Show us your gaming setup: 2012 Edition

How the fuck are we on the 18th page already? January isn't even over yet. I like this trend.

Anyway, the only "must-have" would be Billy bookcases.

Anyone do in-built shelving for their AV setup? thinking about doing something like that myself.

I currently have this going on:

ieNrl.jpg

That's a 50" Panasonic plasma, on a stand that's slightly too small for it. :)
The two pseudo-pillars on either side of the current stand would provide a perfect frame for a little custom shelf action, so I'm looking for inspirations.

This may not be the right thread for it, but considering some of you have printed video game/music/movie artwork on your walls it seems like the best fit. I'm currently in the process of sprucing up my second bedroom a bit and I want to put up some framed music album artwork. Does anyone know what would be the minimum image resolution to get a decent quality print at about 40x40 or 50x50cm?

It's not about minimum resolution, really. It's PPI you've gotta be on the lookout for. As for the actual number you should be looking for... honestly, I'm not sure. But you really, really need something with a high number. If it looks anything but razor sharp on your computer monitor, it's probably not going to look great, even at that size.

And for the dude who asked about built-in shelving... personally, I'm not a fan. It's too limiting if you ever upgrade, and when you run out of space on the shelves... you'll be more than a little miffed.

Nice clean setup. Your cable management is great other than that one stray going to your right speaker. Damn OCD.

Yeah, it's too short to do anything with, that'll have to wait till I change cables.
I'm in no rush to do that though, it's not so cheap and there are higher priorities, it would be nice to have a completely clean setup though :-)

Speaking of cool white speakers, I saw these in a shop this weekend:

DALIFAZONF5HGWH_1.jpg

They looked even cooler in real life. They're called DALI FAZON F5, if anyone's interested.

I kinda figured that the DPI would matter. It's also ridiculously hard to find very high res album art out there sadly. :(

They are as expensive as they look.

i'm with the other guy who said that build-in shelving is a headache. my parents did an entire wall in their library. I think it looks horrible. You can hold a lot of books and various other things, but it was, for instance, designed originally around a specific tv. well that was 2 decades ago when I was a little kid, and they haven't had a tv in that spot for like 80 percent of that time, and it looks retarded. built-in shelving also isn't ideal for electronics due to air-flow issues. and, ideally (and i'm guilty of this anyway), speakers should be on stands or freestanding rather than on a shelf.

also, some people have been commenting on the billy bookcase, but I've never really liked it. What I do like is the bookcase you have in the above picture in the background. I've got a couple of those in different sizes in my living room/entertainment area for holding books and videogames, and I have no regrets choosing them over traditional bookcases. the blocks aren't very wide, so it probably isn't ideal for using for electronics though unless you put the larger electronics on top. still, thumbs up on the bookcase. your speaker placement is also quite "original".

On a semi-related note, whathifi gave the Dali entry level 5.1 set 5 stars out of 5. It's one of the options I'm going to listen to when I'm going out for a new set.

Yeah, the biggest problem is that the people who design and install these sorts of abominations know nothing about home theater, at all. My parents have a couple of these sorts of things, and they've limited the ability to or made it impossible to use a center speaker, and seriously hampered what they can use in terms of receivers.

My new amp, which is just kinda chilling until I can hook it up when I get my new speakers, is about 75lbs and almost 2 feet deep. That will not work with any built-in piece of shit. Ever. So I'm not big on 'em.

Where did you get that side cabinet with the iPad on it? It looks like an Ikea Akurum only repurposed. The reason I ask is because it resembles the Muurame storage Chittagong had throughout his home, and those are not available in America...

It's Ikea Besta Bench with custom leg selection - http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S99888844/#/S39888837

The great thing about it, is it probably costs 1/5th of the Muurame furniture and still looks pretty darn good.

My set up, not as awesome as some peoples around here and needs abit of sorting out and a decent sound set up, but I like it.

Heres my setup. PS3 and PC hooked into an AV receiver with 7 sweet channels of sound! I use the projector for 3D gaming (Witcher 2 being particularly outstanding).

How are you guys wiring your speakers if you have an open floor plan? I wanna get some speakers behind the couch, but it's in the middle of the room and I don't want wires running across the floor.

Either go under the floor, or look for a wireless solution. Downside with wireless ones is you will get noise and even though they are wireless, they usually require a power source in or near the rear channels.

Making a trip to IKEA in the next couple weeks to furnish my newish house.

What would anyone highly suggest I grab from there? I already have 2 POANG chairs and footstools for my living room and basement/rec room, but I'm not sure what else are musts.

I've got some ideas in mind, but would love any recommendations that people feel strongly about!

I would recommend you grab the Expedit shelf and take a look the Besta series. The TV stand is very nice.

I will be posting pics soon...

Here is how it has looked for the past 2 years (only pic I could find was from Christmas 2010...not much changed at all).

Plok! That's awesome.

You should really look into properly adjusting that LCD, though. You're stretching the image big time!

I bought this wireless kit from Best Buy. I have an electrical outlet next to the couch, so I stuck the rear speaker receiver under the couch and I just leave it powered on. I'll try to take some pics this weekend.

It sounds good enough for me. It's not like there's a ton of stuff coming from the surrounds anyway.

I figured it was a pricey cable based on the thickness and your attention to detail everywhere else.

I had to print a lot of presentation material for school and we always used 150 DPI as a starting point for anything you wanted to look nice.

I have some album art at 300 DPI so I'll probably end up taking a usb stick filled with various artwork to a local copy shop and ask them for advice/opinions. Worst comes to worst I'll bring some of my records along so they can scan and print the covers. I've purchased some album frames, but I really don't want to put my actual albums in them. Too much of a hassle to get them out when I want to give them a spin.

300 DPI should be more than enough. I like the idea of just printing the artwork instead of framing the record. How did I not think of that sooner. I wonder if there is a good online repository. I love the look of vinyl albums but I have no desire to own any at this point in my life.

Going through this thread I'm really getting into the mood to build myself a retro shrine as well, I have plenty of stuff laying on the attic in cardboard boxes.

Does anyknow know of a manufacturar that still produces CRT television with modern specifications (hdmi in)?

whats the big ass thingy?

That's a Booster Boy, you removed the front panel to slot in an original Gameboy. What it gave you was stereo sound via it's speakers, a foldable built in light magnifier, larger A/B buttons, a mini analog stick attachment, a small compartment to store a link cable and if I recall correctly it also let you use D batteries to power the Gameboy as well.

Lol, that booster boy thing is amazing. Funny that not too long ago that was a viable device and today people consider things like the Vita too large.

Lovely set up, Bradach. I've just today received my new Epson EH-TW3200 projector that I can't wait to use for all my gaming. All the cables arrive tomorrow. I had a question. At the moment I am going to be projecting the image on a near-white wall, but I intend to buy a screen in the future. Do you have any advice regarding what type of screen to buy? Yours looks like a nice size. Cheers.

Thanks Woundedbear. I looked into proper projector screens at the time I got the projector but decided to try a cheaper alternative first and it works perfect. That's actually a white black-out blind for a window. I picked it up at a curtain shop for €25. It's very light so I just hang it from two clips in the ceiling when gaming. It's not perfect because there's a couple of slight creases at the side but I don't notice it at all while gaming

Very resourceful, good skills! I was trying to think of an alternative approach myself and that seems like just the ticket.

So you're using 1 receiver for the front speakers and one for the back, or does the Rocket Fish thing act as the rear receiver? I also have outlets on the floor next to the couch in the middle of the room so that may work. Appreciate the pics when you get them up, thanks dude.

That's saintly.

Sorry for quoting this picture yet again, but I'm sure nobody minds :)

donkamio: Something I find extremely interesting is how you have the wall tiled in your living room.
I don't think I've ever seen it done as you have it.
Was it a deliberate choice of yours or something already already present when you moved in?
It gives me plenty of ideas!
