Halo 4 Announced (MS Conf, 2012, Start Of New Trilogy)

Because they weren't expecting it.
People were expecting Halo 2 to be the Chief fighting the Covenant on Earth.
It was mis-managed, people felt the game was a bait & switch so that blowback blew on to the Arbiter too.

Also, the introductory Arbiter scene, in the mausoleum is (awesome,) very long and the impression I get is that a lot of people non-interested in the Universe other than the Chief, didn't really care, so allowed themselves no connection to the character.

That & people generally prefer to be Human characters. Us vs them mentality.

I didn't dislike the Arbiter as a character, I actually preferred him over the chief at that time. But I really disliked the levels you played as the Arbiter. I hated the first four Arbiter levels, mostly because you were fighting the flood most of the time and the levels were really dark.

I think that's why the general public disliked the Arbiter. They associated him with the dark flood levels which the general public doesn't like either (I think).

I don't find it baffling necessarily; people like stoic, badass heroes. But I can't relate to it, as the Arbiter's character was not only more interesting, but he went through an actual character arc. It was such great story telling.

I'm hoping 343 is as brave with their stories as Bungie was in Halo 2. I think the backlash made them shy of being daring in that department again, which was quite a loss.

I guess I can see that.

I agree that Bungie seemed to shy away narratively after Halo 2, which was a damn shame.

That would be troll overload, even by my standards.
I wonder which date makes the most sense. It could be a small tease with a week before e3 anticipating a reveal. That would also be trollish. Can you tell us if it will be a full reveal what we'll see before e3?

Halo 4 news two days before E3 confirmed.

I laughed way too hard at this. Probably because it's true.

:(

Hadn't Edge Magazine already featured a cover for Halo:Reach this time two years ago? I do know that we got a trailer for Reach in late 2009, the year before release. It's so unfortunate that this isn't the case for Halo 4.
Yup, the trailer and a screen was out late 2009, the press got to see it early december (I know cause I was one of them that went to visit Bungie) and the embargo for content was 25th January 2010. So yes, we are way behind on info this time around with Halo 4.

Here is the article I wrote from my visit at Bungie to get a grip of how much we got to see: Halo: Reach article

I'm spontaneously saying AA. Taking into account that they play their cards right, there is a possibility that we are speaking of an AAA title.

Not sure if it's OK to bring this up, but I heard Ryan Payton had left 343i a year before making the announcement. What's the full story?

After reading Primordium, I am really hyped about the possibilities in Halo 4. It'll probably won't live up to my expectations set up by the book, but oh well.

Yes, people seem to think it's about scores though.

yep. its the status/priority that the game has at the publisher. ms was hiring some of the best developers in the industry, created a new studio and gave them a pretty long development cycle. so its clearly a AAA game for ms.

It's a quadruple A game for me.

I remember when this was posted and the google translate fun that was had. Good times.

Indeed, but all that makes me think that we must get some real information really soon, or something has happened. If Halo 4 really is coming in September, it's time to speed things up.

Yup. We've all been wondering about the hold up. I think just about everyone expected the see the game at this point and 343 are keeping quiet so all we can do is wait and guess.

My money is on a February reveal, no later than March. The press will most likely get something next month and have it sealed behind the infamous NDA wall.

Halo 4 was really low on the Gametrailers 'most anticipated' list because it's a 'non entity'. It's clear that the silence is now hurting the series, I wouldn't be surprised if Halo 4 sales forecasts are cut by three quarters by tomorrow morning as a result of such secrecy.

All is well however, 343i wouldn't let this happen I'm sure. In an effort to combat this threat to the series I fully expect to see a media blowout within the hour.

Halo 4 wont be out in november due to Call of Duty. That would be absolutely madness, especially since Microsoft usually have exclusive deals for DLC with Activision. Trying to make it sell less on the Xbox 360 is a lose/lose for both of them.

Is it witless of me to claim that Halo "died" with Bungie?

I'd say mainstream popularity of Halo died with ODST, it was a grievous mistake to fully price it, especially when it was releasing so closely to MW2.

I think there's a very good shot of Halo 4 restoring a lot of HP to the series though, my reasoning being.

+ Three Years development time
+ New Team, new Ideas.
+ Another heavily modified engine, against what will presumably be the same CoD engine.

Also lot of CoD players really disliked MW3, I think this is the beginning of the series getting truly tired, even with the fan-base. Halo 4 can really take advantage of this and really make the next CoD look bad.
