Is there any way to install apps from the US Marketplace in Europe? Netflix haven't released their app here yet and I fancy giving it a go.

So, what does everyone think about stylus support? Yay or Nay?

The Note has had me intrigued, and... well you're lying if you say you weren't crying when you heard the Courier was killed haha

Personally I think it's be a great addition to WP, more hardware fragmentation (while keeping software unfragmented) can only be a good thing IMO.

---

Oh, and completely unrelated: do we have any info on a) screenshot support b) custom alarm support (ie, not just for calls), and c) WPA-EAP support (the wifi used by a lot of companies/universities) ?

My main gripes with the software, hopefully we'll have them before the Armageddon hits..

I'd still get a Lumia 800 if it were available for CDMA

Thing is he never says why you should hold out. Just says you should because the 900 is coming. Spec wise there really honestly isn't a huge difference between either.

Basically get the 900 if you want an LTE device with all the speed pluses and battery minuses, and if not just chose based on screen sizes and slightly different looks. Specs are virtually identical outside of the camera.

So it's basically wait if you must have LTE or just get an 800 now. I like the blue 800 the best out any at this point anyways.

For people waiting for updates, have you tried this solution.

Updated my phone this way after Zune updates kept failing. No problems at all.

Would really like to update my Omnia to Mango. Just read that process and it still requires Zune.exe so that's a no go for me as my PC has major problems with .Net installations causing all kinds of grief with applications. I have error CLR20r3 affecting Zune, Windows Media Center, Handbrake and many other applications that just don't run. No remedies to this problem unfortunately. MS says do a clean W7 install but won't guarantee a fix for .Net conflicts. It's really frustrating because I cant use many functions on this phone like music, movies or photos. I really don't want to buy a new PC just to update a phone. It would be great if MS had a standalone updater for WP but they are so ignorant or just slow to react to customers needs I've kind of given up hope.

Gizmodo Has an interesting interview with Sam Moreau of Microsoft's design guru. There are other things about the Windows 8 design in here but there's some WP tidbits too.

Giz: Right, when I talk to people about Windows Phone, some people don't like the cutoff text or whatever. But it has a sense of vision—a really strong sense of vision—and I think that's a good thing, one way or another.

SM: Yeah, because that was the thing that we get blamed for a lot. Or, I would say the thing that annoys me about Android is I don't think it has a point of view. I think it's trying to be this weird sci-fi version of an Apple design language, poorly executed. Some of it is starting to get there, you know, they got Matias there, and some things are starting to get a little better. They're starting to get that—some sense of soul, but I do think that a lot of their soul is derived from some other place.
Metro, Metro, Metro

Giz: When you're talking about Metro, how do you take that from a phone, and put it on Xbox and Windows 8 and apply it in ways that make sense?

SM: It didn't start with the phone, it actually goes older than that. It's something we've been working on for a long time—like at least as long as I've been at the company, which is over five years. One of the things that we did—we don't talk about this as much—but we have these internal design virtual teams that go across the company, and do these things called like, Design Align. We would send groups—a designer from each of the different business divisions—to a project around common commanding or something like that, and they would come off and work on some solutions, and then we would try to bring it back into product cycles.

This is crazy. Your entire system is completely screwed and you're refusing to fix it? How would a clean install not help?

Anyway, you can always set up a virtual machine and update from that one.

I don't think copying an entire interview of that length is allowed here on GAF.

Thanks, I couldn't find anything on length but I edited it anyways. Just to be safe. I have been lurking this thread since page one and now that I am posting finally I would rather not chance it.

Nice interview. His point about Android is spot on lol

It really is. Durate can talk about airport toilet signs all the wants, but he definitely likes the metro design principles and tries to copy them without making it too obvious.

It takes days if not weeks to set up a PC just right for music production. I could list all the programs and the updates required for them to function properly but that would take ages. Specialised hardware drivers are another thing especially in regards to Yamaha ASIO drivers for legacy digital mixers and audio interfaces. The folder hierarchy for samples and midi files is another time intensive task to get right. I would basically need to purchase additional storage in the realm of at least 2TB to do what you recommend. So no - not crazy. I have zero experience with VM and no doubt that method would be fraught with trial and error. It's only .Net 3.5 which W7 says is installed and running correctly but there are no traces of it in the Registry or in Windows framework folder. All other .Net are intact - v2.0, v3.0, v4.0 and that seems to be a real headscatcher. I have tried so many methods outlined by MS to correct this fault from but nothing works.

That's a bit more useful information. Yeah, I can see how you'd want to avoid that on a production machine. But don't you have a second machine? Or couldn't borrow the notebook or Mac from someone else (parent, significant other) for an hour? It's just crazy that you're still stuck on NoDo(!).

If you have Windows 7 Professional, you can download XP Mode for free, which is a configured XP VM for Windows 7, introduced for compatibility reasons. It's pretty easy to install and use.

Hey man - many thanks for the links. My Toshiba laptop bricked itself a while back via overheating GPU one month after warranty expiration which was my general use PC. My partner has an old BenQ laptop running XP but she doesn't want me to be using that for synching media and what not so cross that out too which is understandable. The PC I am currently using runs on vanilla W7 so can't use XP Mode. I think my only option is to buy a new laptop, maybe a cheap netbook but I have been holding off for a W8 tablet to replace that broken laptop mentioned above. I have resigned myself to just watching from the sidelines for now which is a shitty way to go. Can I partition a new W7 install with my current version of W7(same install disc and validation code)? That might be a way I can isolate general purpose computing away from the production stuff. Thoughts?

the Virtual PC software works on Windows 7 Home. Just select Pro from the drop down and it will give you the links. It works fine.

If you need a copy of XP/Vista/7 you can download it from Microsoft here. They're for testing IE but it's a full version that works for about 6 months. Or if you have an install disc for 7 around you can keep rearming it and use it for 120 days.

i guess he is really good at hiding it since the only thing you can remotely say is metro-like is the market. Which else? Android is moving more towards webos (which, when its creator is the main designer at Google is somewhat expected) which was around before WP7

I have the rapidly aging HTC Trophy because it was the only Windows phone available through Verizon. Best phone I have ever owned, bar none. I love Mango.

Perhaps he is speaking about the panoramic and pivot type controls that ICS has?

I think he's referring to the horizontal tab swiping that's present in apps such as People.

I use ICS everyday. Its ludicrous to say horizontal swiping is "Metro". If thats the only criteria then the argument is idiotic. The market has a visual style that i would say is much more Metro with the block icons, etc. but horizontal swiping wasn't invented by Microsoft.

I am considering waiting for WP8 before upgrading my phone, but cot dam, a white Lumia 900/910 might be too tempting.

Don't think I'm going to go with Samsung again. I love the screen, and my Focus in general, but the build quality just seems so iffy. About to get my second replacement via insurance. I dropped the phone, flat on its back, onto gravel from a few feet, and weeks later it starts acting crazy.

Now this year, my power button is getting faulty (I guess from overuse?) so my phone can randomly turn off because the button "sticks". Worse, shortly after this started happening, I cracked my screen (my fault), so if I take it in to be replaced, it'll look like I dropped it.

HTC or Nokia look to have the best build quality ATM.

When you pair the horizontal swiping with the new people "hub", I think it's a fair comparison to make. And really, not many people would care if Duarte hadn't gone out of his way to call out metro as bathroom signage. Android still has a long way to go before it's designers can talk shit about wp7 and ios.

Could be the rumored N8 successor, Symbian's last hurrah. Nokia 801 or something like that.

That could be it, Nokia likes seeing things through and the N8 has had it's successor rumored for years.

Even with that in consideration I would put an arbitrary 90% likeliness of it being a Windows Phone.

Doesn't seem like the proper time to reveal a "high end" device, since the Lumia 900 will be just weeks away from release. There isn't too much they can do beyond the Lumia 900 as well, until Apollo comes out. I guess they could always release something with a crazy camera.

If it's WP7, I'm hoping for a Verizon exclusive device.

I want something to come to T-Mobile in June.

Ive been using a Dell Venue Pro for the past 5 months and I like it, but with an Otterbox its is TOOO FUCKING BULKY. So, I have been caseless. It did experience a nice 10 foot dive into concrete and it experienced some kinks on the chrome and a really tiny chip in the gorilla glass, but no break.

I miss/don't miss having an android phone though. I miss always screwing with it and what not, but I always the felt the performance and fluidity was second class to iOS or WP. I also hated how I was never statisfied with my start screen.

Lumia 900. In White. T-Mobile. Stat.

They need to announce something in the high end for the european market.

Probably a 900 with a better camera instead of the LTE chip?

I don't think that they will release something symbian now, as they have success with wp.

I really hope that Apollo comes out this year, those rumors of it being released in 2013 make me sick to my stomach. Widows Phone is by FAR the best UI that I have used on a mobile device and I think MS would be sabotaging itself not to have a major update this year.

I want this oh so very badly. I was this close to buying a Samsung Focus on Craigslist for $165 but I've waited this long... Didn't want to get a 1.5 year old phone now.

Edit:
So, of course, I pushed the staff for details. They stated rather factually that I could request white or black Lumia 900 hardware which they expect to release in the second half of March, after the 15th.
