Halo 4 Announced (MS Conf, 2012, Start Of New Trilogy)

Halo 3 remained the "chief" of XBL up to Modern Warfare 2, and that's where Call of Duty exploded, hastily gaining on Halo.

Im pretty sure Halo 3 traded the top spot with MW2 and even took the top spot back for a pretty long period? Pretty impressive given how late into Halo 3's life MW2 came out. I blame Halo's popularity issues with the fact that I feel Reach dropped the ball on the series. I also think ODST and Halo Wars hurt the Halo franchise with the average mass market gamer which is a shame because I loved those 2 games. I can understand why uninformed people who get those games and leave a bit annoyed, but I think Halo Wars was fantastic, same with ODST.

Why not exactly? The story was pretty good (with the final scenes being amazing) and it was a pretty fun game.

(Also Halo started out as a RTS btw)

And turned into a first-person shooter wonder.

I played Halo Wars, and was fond of it, but I started looking differently at Halo following its release.

Has X12 been dated yet? (hoping it's earlier in February rather than later) Maybe we'll finally get some Halo 4 stuff around then.

Irrefutable evidence here guys, don't even try.

I mean, look at all that... evidence... being presented.

The game smashed into 25 million unique players online, less than six months following its release. It carried on to turn into the best-selling Xbox 360 game of all time, best-selling game of all time in the UK and in the U.S., and was the chart-topping game on XBL in 2010.

Black Ops subsequently took the franchise to a wholly distinct level.

What does that have to do with halo? Just because COD became much more popular doesn't mean it's the reason for halos drop off in sales.

The explosion of COD didn't really make halo 3s playing numbers drop at all and the game continued to have really strong legs. I think the decrease in popularity was because the game between main games was too big and when it finally came out there was no chief.

For many people (including myself) reach still felt like sort of a spin off because it didn't have the chief. Bungie/Ms should have realised how important he was to the franchise.

The X0 events haven't been what you're thinking since X06. Ever since then, they've just been Xbox parties around GDC time to let the press play some upcoming games.

Last year's X event was the best, for obvious reasons. :P

Man the weekly update was so disappointing. I really wish that 343 would have made it crystal clear before the toy fair that there would be no Halo 4 news. It felt like they waited till the last day then said don't expect anything.

Halo 3 had 1 million daily [unique] gamers before the release of MW2. Such numbers were never heard of again.

In what way is Master Chief associated with the diminishing of Halo's popularity online?

Exactly.

Halo Reach wasn't where the series started to lose popularity: The period between Halo 3/Halo Wars/ODST is when they lost the title.

Truth be told Halo was never the most accessible shooter in the world but Halo 3 made things a lot worse with less magnetism, bad map design (Construct...lol), and taking forever to get in matches only to have like half of them quit.

I'm really good at Halo and 3 was just really hard to get into. Unbearably difficult for new players and even a lot of the old Pros disliked it quite a bit. When MW2 came out a lot of people ran for the hills.

Between the Halo anime, ODST , Halo Wars and the Halo XBL App the milking really soured a lot of people.

Reach did a lot to help matters but it was just...all over the place and they still didn't fix the accessibility issue.

I liked Halo Wars alot. Halo 3's story and Reach's boring campaign were the low points for the franchise for me. I don't play a whole lot of multiplayer, so I'm not really qualified enough to talk about that. I'm just a Captain in Reach, heh.

New trilogy for the xbox 360? This can't be right. Well i guess they can't say "new trilogy for the xbox family of products". I guess that would be too obvious.

I'm surprised people rank Halo 3's campaign over Reach. Brutes are just awful enemies in general and virtually every weapon in that game was worst than it's counter-part from another game. Really terrible pellet gun sounding AR, BR added spread, terrible pistol even compared to the halo 2 magnum...it was just not a high point in the series in any way--multiplayer or campaign.

That was very evident in the MP for me. Almost every weapon that wasn't a power weapon felt janky and worthless.

I like the way Halo 4 handles all these completely disparate, contradictory and unrelated complaints.

I am Tom Morello.

PEACE!

On an unrelated note, I really hope we get Custom Game Browsing and Dedicated Servers for Halo 4.

I reckon Halo 3 would be much more active now if it had them from the beginning as they allow communities to build as you'll get people becoming server 'regulars', thus forming long term friendships within the game. In general they'd provide a much more user friendly experience for newcomers as well, providing betrayers and trash talkers can be kicked by hosts. I think they'd also be magnificent for the competitive and creative communities, Custom Game Browsing would allow good forge maps to spread like wildfire. For the competitive community, dedicated servers would be much more useful for hosting scrims, as well as handling general clan recruitment.

Overall, there's no other two features that I think could massively benefit the Halo multiplayer experience as much as these, I've expanded much further on this over at Halo Waypoint so if anyone would like to take a look then feel free!

Your neck looks weird and that shirt makes you look fat.

:lol

The lack of Halo 4 news seems to have caused everybody, even 343 to go a little crazy.

ODST did a lot of harm, and Reach didn't really help.

I'm glad Bungie is out.

ODST was great, just unfortunately a lot of people didn't really understand what the game was. Mix that with the price and it caused a lot of frustration. Personally, I knew completely what the game was going to be and loved it.

ODST was great, it should never have been fully priced though. I think that's why Halo lost a lot of the casual crowd. When the average consumer was weighing it up against MW2 it was clear that they were going to get a lot more out of the latter.

What's between now and E3? Seems a bit too late to reveal the game at E3, so before that would be logical.

Would be awesome if next friday or so, a massive reveal on all gaming sites out of nowhere.

Please don't announce Halo 5 until you are certain you will have gameplay to show within 1 month. Making us wait an entire year for something is cruel.

edit- "news" better not be a vague text preview on ign man :@
