Winter 2012 Anime Thread of Roundcats Up in This

You know it is a bad anime season when their isn't even a title worth making an official topic for that will die anyways.

I would make an official thread for Another but it's pointless because as you say, it will die anyways!
But will it be impaled in the throat by an umbrella or splattered in an elevator crash?

In Another why is there no 4th floor in the elevator? Its been bugging me everytime I rewatch gifs since episode 1. B 1 2 3 5 6 7

In both Chinese and Japanese, the number 4 ('shi') is pronounced similarly to the word for death ('shi'). They are written differently. The similarity is more pronounced in Japanese, which is not a tonal language. In Chinese, the 'shì' for 4 is pronounced with a downwards tone, the 'shǐ' for death is pronounced with an even tone. You can easily hear the similarity and difference by putting 4 into Google Translate and translating to Mandarin Chinese, and listen to it spoken. Then do the same for death. Now do this and translate it to Japanese. It sounds very differently spoken in Chinese because of the tonal variance, but very similar in Japanese. In both cases, because the words are spoken somewhat (in Chinese) to very (in Japanese) similarly, they are associated with each other in superstition. So you will find buildings in both China and Japan which lack a 4th floor, skipping from 3 to 5.

This is indeed similar to the 13th floor in Western superstition but unlike in the West where 13 is an arbitary number designated as unlucky, in Chinese and Japanese there is a linguistic reason for the association.

That blurry, huh?
Did you actually see the recentish trailer that shows how nice the CG looks or are you just spewing crap based on the reveal teaser?

I'm really interested in seeing how putting someone like Imaishi in charge of the CG animation will turn out. We saw how well CG worked in PSG when someone like Sushio was very involved in the process, so I'm curious to see how BRS will turn out.

That was for selected shots, though. This is for huge chunks of the series, and with characters being CG as well. It could work in theory, but given the track record of noitaminA scifi and anime in general, I'll remain skeptical until it actually proves me wrong. You're not really one to talk about spewing crap, anyway.

The last PV I saw for the BRS TV series actually looked pretty damn good so I'm kinda looking forward to it. I did notice the CG but it looked surprisingly well done, but that could be thanks to Youtube's shitty quality hiding some of the imperfections. It doesn't really matter as we'll find out if it's any good in a couple of hours anyway!

Is this because all of it is CG?
From memory the only scenes in CG are the ones that take place in Black Rock Shooter's universe.

I don't think you realize how much of PSG was CG. :P Testament to how well it was integrated, I suppose. Of course, PSG's artstyle lends itself better to CG I will admit.

And I don't get what "the track record of noitaminA scifi and anime in general" has to do with the CG??

Because anime has a terrible track record when it comes to using CGI well, and noitaminA scifi has tended to be garbage. Put those two together and I'm just going to expect an ugly, bad show and be pleasantly surprised if it's otherwise.

I think Char summed it up really. Just like the TV size versions, except EVEN MORE!

This is not a typical anime CG thing. Hiroyuki Imaishi is the CG animation director. Whether or not you like his shows, it's a fact that he has visual talent and could make this work.

The lack of MARU! in the OP's Instrumental version really sucks. It just doesn't sound the same :(

He could, I just refuse to put any faith in a CG-heavy, sci-fi noitaminA show that's being hyped by duckroll. I've been burned too many times.

The CG in the BRS trailers has never bothered me. What does bother me visually are the rather drab looking "real world" segments.
That is a problem too.

This was the same in the OVA. I'm pretty sure it's intentional to contrast the real world and the Otherworld.

Kana Hanazawa will be returning to her role of Mato, that's enough for me to watch it!

I really love the instrumental version, it's just the piano (mostly) and her voice. The MARU! wasn't really necessary there honestly.

The interesting thing about the CG in BRS TV is how Sanzigen is really trying to do something that a lot of other studios don't really try at all - using CG to replicate the look and feel of 2D animation in a really stylized way.

The Imagine Nation special on NHK World yesterday had some pretty interesting insight on some techniques they're using to achieve this. Aside from just celshading the models, they're also paying a lot of attention to how they modify the outline of characters in post-processing, such that the line work isn't a consistent thickness. This is meant to replicate how when you do a drawing by hand, the thickness of lines are not the same based on you draw with a pen.

Another technique they're using is deliberately limiting the frames of animation after the initial render. This replicates how 2D animation looks when composited from keyframes and inbetween frames. If it looks completely smooth like CG tends to compared to animation, you lose the impact of the strong poses in keyframes that traditional animation is known for. Presumably this is more pronounced because of Imaishi's style when it comes to directing action.

Let me put it this way. What does this look like to you?

Is it CG at all? Are some parts of it CG? Is it CG with hand drawn parts overlaid on it? Is it just a 2D design? No, it's entirely 100% CG with no 2D touch up at all. That's what Sanzigen is doing with BRS TV.

It's true that in the trailer there are parts which definitely look very obviously CG, like the bullets shells, some of the enemies robots, and some weapon parts. But the impressive achievement is that in reality ALL the action scenes are entirely 100% CG with no 2D work whatsoever in them aside from storyboards and layouts. Not a single 2D animator has touched any of the scenes in the BRS fantasy world. Only the real world is actual traditional animation.

This is pretty interesting stuff, and I think people will be surprised after the first episode.

The CG in BRS actually looks kind of stylish for what it is, but yeah the 2D real-world sections definitely look bland as. Starting to get HYPED for BRS... will watch the OVA later today to PREPARE.

Yeah I think the 2D animation in BRS TV is what I'm most worried about. I hope Ordet doesn't mess it up too badly, but it really does look bland especially compared to the OVA which had really nice character designs and the look of the animation was very warm. Here it just looks like a cheap average TV series with moe. :(

I think the real question is - are boxes hard to draw?!

Well, the line-thickness thing is a good idea, and something they should have done with CGI from the beginning. That's a technique they used in Iron Giant as well. Limiting frames is a pretty common thing they already do. Of course, the biggest problem inherent in trying to recreate a 2D style of animation in 3D is that they're inherently different processes. You just aren't going to have the same kind of freedom and direct control over the visuals that you have in 2D animation. So while it's possible it could look good, it's not likely to look as good as if it was animated by hand.

I should watch the OVA again too.

Is the series actually re-telling the same story as the OVA only longer?

Sort of. It's a re-imagination of the OVA story, so it starts from the beginning, but there are more character relationships and stuff. The wheelchair girl is Yomi's friend, who presumably wants to keep Mato away so she can have Yomi to herself, Mato already knows Yuu since they're both in the basketball club, and this is before she and Yomi become close friends apparently. There's also a school counselor and a senior in the basketball club.

Hey, cool. So it's likely that BRS will fight multiple bosses in Otherworld this time, which was only hinted at in the OVA outside of the opening fight. I want her to fight lots of bad guys this time!

YAY! I'm getting kinda hyped now...
Aww, no White Rock Shooter from the game.
I watched the BRS OVA a couple of days ago to get myself up to speed on this. It didn't do much for me and I thought that
Yomi's jealousy over Mato's new friend
was pretty stupid throughout, but it was watchable and had pleasant animation and background art.

After watching the OVA and a couple of the trailers for the series, I don't know what to think about some of the stylistic changes they're making. I much preferred the look of the BRS world in the OVA to the purple and white mess we've seen in the trailers, and, well, there's the CG, but that's been discussed into the ground already. I've seen brief snippets of what look like different environments in BRS-world so I'm hoping that all the purple is just from one scene. At least the character design is somewhat improved. The OVA had some of the most comical seifuku ever, the beige jackets they're wearing in the series are a huge improvement.

I have no particular fandom for BRS in general and it's one of those things like Touhou that I'll never understand why Japanese otaku latched on to it so enormously. Somebody please alleviate my ignorance. Do they just really, really like that particular character design? What is she, other than a Vocaloid fanart that somehow spawned its own universe? Does she actually shoot black rocks or is her name just some terrible Engrish?

MARU! DAME~ MARU~

And fucking PUMPKIN CAKE and dat PIANO VERSION!

This single release is so good. Also the "Jersey" Nakajima is wearing on the front is a cute tie-in with the Jersey Club.

I'm too lazy to make the BRS TV OT alone. Maybe Unknown Soldier can make it, and I'll throw in any missing additional information later. So.... lazy.... :(

From what I got Otaku just loved bulimic pale emo loli with big gun and revealing fanservice clothing.

She the loli verision of cloud strife (replace big sword with big gun)

This show has the most offensive art in the Spring 2012 season so far. Scroll down and look at those eyeball destroying character designs. Aaaaaaaaaaaaah. :(
Before I even clicked the link I knew it was going to be the AKB48 anime. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
Also, come on guys, it's formally known as the "Rasmeg Duo" version. Why would you not want to refer to it by such a cool and symbolic name?

Like, it's neat that Araragi loves helping potential harem candidates people, but nothing happens in this show. Ever. .

No no, you see, that stuff and talking is what's happening. So it's not like nothing is happening!
