Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Reggie at CES said they would be sharing some information leading towards the "re-reveal" at E3.

Not sure how true this is, but it would make sense to show something new at GDC.

Iwata basically said there'd be no game announcements (first party, anyway) for U until e3, when it's shown in the final form in the latest Investor's Q&A. I'm not keeping my hopes up.

If they're dropping bombs at investor meetings you best believe they'll have at least one thing worthwhile at GDC.

Best case scenario we get some network/UI features and a general hint at their philosophy for the system, in my opinion.

A glimpse of the UI and whatnot would be more than worth it for meeee. That plus some more general information and I'd be pleased. They should get all that stuff out of the way, so E3 can be all about GAMESSSSS.

I imagine GDC will have a bit of a blow-out on Nintendo Network, seeing as it ties into 3DS as well.

It's the right place for it.

Remember 2010? Remember people's hopes for 2011 (that 5th Element gif)? I want that.

'Iwata: We got Zelda 3DS, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns 2, Super Peach Adventure, Wave Race, F-Zero, Wii Sports, Star Fox, New Super Mario World, Xenoverse, Wii Fit U, Metroid Dread, The Legend of Shiek, Ravenblade, Mother 4, Star Tropics and Ice-Climbers. Cross-game chat, no friend codes, app store, demos day 1, Chase Mii and Battle Mii built in, and the damn thing will make you flap-jacks. We out, peace!

Reggie: Boxes checked, b!tches!

Iwata: (laughs)'

Something like this anyway:

Sigh, it's always nice to want things.

Anyhow, now that DLC is confirmed, will that mean we could *finally* get Ura Zelda on the Virtual Console? I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to replicate such a function (Iunno, maybe I'm wrong.) But it would be mighty cool..
It would be incredibly hard, since Zelda Ura was never finished, and most of its assets are probably long gone by now. except for the few things that were on the cartridge. And the US cartridge even had the connection code removed.

Knowing gaf this has probably been posted already. Frankly, it's only tangentially related to Wii U speculation, but it looks good nonetheless.

I'll relate it to the topic by saying: I want this artstyle for a new Zelda game.

Here it is: click for youtube

I've first seen it on ign, but I thought I'd link the video directly.

Yeah, sadly a fair amount of its assets are gone, but maybe they'd end up salvaging what's left and adding different stuff. But, they probably have no N64 development tools anymore.

In short: I'm dreaming things.

As much as I like the Toon Link style, for Zelda 3DS and Wii U it can go die slowly in a hole with a photo of Lady Gaga taped to its face.

Really? I think especially for 3DS it would be ideal. Any form of stylisation would be ok with me, really. Just don't make it look "real" like Skyrim.

WindWaker is the only game/style to have the artwork really match the game. A style like TP has been let down by hardware, so I think with the Wii U it'd be the frist time to see the game live up to the artwork. That's why I'd be more interesting in seeing a TP looking game.

What style of artwork do you hope Nintendo goes with, with Zelda Wii U? Would you like it to look like an even prettier Zelda HD Experience (shown at E3 2011) or more like the suped up cel shaded look in Zelda: The Lost Oracle (fan made, awesome trailer for a Wii U Zelda game)?

E3 can't come soon enough....

I prefer the "new game, new art style" approach they've taken for the last three console games. I'd like them to do that instead of revisit the visual styling of WW/TP/SS. Something new and refreshing.

This'll sound weird I know. But I want TP, but I want them to do something with the draw distance like in SS (close up = real models, far away = blobby painting) so as in, in the Water Temple, you get closer to a room, it forms into its models, but as you go further, it disappears into the element of the temple (fire, water, shadow, etc.)

Sounds weird I guess, but it'd be very cool to see in action.

Yeah I get your vision; sounds like a good way to implement the elements.

The biggest threat to Nintendo with the mobile entertainment though is just that- the games. That's why I was thinking they are going to find a way to offer the same 'hot' apps that you can get on your phone (angry birds and the like). Maybe they won't be able to convince people to stop gaming on the phones, but with as cheap as some of these games can be had for could they possibly get a cut of the profits with people double-dipping on the Wii U?

I am trying to think of why someone would play on the Wii U controller when they probably have their phone in their pocket... maybe Nintendo will actually have a robust online network with leaderboards/friend challenges etc. Probably not likely but the 'support for mobile games' in the article got me thinking (or just confused me).

The biggest threat to Nintendo regarding mobile devices is whatever people happen to be doing on them that isn't related to gaming. I'm talking about facebook, YouTube, listening to music, and anything else that keeps the user from getting lost in a video game. While mobile games may seem like a direct threat to Nintendo, they at least keep people interested in video games as a hobby. Those people are still possible future Nintendo customers. Anyway...

To get mobile gamers interested in Wii U, Nintendo needs to be smart with their message. The vast majority of mobile gaming happens at home [source], so Wii U actually does cater to mobile gamers despite it being home-based. The marketing has to make it crystal clear that whenever they're playing handheld games at home (in bed, in the kitchen, wherever), they could be doing the same thing but with actual next-gen console games on the Wii U controller. They also need to explain that if someone only wants to spend a couple bucks on a game, then the Nintendo Network eShop has them covered as well. If Nintendo can get those two points across to the handheld gamers out there, then all that's left are the games themselves to seal the deal.

As far as getting mobile games ported to the Wii U, it's up to the publishers and whether or not they like money. Incidentally, the Angry Birds guys expressed interest in the Wii U last E3.

[PS: Don't get gaming news from local newspapers. That would be like going to IGN for gaming news.]

To be honest, I think that if Iwata does do a keynote at GDC they'll use it to announce any big 3DS games left this year, like showing NSMB 3DS or announcing Zelda 3DS in case that's happening this year, or giving us a release window for Paper Mario and Animal Crossing.
That way they wouldn't have to take as much time away from the Wii U at E3, and I honestly hope they don't share ANY more info before E3, it'd make it much more exciting.

Oh and Hi GAF.

Slim to none, unless they are planning to announce a new version of Classic controller pro.
Yeah, that's what i'm hoping for. The Classic Controller Pro is alright, but at the end of the day it's still just a 20$ controller. It also lacks indents to put your middle fingers on the back.
It's also missing L3 and R3.
Slim to none, though I'm not sure whys you'd want that.
I'm not interested in touchscreen controllers, or motion controls. I just want a controller that's solid and functions correctly with out any gimmicks. This is from someone who's owned a Wii since launch, i'm just tired of it personally.

I'm sure Nintendo will rebrand most Wii accessories for the Wii U. Though along a with a redesigned Wii controller a stand alone Classic Controller Pro wouldn't be out of the question. Besides, if Ono was speaking real talk last year, there will likely be a Street Fighter title for Wii U at launch and a fight stick will likely be made available. I don't see a manufacture banking on all Wii U owners having a Wii remote to hook it up to. So I figure they'll be a stand alone option made available in the launch window

Edit: and to that affect it would make sense for NCL to release a wireless Wii U option.

Did Nintendo ever squash those rumors about them dropping the Wii U name for something less confusing?

EDIT: "Confusing" in that people would mistake it for an add-on or minor upgrade.

Nope. Not even a "We don't comment on rumors or speculation" remark.

they probably won't have an actual conference or anything but lots of game news comes out at that time, so they'll probably give some other details, but don't expect anything game specific. Could happen MAYBE from 3rd parties, but Nintendo is probably shutting game talk down until E3. But maybe more specific online information, maybe we'll see the console again in its final form. WHO KNOWS.

When was Red Steel 1 announced?

I remember it was a few months before E3 2006. It really built the hype for the game, even though it was crap. I can see Ubisoft itching to show Killer Freaks and get a head start. Because if Nintendo brings the goods, no-one will care.

Nopers, and even if so, it'd just be "We have no comment."
I've grown to like Wii U anyway, only thing I see 'em doing is calling it U, Ultra or something coffee-y to tie in with the code name.

(OOH! How 'bout Steam? Like Steamed Milk? OOH. AND IT COMES WITH STEAM

AND I'M PULLING FANBOY DREAMS OUTTA MY ASS)

With this talk of asymmetrical gameplay, I can’t see Wii remote +Nunchuck being the only option available. Given the shitty track record developers have for FPS controls with the Wii’s control options; almost every game would play like shit (and lets not even get into split-screen), if it support some "Wii U controller overlord" type setup.

They really need to consider multitouch support for that screen. They're closing themselves out of the tablet market otherwise...iPad ports (or simultaneous releases) would in itself be a huge boost for third-party support and give the system exclusive access to that market.

Very true for the iPad port support.

And in that same line of thinking...

Have they said anything about adding actual pressure sensitive triggers? Because fuck this thing/this thing is fucked if it doesn't have pressure sensitive triggers. The nubs are bad enough (not the online players I mean the analog nubs) but in the end they get the job done.

But not having pressure sensitive triggers...

Was the tablet confirmed no multitouch? Haven't heard about that. It should still be on he cards, resistive screens have improved as well.

Multi-touch (capacitive) just isn't happening. There are too many issues, the main ones being lack of precision and durability. Not that I agree or am defending Nintendo; just saying what we've heard and have discussed countless times before.

I’m ok with both.

If they decide to go the cel-shaded route though, I want to see a different art style. Wind Waker was nice and all, but its art style is the most overused in the series. I’d love to see a cel-shaded Zelda with this art:

And THQ are working on THREE Wii U projects according to the french source in the OP. Would be nice to edit that.

Actually what's the consensus on what the exclusive might be? I haven't seen people discuss it much, surprisingly.

What if Nintendo moneyhatted Patrice Désilets' game?

/wild speculation

Whoa, that's a lot of assumptions there.

Your quote from him asks explicitly if 720 is double of 1080 (double = 2 times). I replied accordingly. Which is no, 1080 is not double of 720.

And my quote explicitly says that 720 (short for 1280 x 720) is actually 1440 if you double it (short for 2560 x 1440), so no it's not 1080. It's bigger, yes and it is understood that if 1440 is bigger than 1080, then I didn't need to explicitly say that.

Maybe it was you that assumed or misunderstood that I allegedly misunderstood Log4Girlz poorly written post :)

*Edit*

I can see where the confusion might have been. In my original post I put "double" in quotes. I put it in quotes to give it the context of Log4Girlz definition of "double". Not because I actually thought 1080 was double of 720. I don't even know why anyone thought that if in my first sentence I explicitly say that 720 x 2 is bigger than 1080.

There was no reason to say what you did really. I asked, specifically, and rhetorically actually, about 720 p being double 1080 p. These are standard resolutions, I am not asking what the doubling of a specific number was, I was basically saying that the standard resolution of 1080 p was roughly double the pixels of 720 p. There is no other way to interpret it. This is why i clarified in my post, I wasn't correcting myself, but trying to let you understand what the first post meant.

Just wanted to comment on your poorly written post. Carry on.
