Has anyone who played with the Vita at a GameStop notice any scratches on the screen/rear panel?

SONY should of made the game boxes even smaller. ALOT of waste to hold that small cart.

Actually, in this regard, I think they could have been made even smaller. The carts are so small and instruction manuals aren't really included anymore, so why waste the plastic on the cases?

I'm guessing it's the same case as the memory cards. Larger packaging makes them easier to spot from a distance.

I was kind of dissapointed that I wasn't "awed" by the system when I saw/picked it up for the first time.

I felt the same way. I didn't get the same, "WHOA, A HANDHELD CAN DO THIS?!" that I got from the GBA, DS, PSP, and 3DS, I think because I've already seen console quality graphics on phones/tablets. I was impressed by the physical screen, just not by anything running on it.

I couldn't imagine fitting the Vita in my pocket for instance.

Yeah, trolls on /v/ liked to joke about how huge the Vita was but I just let it pass through one ear and out the other (through my eyes and out my....?) but after actually handling one, yeah, this thing will never be in a pocket.

Why are you here? Does the PSP fit in a pocket? Does the 3DS fit in a pocket? Does ... should I go on?

Why does any of this matter. And if the 3DS made you go 'WHOA A HANDHELD CAN DO THIS?!" then... okay.

LoL you really said that when you played the 3DS for the first time? What wowed you? Oh I'm guessing the price of Steel Diver.. all jokes aside what made you say wow?

I got the same impression (as did a few others in this thread) it just didnt hit me like the psp or 3ds did (psp was streets ahead graphic/capabilities at the time and the 3ds's 3d impressed me at the time....though that was extremely fleeting). I feel this thing will really shine a year or 2 from now when the small kinks are fixed and it starts moving along with incredible software/apps. Still getting next week though (unless i decide to wait for the FEB instead of earlybird)

Its just dudes opinion on the handheld after he tried it. I dont see the need for a uproar.

I guess being able to resell the games at some point is a smart move to buy the packaged games, but I really just want to go full PSN-purchases this time. I don't have room in my life for physical crap.

If the DS made you say "Whoa a handheld can do this!?!"...then I'm not sure what doesn't impress you in life.

...Well besides the Vita apparently

Vita is probably the most impressive handheld I've ever played. I don't particularly understand the people that weren't wowed by it.

It just seems to be a gigantic leap forward for handhelds in general on all fronts.

PSP was lacking in control inputs since day one, had a rather unimpressive screen, and lacked online functionality and a proper OS. DS/3DS never seemed to be graphically competitive, continue to have lacking control inputs, and online play seems to be an afterthought. 3DS has gotten better with this, but it still doesn't feel up to par. 3D is nice, but not perfect, and I'd rather have a much nicer screen. OLED makes it possible to have a high-end screen in the palm of your hands. So nice looking.

In many respects, I feel that the experience of handheld devices has been significantly compromised in many ways, but I do not get that feeling at all with the vita.

In fact, outside of graphics, there's plenty of advantages to the Vita that significantly outweigh its console cousins:

1) OS is probably the best I've seen on any game device (sans Steam) to date. Leap frogs PSN and XBL in terms of functionality and quickness.

2) Rear touch pad offers control inputs for experiences that really can't be had anywhere else. I'm really looking forward to seeing developers try and take advantage of it for first person shooters to give the Vita more of a 'mouse' feel for aiming. Seems perfect for it.

3) All digital library for the first time ever on a console/handheld platform (not counting phones). This is huge to me, and I really wish consoles offered something similar. I feel that physical media is archaic and cumbersome, and I'd rather just be done with it altogether. Feels so nice having all of your games on one device without having to worry about swapping out media. This is also crucial, imho, for a handheld.

It also helps that the launch lineup for Vita is probably the best one we've had in a long, long time. Can't remember the last time I've purchased more than 3 games for launch, but I'm likely to get around 6 or more for the Vita. Just so much great content spanning a wide variety of genres. I'm super hyped for this launch.

Yes, both the 3DS and PSP comfortably fit in my pockets, and I frequently take them out with me (3DS obviously more often than the other b/c of Street Passing).

And yes, the 3DS graphics wowed me because of the 3D. I sat there and watched the menus spin around on the top screen playing with the slider for a full five minutes after unboxing it. In fact, I probably spent more time look at the menus in 3D than I did playing games on it for the first three months I owned it because there wasn't anything to play on it, lol.

To put it another way, in 2002 my Nokia cell phone couldn't do what my GBA was doing. In 2006 my Razr couldn't do what my DS was doing. Whatever phone I had in 2008 couldn't keep up with the PSP. My Droid X couldn't do 3D in 2011. However, I have several mobile devices capable of approximating what I saw on the Vita earlier this evening.

That's not saying the graphics aren't good, because they are, just that there wasn't that jaw drop moment, like that time in 2005 when I saw King Kong running on a 360 demo unit in Wal-Mart, etc.

I played with it today as well and honestly yes it is big but....it is amazing I own a Sprint Galaxy S 2 (Epic Touch) it is 4.5 inch screen and I love the phone. Putting a awesome screen for a gaming system and having fantastic games running on it....how can you pass that up.. I am 5'3 110 pounds.....Im small lol and the Vita was fine with me holding it.

I had a wonderful Australian Cattle Dog/German Shepherd Mix that was named Hobbes in the 90s the mother was an Australian Cattle Dog named Robyn so it was Robyn and Hobbes.

this thing will never be in a pocket.
Yes, both the 3DS and PSP comfortably fit in my pockets.

The rest of your points are subjective and thats cool as we are all entitled to our opinions, but the Vita is barely any larger than a PSP 2000 so if the PSP fits comfortably then the Vita should also.

The Vita is
83.55 mm (3.289 in) (h)
182 mm (7.2 in) (w)
18.6 mm (0.73 in) (d)

And the PSP 2000 is
71 mm (2.8 in) (h)
169 mm (6.7 in) (w)
19 mm (0.75 in) (d)

That's a total of 12.55mm taller and 13mm wider. Most PSP cases are going to fit this thing just fine so I doubt your pockets are even going to notice.

I game heavily on both my smartphone and tablet, and I haven't found a single game reach Uncharted or WipEout level graphics. Care to say which ones? I'd say that smartphones won't reach Vita levels for some time due to budget constraints. Vista St the moment is also the most powerful mobile device.

I think that's already on the way, if the trend with Japanese Vita games is indicative. My copy of Blazblue didn't even include a physical manual.
Yeah, most of them don't, some have a shorter version of the manual (Lord of Apocalypse, Disgaea), but Ragnarok has a real one!

It obviously differs from person to person. Personally, experiencing something like Uncharted: Golden Abyss (finished it twice) on a handheld had my jaw on the floor several times. I had the same effect when I turned on the 3DS but it instantly wore off as soon as I started fiddling with the OS and the games. With the Vita, i'm constantly dropping my jaw every time I turn it on and that big gorgeous display lights up. The menus being incredibly fast and the intuitiveness of the multitasking are just icing on the cake. And this is coming from an iOS gamer (iPad 2 + iPhone 4S). So yeah, I heartily disagree with you on that.

This. It appears people are getting caught up in how big the screen is and think the system is that much bigger, when it's not.

You finished U:GA twice? I've got the game, just waiting for my Vita. I noticed on the back of the case it used the rear camera. What for? Or is that too spoilery?

For some of the charcoal rubbings you have to point it towards the sun or a light source, no?

Yeah, great game. Only camera i've seen is the in-game one Nate uses to uncover clues/mysteries with. I think it might be referring to this one little part where you (VERY MINOR GAMEPLAY SPOILER)
have to use a light source to solve a puzzle.

EDIT: Takao'd.

No consideration for the back touch screen or the analogs? It's those in combination to the increased size that are the problem.

And are we not allowed to say the Vita is too large for pockets? I don't carry my iPad in my pockets but that doesn't stop me from taking it out. It didn't stop me from buying it.

I have a suspicion that you actually need more light in the front cam than the rear one. I seem to remember reading about people trying with the rear and it taking ages to work compared to the front.

It makes sense if that is the case. If I want to read a book in a cave I don't hold my torch behind my book.

I just used my iPhone's flash on the rear camera and boom.

Shit. That sounds like a great use of the camera.

I'm so hyped. A week and a half away!!!

You seemed to be talking more about its size than any considerations for the sticks or the rear screen as was the poster you quoted. While I can understand any objections over the sticks I'm honestly not sure what the back touch has to do with it going in a pocket. From a size point of view on it's own it's just as viable for your pocket as any pre Go PSP.

As for saying it's too large go pockets that's fine, I'm not sure why you would think it wasn't allowed. It's to large for my pockets and so is a PSP and a DS and a 3DS and pretty much every other handheld console ever made. But then I didn't say that a PSP and 3DS fit in my pockets comfortably after previously saying that the Vita will never be in a pocket with no reference other than size being used.

I wasn't trying to start an argument, just to point out that the screen on the Vita makes the device look larger than it actually is.

If it's Sony and has an online mode it has an Online Pass.

The existence of that piece of paper pretty much means there's zero way Modnation Racer will get an infrastructure later on. How will they mail the online pass to people post-patch???

Total failure Sony. If you cannot even bother with your own 1st party, why would 3rd parties follow?

If the source of light is artificial it has to be stronger to work - I think some of them were on an airplane while playing and had problems finding a decent light source. iPhone's flash is pretty strong, thus there were no problems.

While I wouldn't count on it, I guess it's possible they make an "exception" BECAUSE it's incentive to keep your copy and not trade it in, ergo reducing used sales anyway. Or at least keeping fewer copies out there. Alternatively, they just sell you an online mode for $5 or $10.

And man, opening those is depressingly barren, especially since Japanese Sony titles DID have manuals, but on the plus side they actually went all the way in reducing paper rather than putting in those sheets saying they were going manual-less to be eco friendly or whatever.

EDIT: Come to think of it, intent or not seeing that sad packaging DOES make me more inclined to go digital over physical more often than not. Feels pointless to get a physical version if it's literally nothing more than wasting plastic to have a game cart, makes it only seem worthwhile on the biggest of games.

My brother has gigantic hands and had a more awkward time with it. There may be a "trick" to holding it that we didn't grasp in our 20 minutes with it (N64 trident lol).

for me, the most natural way to play Vita is by actually not holding/grabbing the Vita at all. just like with PSP, I use my middle, ring and pinkie finger as a stand. Vita rest comfortably on top of my finger. my palm are actually not touching the side of Vita, this leave my thumb in a very natural position to reach analog and face button/d-pad.

the downside is, I can't play Vita this way if I'm laying down in a bed facing up, since I need gravity to let Vita rest on top of my finger.

Finally, a list! In bold shall be mine. Holy shit that is quite a lot of games... Actually i will put off MvC3 and Ninja Gaiden. Down from 7 to 5, should be enough games. Fuck, i hope my 8GB card will fit the DD games i want -_-

The existence of that piece of paper pretty much means there's zero way Modnation Racer will get an infrastructure later on. How will they mail the online pass to people post-patch???

The devs already said they are looking at a patch for it. Just because the code isn't in the box doesn't mean they couldn't email it to every PSN account that tried to go online with it or something. Every account does have to have a valid email address after all. Since the code only needs to be tied to that PSN account it would be fine.

On the basis that even the UMDs have a unique ID (someone tried to use the UMD trade in twice with the same disk and failed) it's entirely possible that the same is true of the carts.

The first time each cart tried to go online it would be registered on their server as logging in via a specific PSN account. That account then gets an email with a code.

That's even if they bothered with an online pass for the game.

I'm actually curious to know how well tested that is. It SEEMS plausible to me that there aren't unique IDs, BUT it'll stop trying it over and over on the same IP since there's a high chance it's the same copy, or perhaps if done on the same system. Wonder if someone tested by doing it on one system at one home, then took the UMD to another's and tried again on an entirely different system/IP. That way there's only one common link, the UMD.

You can download an Online Pass from PSN/SEN.

Wow we have the EXACT SAME list :)

I'm interested in Asphalt Injection for some weird reason. At 30 bones, it'll probably do until EA gets a Need for Speed game on the Vita.

They're advertising? Sony West has done absolutely nothing towards that game so it's surprising ...

Well... Uncharted and Gravity Daze were the only two games on display and with artwork on the advertising. It didn't have it's own poster or stand like a typical AAA might, but no Vita game did.
