Hey if they kill Zune and have a totally new program that handles everything i won't complain.

Will be interesting to see where the zunepass would fit into all of this.... We really don't need the desktop application anymore imo but I hope the new client will have access to the zune pass service (or when its called xbox music if the rumors are true)

I would love if they tied phone settings to your live ID like windows 8 will be....

How do you access Zune Pass on an Xbox?

Still love it.
Ok, I forgive you. ;-)

If they do replace the Zune desktop app, it better be with something good because that is what pushed me to get the HD in the first place. (I had to import it from the US)

How do you access Zune Pass on an Xbox?

Through the app on xbox.... it will get updated over time now like the zune desktop of old (would not be surprised if they added skydrive support to it to match the rumored new stuff in the phone... for your songs not available on zunepass, podcast subscription/streaming, etc).

Then on Windows 8 its in the new xbox app.

(notice the music section there.... I bet it matches the zune app on xbox now)

That's what I was getting at. You won't need the client to access Zune on Windows 8.

Floodgates have opened. Paul Thurrott has released some of what he knows:

http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/windows-phone-8-preview-142154

Thanks to a recent leak which has revealed some interesting information about the next major Windows Phone version, I can now publicly discuss Windows Phone 8 for the first time.

Windows Phone 8, codenamed Apollo, will be based on the Windows 8 kernel and not on Windows CE as are current versions. This will not impact app compatibility: Microsoft expects to have over 100,000 Windows Phone 7.5-compatible apps available by the time WP8 launches, and they will all work fine on this new OS.

Windows Phone 8, as its name suggests, will also be tied version closely to the desktop version of Windows 8 in other ways. They'll be launched closely to each other, and will share integrated ecosystems, thanks to the shared underlying code, components, and user experiences. Windows Phone 8 is part of the "Windows Reimagined" campaign that Microsoft announced for Windows 8. This makes sense as they're companion products in every sense of the word.

Windows Phone 8 will offer far more hardware choices than are available today, which will come in more form factors and offer more (four) screen resolutions. The compatible software services will be expanded dramatically, and made very consistent with what's being made available to desktop versions of Windows 8.

Key new features of Windows Phone 8 include:

Data Smart. A way to actively save cellular data when possible and avoid "bill shock". Microsoft (not coincidentally) just blogged about this feature in relation to Windows 8. Re-read that post and think about how a smart phone would need/use exactly the same functionality. Data Smart can be extended by wireless carriers to integrate with their offered data plans.

App-to-App communication. Because Windows Phone 8 apps, like Windows 8 apps, are sandboxed from each other, this new system will provide a Windows 8 contracts-like app-to-app communications capabilities.

Internet Explorer 10 Mobile. Windows Phone 8 will continue to used a highly tuned version of IE which utilizes the latest web technologies.

Shared components with Windows 8. The kernel, multi-core processor support, sensor fusion, security model, network, and video and graphics technologies are all coming to Phone from Windows 8.

Companion experiences with Windows 8. Microsoft is offering a very similar user experience across phone (Windows Phone 8), PC (Windows 8), and TV (Xbox vNext). There will be a new sync client, and not Zune PC software, and a set of common cloud services that will work across all three. This includes the ability to sync content (photos, music, movies) between the three screens, phone management from PC or web, shared content between each device, and Xbox LIVE games, entertainment, and more.

SkyDrive integration. Microsoft will make your content available on all of its platforms via SkyDrive.

Skype app. Still a separate but better app and not integrated into OS. Still optional.

NFC and Wallet. Windows Phone 8 will allow users to securely pay and share via NFC and manage an integrated Wallet experience.

Local Scout. Now with personal recommendations.

Camera improvements. New "lens apps" and a far more powerful camera experience.

Business features. Windows Phone 8 will include full-device, hardware accelerated encryption with BitLocker and always-on Secure Boot capabilities, just like Windows 8. Also, it will support additional Exchange ActiveSync policies and System Center configuration settings and inventory capabilities. Businesses will be able to distribute phone apps privately as they can with Windows 8 apps.

Obviously, there are still plenty of questions and of course information I'll continue to protect. But suffice to say that Microsoft's plans for Windows Phone are quite exciting indeed.

Interesting they differ on a few points..... the big one being skype.

I have actually best testing out skype over the past few weeks as a replacement to a calling plan.... so far its worked out very well. Hopefully the carrier will let me activate a data package on a wp8 device (was thinking verizon since they have the best lte network and likely will continue for the forseeable future)

you would actually need a device on verizon in order to do that

Looks like Copernicus was wrong.

of course he was just trolling

WP8 seems to come pretty close to feature parity with the big 2. The 2 things that keep me interested both have to do with the OS. 1) the os itself 2) the fact that the OS is such a departure that it is enforcing a design language with apps (one of my biggest gripes with android)

Still wish it wasn't branded Windows.

SCCM Integration is cool but I'm the only one in our infrastructure with a windows phone.

MS has an opportunity to push itself into corporate IT. It kept Blackberry alive for quite a while, and think about if people actually liked using their work devices.

Did thurrot post anything new? What did he add that we didn't already know?

*Different reporting on skype details
*Win8 Style contracts for apps
*SkyDrive integration with Win8, WP8, X720
*Some carrier extensions for Data Smart
*Companion experiences across W8,WP8, X720
*Personal recommendations in Local Scout

Those are the difference i can see.

If this is all true then I will stick with my Titan. I was going to get the Lumia 900 when it came out but I'll wait for the better hardware and features when WP8 comes out.

Thanks god MS implemented a Find My Phone feature. Left my phone in the work bathroom, realized it about an hour later, wasn't there. Checked the front desk, no one had turned it in. Used the find my phone online and saw it was still in the building so I thought the person just hadn't turned it in yet. Around 4:15 did it again and the phone is on the highway heading away, lol!! Told the security and they are looking to see who it could have been since we have card scanners before we enter and leave the building. Probably am not getting it back, but I left a funny message on the screen when I locked the phone from the Find My Phone website. But the Find My Phone site has stopped updating the whereabouts of my phone so I think they may have turned it off.

Now to call AT&T to see what I can do.

From PocketNow:

- "Also mentioned is support for app-to-app communication" (contracts)
- "revamped Skype client that hooks directly into the OS" (still an app, not a full integration like Facebook)
- "The Xbox Companion app, currently found on Windows Phones, will see a partner client on Windows 8. Skydrive support promises seamless sharing of data between devices" ("Companion experiences across W8,WP8, X720")
- "Windows Phone 8 will actively attempt to give Wi-Fi connections precedence, going so far as to automatically connect to carrier-owned WLANs when in range" (carrier extension for DataSmart)

So what's new from Thurrot is the new LocalScout feature.

It's true that everything is significantly degraded outside of the US

It's getting better. Even though Bing is an integrated app, they can enable features on the server side, like the did with Bing Vision this week. No software update required.

in France, UK, Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy and Sweden, and Bing Vision is now available in all of these countries. Bing Vision was originally introduced as built-in functionality to quickly compare retail and online prices, replacing the need for additional applications like RedLaser. Microsoft quietly enabled the additional markets this week

I wonder what made them spill the beans on Apollo without even confirming the existance of Tango. MWC will be interesting.

The information about Apollo was leaked, not purposely given out. It was mentioned in an internal video that was intended for Nokia (and other OEMs).

Then again, the timing could be a bit too good right now and it's really solid information at this point.

Joe Belfiore reads GAF confirmed!

e: In other news, the Lumia 900 is available for pre-order at Microsoft's retail stores. All two of them.

You got me!

Couldn't convince my wife to get a WP, she picked up an iPhone 4S today :(
The fact she had $150 in Fido dollars towards the purchase definitely made it an easier choice to get the iPhone for her.

After messing around with it, I admit it is very nice, but I have zero regrets in getting a Windows Phone. Love metro, live tiles and the facebook integration.

My wife's the same, she'd rather go with an iPhone again. She'd had one before, and is usually stubborn when she's comfortable with something. Me? I'm always off on the fringe trying crap out. :P

Do Microsoft stores sell phones unlocked if you buy them outright like Apple does?
No idea.

You got an Android phone?
so basically a wp7 phone won't be able to upgrade to wp8???

Who said that?

Yeah, she doesn't like change. She is comfortable with an iOS device.

You have failed us!!!

I got my wife all excited for the lumia 900, no way she's buying any other phone.
I hope

I know :( I did my best. I tailored my Focus to what she would like and basically gave a presentation, but it didn't work. My brother just got a WP this week though.
