nobody wants that.
i was just talking to AceBandage, he says he changed his mind. Metroid it is!

All jokes of course. :P

Here's what I see as the most likely possibilities for Retro's project-

Metroid - Not sure if it would be Prime 4 or a whole new reinterpretation of 3D Metroid, but they've proven that they can get more critical and commercial success out of the franchise than Sakamoto. They could also do an FPS in that universe starring Anthony Higgs.

Zelda spinoff - Probably not a mainline game, as that will probably be handled by Aonuma's team, but perhaps a spinoff of some variety? They could do an "Age Without a Hero" story starring Zelda/Shiek as a lead up to Wind Waker's great flood, for example.

Star Fox - It would not be a straight rail shooter unless it was a WiiUWare game. More likely, an attempt at doing right what Namco failed at with Assault.

Donkey Kong 3D - Not another DKCR, but maybe an attempt at redefining what 3D Donkey Kong is?

IP So Old It's New Again - Like Kid Icarus for Sakurai, some back catalog IP that's gone so long without updated that it offers a great deal of creative freedom and reinterpretation. Star Tropics and Mach Rider could fit this mold.

I would imagine that Retro's mandate is to create a core gamer focused title that shows off the technical power of the system, and also has some interesting uses for the new controller.

Just realised I'm featured on the front page for cocking up and getting this guy's account suspended.

Cool.

Honestly, I'd be really happy if it was a new, shooty IP - think one man's adventure to stop something happening to the world/his family, but with futuristic spacey elements, maybe even some conspiracy shit and overseeing aliens thrown in the mix. Sounds cooler in my head, and totally non-generic...

Either that or Metroid.

I highly doubt its a Zelda game. Those reports about Retro getting a hand on Zelda came after SS released, which was this past holidays and all it was were remarks that it would be interesting to see how that would work out. Retro has been working on something since 2010 when DKCR came out, and Nintendo uses them to revitalize those franchises they either can't handle internally at Japan like they would like to or don't care enough about to put in effort and make something themselves. That is why I doubt its a new IP.

My opinion is that its a new Star Fox game, a new Metroid, or an adventure franchise Nintendo has but haven't made a new entry in a while.

Metroid Prime 4 please and bring back Andrew Jones. One has to believe that the guys at Retro are extremely happy to finally be working with HD assets.
Edit: Isn't that why a few key members of the MP1 and MP2 team left to begin with?

I think they left because they wanted more freedom. They wanted their own company. It...didn't end well for them.

Nah. I'm pretty sure it's because they wanted to work on a console with more powerful architecture and felt trapped by the Wii's modest bump in power compared to the competition.

I'm sure it was a mix a both but the freedom part rings more true considering the studio's mission statement that they built afterward. Regardless it didn't end well for them.

It was to do with lack of creative freedom, yes. There's even a quote floating around from one of the guys that left; something along the lines of 'Don't work for Nintendo if you like the freedom to do what you want.'

Armature was the company they formed.

I reeeaally hope we get to see Retro's new game in June. C'mon, let's get the E3 ball rolling.

Which is stupid.
Any big company you work for will basically decide what you make, unless you're on Miyamoto's level.
So, it's either that, or make nothing...

I'd just "put up" with the company's control until you earn the right to make a unique IP.

If that never happens and you are a true artist/creative mind, then I'd maybe look elsewhere but Nintendo is a great gig to say the least and these guys weren't very patient and took a once in a lifetime chance for granted.

Now they will suffer like Rare did!

Huh.

I'd forgotten about this. Not that it has any impact on what project Nintendo decided to put them to work on, but it seems like Retro expected to return to the series at some point.

I'd guess that the new building is for Mario and Zelda teams, a few Nintendo-owned parties (Like Sora) and maybe a Wii U sector. Iunno.

The Tokyo building that they are constructing is to expand their Japanese teams, yes.
I dunno where the rumor that Retro is moving was from, though.

Moving Retro would make a *little* sense, IMO.

A) Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're Nintendo's most used "second-party" for the big titles.
B) They are wildly liked
and C) Wouldn't it just *kinda* fit in with Miyamoto's whole "assisting new employees"?

Also, THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A HUMAN? If it was a humanoid, I'd let it slide.

The faces have been discussed in this thread before, but again I urge everyone to look at the first post and check out what Gray Ginther has done. To reiterate, he was the lead character designer on Darksiders. Faces are his specialty.

Pretty sure Gandrayda was an alien.

The only reason they'd need to move is if they were expanding beyond the space they have in their old building.
Which is certainly possible, but not confirmed.
They won't be moving them to Tokyo, if that's what you're implying.

Not Tokyo, but anywhere closer to Nintendo EAD would benefit them.
