What about when people post in sports threads using "we" to refer to the team? Totally creepy dude, they think they're big buff men!

You know they're pointing to their right, right?
I didn't. I thought it was stupid. I did discover in that thread however that Sloths are kind of cute.
Damn right you did.

I doubt k-pop will ever truly become mainstream in the west though because even more than our own pop stars, k-pop idols rely very heavily on image (hence the whole "idol" thing). They are far more than just musical artist in east and a significant portion of their fandom seem to be fans of the artist themselves more than their actual music. Without that idol status, I don't think they could top any charts in the west.

There is truth to this.

Idols spend nearly as much broadcast time (actually more if they're popular) off the stage than they do on live performances/music videos. They're definitely more media personalities than just musical/pop artists. I took interest into Girls' Generations because of their individually charming personalities which you could never realize in a synchronize performance or music video.

Also, the average kpop fandom isnt anymore creepy than you average sports fans. Do you think a passer by is going to appreciate one game/match of a sport they rarely watch - the same way a person who has "their" team in the game whom they have followed for many years...? Does that make the sports/team fan creepy now...?

well... even though i love their music i also doubt that they'll end up being sucessfull in the US. but it's nice to see that K-Pop gets its famous 15 minutes outside of Asia cause it's just damn good pop music. and it really deserves some recognition.

This is true. SNSD, even more-so than other idol groups, and this might just be because they are the most popular to begin with, seems to be adored by a good portion of the fanbase for their broadcast time as much/or more so than their music.

In America, no such thing as those Korean shows exist. Most pop stars get attention in the media by either acting crazy, dumb or having an ego the size of the moon. The girls charming personalities will do nothing to help them in America. Nobody in this country is going to cover the girls of SNSD when they can cover Gaga dressing like Edward Scissorhands or Kanye proclaiming he's Jesus.

And that might be the real crux of the problem. The very thing that makes SNSD so lovable in Korea, just makes them 'boring' in America. Which is truthfully another reason I think 2NE1 has the best shot here.

It's funny how the two main arguments to explain how they cant be popular in america are contradicting each othet. 1) it's t awkward. They are 9. People prefer individuality. 2) it's not original .

SNSD as media personalities are just totally charming when hanging out at their dorm, sharing stories / dorky quirks about each other on talk shows, interacting/competing with other idols on game shows, or seeing them practice hard for their dance routines or sitting and eating on practice room floor (when Jessica said she was hungry).

They even shine golden when spending broadcast time on a farm like digging a hole for a toilet, picking apples, making tofu, training a cow and shoveling poop...for real. These girls work hard, which is evident in behind the scenes clips when you see members dozing off back stage when just sitting down before a performance, or having micro-sleeps in front of the camera during quiet moments of a show.

As actual people they're actually very down to earth and charming to watch. Its not delusional for fans to support these sweet, nice girls on their American TV appearances and wishing them success. When people tweet ignorant shit like calling them untalented strippers that's just plain up bullshit and the furthest thing from the truth....

My girl used to be a huge fan of K-Pop and it grew on me with all the listens, but this is still horrible.

Following a sports team =! following a celebrity

Just in my opinion

Because one is a sports team that plays games, and the other is a celebrity who for some reason gets watched and does random stuff for media coverage?

They are on shows of all different kinds. They host shows. They act. They sing. They do commercials. They do interviews. They compete in athletics competitions.

"For some reason" - wut. It's entertainment. And it's not random. They get to do it because they're popular and because they're good at it.

Eh, I disagree. "For some reason gets watched" is a funny way of putting it.

Anyways, let us not forget that fans of sport teams also do a lot of crazy stuff too, like rioting and stuff. I even wager that when talking of extremities, extreme sport fans > extreme celebrity fans.

Leaving aside music (prefer Soshi), I'll admit that 2NE1 TV made them a lot cooler in my eyes, but Soshi got them soundly beat on variety skills.

Oh yeah, definitely agree with you there.. YG doesn't let his kids out much it seems so they all act so awkward. lol.

A lot of the "random stuff" actually benefited the South Korean society.

Invincible Youth (Take an Idol from the different girl groups and put them together on a farm to learn farming activities) increased the agricultural awareness in Korean households, and turned the isolated area they were filmin in into a tourist and educational farming center.

Companies donated top of the line tractors and equipment and by the end of the show turned a bare bones patch of dirt into a functioning and an agriculturally competitive, farming center. The show's cast got invited to Japan to host an episode on one of Japans farming estates because they were impressed with the Idols progress on their farm and appreciated the attention they gave the agriculture section in asian media. Best thing is, it was top-quality television and better than most reality TV from the east or west.

Reality TV in the west with celebrities result in shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashian's or Celebrity Apprentice where they bitch against each other and act like douches...

Korea's seemingly country-wide attempt to manufacture and export pop culture comes off as really disingenuous and is a bit disturbing to me.

If anything, they're being curiously open and straightforward about it. It's just an extremely organised music industry. Which sometimes does erratic and ill-advised things, to be sure, but they make plans.

And it's not as if they hide the expensively and arduously trained side of kpop - "manufactured" is a bit of a crap word to describe human beings doing a difficult job. Everyone knows that's what it is.

I don't understand how it's any different than 80% of pop music in America or any other country? Is American Idol disingenuous? The artists of kpop have to go through auditions and then several years of training. What's disingenuous is promoting someone who has absolutely no talent, like Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber.

And it's not like the Korean government is doing this. It is entertainment COMPANIES wishing to create music and a brand that people will like so they can make money. Please show me the difference between that and say, Dr. Dre "raising" Eminem.

At seven pages I was afraid. But the thread full of hate and vitriol. Good show gaf. That was horrifyingly bad and I enjoy pop music.

There is some good k-pop around. I don't consider myself a fan of k-pop but there is some good and catchy tunes like Sistar - So Cool and Troublemaker.

Utada Hikaru is great but i guess she does not really count since she's Japanese(?), but to me it could as well be in a same category :)

On the whole, there is virtually no appeal for North Americans. I question why they're even bothering performing here. The whole girl band gimmick reeks of the 1990s, complete with the choreographed dancing.
