glad axe and spirit breaker are back in town. they may be pub stomping comfort food but i'll be damned if my motivation to play hasn't shot up since they made their debut.

had a hell of a couple games today as good ol sb, first winning a 3v5 and then following it up with a gankfest where i tp'd out of danger more times than should be legal. this included a boneheaded dive waaay into the enemy base past a bunch of towers where i ended up at their ancient with the entire enemy team up.

got the kill and escaped
