Mirai Nikki 16
Probably the worst German I've heard in my entire life. A lot of bad art and lousy animation in this episode outside of some good faces. When Yuno gets that that look it still puts a smile on my face. Outside of that, this episode was pretty middling. Is Yuki suddenly an eight year old in a 90's romcom? Why does he want his divorced parents to get remarried? Episodes do feel shorter with Murmur junk on the end, so it sucks that it came back when the show should be shifting into gear to finish this thing out.

I'm gonna check out Pirates next and see if all this talk of it being boring is unwarranted or not. It has Hnnnnngzawa in it. how can it be boring?

Do you like Star Trek, or more realistic depictions of future spaceflight, except with an anime theme here instead of Western?

If you do, it won't be, not in the least!

I guess that's pretty much the point. You need a little geek heart for Pirates.
Star Trek's an amazing franchise, "people who like Star Trek" is a plenty large audience... I guess not enough people in this thread like both Trek and anime, maybe? Too bad...

Did you enjoy Fractale?
That question has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Yes.
There's only 4 episodes so far, right?

Bodacious Space Pirates OP

I love this OP. Great direction of the animation during the opening and the song is infectious. The song is titled "Extreme Space Symphony's Movement VII「Infinite Love」" by Momoiro Clover Z and it features ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman. Odd pairing.

Phi Brain 17

It's exposition time! Now with that plot out of the way, I guess the show will get back to ridiculous puzzles if the
lightsaber battle or whatever
in the preview is any indication. Also I got bored enough to look up Shintaro Asanuma and was amused to find out he was the lead in Tatami Galaxy, Nyan Koi, and Seitokai Yakuindomo.

Still not sure if I'm going to want to bother with the second season of this or not. The characters are amusing, but it's empty calories overall.

It reminds me of this sort of:

The epic, guitar driven orchestral insanity and cuteness.
Holy fuck I love music like this. Somebody lead me to more. I NEEEEEED it.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the fact that Fractale had Kana Hanazawa and ended up being pretty boring despite that.:P

Moe Star Trek 2

THOSE. ARE. THE. MOST. AWESOME. GUNS. I. HAVE. EVER. FUCKING. SEEN.

Looks like they are prepping the ship and starting her training. I love all the explanatory stuff. I eat that shit up. I will veryl ikely enjoy the hell out of the rest of this show.
Chiaki is super HNNNNNGHHHHH <3 <3 <3
I also like that green haired character.

I don't know what my favorite Trek episode is, there are so many good ones, but while I definitely liked seasons 6 and 7 of DS9 (it's my second favorite Trek series overall), that wouldn't be my favorite episode. I like the borderline naive optimism of classic Trek... that kind of optimism is so rare in sci-fi! There are good reasons for that, certainly, but it is true that it's uncommon, and I did like it.

While DS9 is my favourite, I still enjoy seeing that type of optimism in a show. As dark as DS9 was, when compared to the recent Battlestar Galactica, it is child's play. I liked BSG but I don't see myself going back and watching it a second time. With Star Trek, I can see myself coming back to it many times through out life and never finding it to wear thin.

Gintama 244

Mostly set up today, things look to get thorny next week.

Note: Never expected to see a Slam Dunk parody.

Edit:

Moe Star Trek 2.

When I think Star Trek, the last which comes to mind is moe.

Awesome Space Pirates 3

I LOVE THIS.
Damn this is a really well detailed and carefully thought out series.
I love the design of the ship and the spacewalk sequence. This reminds me a lot of Planetes and that's a REALLY good thing. So many delicious details to soak up here. The bridge design is clever too.

Thinking about it now, i'm almost beginning to think that Space Pirates is just going to be a show to marathon, and not a show to watch week by week.

I would say that is a good assumption. It definitely reminds me of Planetes in that regard, because a lot of that show involved training and practice missions and slow progression. Definitely a show that you would need to take in several episodes at a time at least.

Space Moe Pirates 4

OK yeah. I definitely love this a lot.
So technical. So HNNNNG. Sold.
Also, the soundtrack is fucking amazing. Maybe even better than Rinne's. I especially love the Celtic influenced and electronic music. I feel like there is so much to learn about this ship and how this world works. Its going to be really fun to find out.
I also fully expect speculations and ship schematics to start popping up around the net really soon.

The first episode of Planetes had more action and story progression than all four Pirates episodes.

Pirates has just big pacing problems. I mean we still don't know more about all the characters or the world than after the first episode just some technobubble about the ship.

Comparing Boring Space Pirates to Planetes in any way should be frowned upon.

It's like Legend of Galactic Heroes with girls!

No, it's not like Galactic Heroes or Planetes or Crest of the Stars or Captain Harlock or even Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko.

atm It's more like a standard high-school girl show with a space ship club attachment

Zero F (ep3)

Say what you want about Zero F but it keeps shit close to home. I feel like it's 2006 again and I can snuggle up with that delightful nostalgia. The show just "feels" the same. Even shows I'm liking like Nisemonogatari change feel and theme. Shows that you expect to never change like SZS, do.

Guiche is awesome with his bullshit and Sheffield with that rack, holy hell. I'm still pissed though that there is now a team of people who can use
void magic. Makes Louise now just a part of the puzzle. I'm fine with allowing its use elsewhere but it shouldn't just start showing up everywhere.

Uchuu Joshi koukousei no Nichijou 4

I appreciate all the details they try to put in, instead of the usual:

"Hey lets do a test run around the star!"
Lol Ok! Put the key in the ignition and turn the ship on!"
HAI the ships on lets go fly now!
YABE, there are pirates nearby!
Charge lasers and direct shields to front!
Lock on and fire!
:doushio our lasers wont penetrate their shields!
NOT TO WORRY! I'll pull something out of my ass and let us win this battle!
"Divert all power from the ship to main cannons to do one huge mega blast!
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life captain. Do you really think the laser can handle that amount of power without breaking? Do you think no limiters are put in place, or failsafes activate when you try to use 5000% more power than usual? WHat you have suggested is akin to trying to attach a nuclear powerplant to a toy laser to make it burn through steel
SUGOI IT LOOKS LIKE ITS WORKING CAPTAIN CHAN
EEEEEEEEHHHHHHHH?!?!?
YAY WE SCARED THE PIRATES OFF
WAI WAI YATTA

I like hearing about flight plans and Transponders and IFF and Information Warfare and the main character not automatically becoming the captain and creating a virtual machine of their ship for the attackers to break into while the actual running ship is disconnected from the network and spoofing the radar and Pinging other ships and all that fun stuff.

It can get a bit slow at times, so I see why some wouldn't be interested.

Moretsu Pirates 4

Been wondering... How do skirts stay down in zero g?

Legit answer: Anime.

There's even a TVtrope for it, but for time constraining reasons the link shall not be posted.

The show is plodding along, I don't know what I'm supposed to expect from this show, it's realy weird.

Hnnng no Lahnnnnghhh ep4

hnnnggh hnnnnghh hnnnnghh hnnnnghh Lan hnnnnnnnghh hnnnnggg hhhnnnnghh woof hnnnnghh

It's wan for the extra hnng factor *tips over magazine rack*.

I could watch Lan attempts at failing everything all day.

Mirai Nikki - 16

I find it amazing, how she can just casually walk up to someone with a knife, with those eyes of intent like that.

Gintama - 244

Mostly a setup episode, I love these arcs, and they have yet to dissapoint.

You did not just compare it to Planetes...
idKwpDRErLXTf.png

because that would mean I would be somewhat interested in the show.

Well sure I can see the see the simularities in that they're both set in space and... uh... they're in space.

Watched like one half of Nisemonogatari ep.3 before I threw up and went to sleep, and it was nice seeing something that was more akin to the earlier half of the first season. Will finish the other half later.

Yes I compared it to PLanetes.
I'm not backing down from that either. It feels similar to me.
It does have different pacing, but I don't care. I love the details.
I like it better than if they had just thrown her into the captains chair and sent her out totally unprepared. That would make it like Irresponsible Captain Tylor and a lot of other shows that just throw the main character into a situation. This one decided to take it time. I am fine with that.

Sure, but as this show shows, that isn't because this approach can't be great. That's because they'd rather focus more on the shooting-at-stuff action. And I just don't agree that that is an inherently better approach, I just don't.
If I remember, I'll try to reply to some of your other points, but I'll just say that SatoJun's Aria also features exposition - you have the girls explaining how gondolas work, you have some dudes talking about how they maintain the weather and gravity on Mars, and you have a lot of Venetian-phillia that Anthony Bourdain would be proud of. But because the anime follows the "show don't tell" rule of writing, it never feels tedious to watch.
Having guys explain stuff to each other while tapping on consoles or sitting around in a briefing room is rarely interesting.
(Which, incidentally, is what happens in probably every single Star Trek episode).
