The things I get myself into...

The Law of Ueki 1

cXxoS.jpg

This first episode starts with what I assume is a far flash-forward, of the sort shows do when they want to make it clear that things get crazy down the line, so be sure to stick around! Unfortunately, what they do here is not a compelling hook. We see two people fighting in some abstract arena, doing those things battle shounen characters do: yelling, waving their hands, making big shit happen. But there's no clear stakes involved or a palpable sense of danger or any reason to care about these characters when they shout, "I need more power!"

This continues into the main story of the episode itself. The introduction of our main characters - the rough protagonist, the nagging girl friend - is clumsy and tends to rely more on exposition than showing what their normal lives are like. This is a problem when the main character is a student who has been plucked out of his normal life into a crazy world of battles - without any sense of who he is and why we should care about him, he's just some kid who throws trees around. The one who did this plucking is an older man I can only assume is a teacher, even though he does no teaching, who sits us down and tells us he is a candidate for the Celestial King - whatever that is - and so he has to choose a junior high school student to battle against all the junior high school students the other candidates have selected, and the student who survives until the end gets his sponsor selected as King. This is one of the worst methods of determining a ruler I've ever seen.

Our villain of the week is an evil doctor who puts the over-the-top cruelty of the villains in Hell Girl to shame. As the narration tells us, he did horrible things to a little boy's mother, causing the boy to lash back by pouring excrement on the doctor's car. This causes the doctor to chase after the boy, send his monstrous black-suited goons to beat him up, whip him, chain him up, and try to run him over with three cars, one of them with monstrous drill that rises out of the hood. What a drama queen!

I have considerable issues with the art direction of this show. The color choices are garish - the bright neon green of the screenshot above hurts my eyes. It reminds me of Rinne, only incompetent. The character designs are rough, unpolished, and inconsistently drawn. When your first episode looks cheap, that doesn't bode well for the rest of the show, especially a long-running show. Not that I would have expected better from modern DEEN.

This is going to be tough.

[Dennou Coil]

This show is so much better than anything currently airing this season, with the possible exception of
Natsume
.

It's also better than everything that aired last year. It's freaking Dennou Coil after all!

Phantasos is my favorite God of sleep, and that's not just because he's voiced by Rie Kugimiya. Always loved the "YOU KILLED MY BEAUTY!" breakdowns.

While we're on the subject, 4 Gods of sleep>3 Judges purely for the fact that they can
COMBINE!

El Cid is a cool dude. Armless Excalibur ftw.

I took a week off of anime. So much to catch up on.

Nisemonogatari 05:

I've tolerated the fanservice better than most people here have, but it's hitting me that we're almost at the halfway point and virtually nothing of consequence has happened. I don't know if the increase in ecchi content is entirely to blame for this, but it's absolutely a factor and it's getting old. Koyomi has become a terrible caricature of himself, the harem has collectively done jack shit other than being fondled or indecently exposed, and Karen & Tsukihi have largely stayed in the background even though the story is supposedly about them. Everything feels directionless and completely ignorant of what made Bake enjoyable in the first place.

Smile Precure 01:

Completely one-dimensional characters? Furry villains? A first episode stolen from Heartcatch with baddies stolen from Suite? Short transformation sequences that use a
compact
even though the theme of the series appears to be
books
? Eh, I'll still watch.

Yuri Declaration of Your Heart 05:

And the winner for best-dressed goes to
Kotetsu......whatever his name is
. I suspected that
Muginami
was some kind of
enemy mole
, and this confirmed that.
She also has a really shitty brother, though I can forgive him because he's so impossibly well-dressed.
A lot went down this episode and it gave us the most meaningful backstory and advancement that we've seen thus far in the series; I just hope that
Lan and Mugi's enmity
is short-lived so we can return to the usual fun character interaction. Also, TONS of MARU! this episode, though whole arm MARU! > wrist MARU!. Madoka needs to use it sparingly, lest it lose its potency.

Maru is a way of life. Also regarding
Space Kotetsu... I don't think it's her real brother, just someone who she's affiliated with in Kiss, especially considering that he's royalty (in some fashion in past and present) and she is not.

You're probably right, barring some future plot point about Mugi being the illegitimate child of the King of Kiss and doing all of this Vox-related espionage to win onii-chan's affections. If Mugi and Kotetsu are unrelated and have a strictly military relationship I'm surprised that she'd address him so informally, but who am I to question the ways of aliens?

Kotetsu
's attitude toward the validity of
Mugi's service to Kiss
also struck me as......rather simplistic, to say the least. If direct service in battle is all that matters to him, he'd better
get back to his ship
and kick the asses of any cooks, medics, maintenance crew, and other comfortable, coddled non-combat officers he has.
Mugi wouldn't be a very good spy if she was going around slaughtering her foes instead of, y'know, winning enemy trust by making delicious breakfasts.

[Gintama 120-140]

I actually haven't really enjoyed any of these particular 'serious arcs', hopefully it picks up again soon (by which I mean 'plays to my own peculiar tastes').

Those are the episodes with the "stand" and "dragon island" arcs, right? The ones that tried to mix comedy with serious stories... I was really not fond of them. It was probably the lowest point of the show to me.

Didn't Mugi specifically mention that
she and her "brother" were not actually blood related
or did I imagine that?

You didn't imagine it, or at least I imagined it too then. I'm pretty sure it's going to turn out that
the brother was being an ass in some sort of effort to keep Mugi away and protect her.

I have considerable issues with the art direction of this show.

Bing bing bing! We have a winner! You win the Hiroshi Watanabe Award For Weird Studio DEEN Direction!

Next you should watch Suteki Tantei Labyrinth or Shining Tears X Wind or something :p

This is going to be tough.

Why, dare I ask, are you watching Ueki? It's hardly in the upper echelon of shounen fight shows.

Also Muginami says something
like "Though we're not related, he's my brother!" or something like that
once the cafe scene at the end happens when she first sees him.

From what it seems,
Space Kotetsu's reaction made it seem to me that Muginami acted on her own volition in this situation, and that she wasn't even a spy, but just someone who overheard something and acted on her own to try and save face, which, obviously turned out to be an insult to those who worked hard in their organization.
That's how I took it anyways.

Also Muginami says in this episode at the cafe scene something like
"We're not related, but he's still my brother!"

I actually think he would rather
she be dead.

dakkumauji's post prompted me to pick up where i left off - Zan Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei 05

Call me Papa - 05

The show just never recovered from the start, and the club president exceeds the mere creepy fat lolicon trope by far!

I'm not going to dispute any of this, as, thinking back, I was 3/4ths asleep from a medication side-effect when I tried to watch this. I'm going to give it another watch tonight before I say anything else that's blatantly wrong.

Why, dare I ask, are you watching Ueki? It's hardly in the upper echelon of shounen fight shows.

There are reasons that can not yet be revealed. Let's just say I am the master of this particular "event" that will divide the denizens of animegaf. There will be betrayal, romance, action, and other things.

Also, I disagree. Ueki has some very in-depth strategic battles later on. I would put it in high tier once the
second half of the tournament begins.
Though I am a bit biased since I love tournaments and this has one of the better ones in the genre IMO. Not quite up there with Flame of Recca or Yu Yu Hakusho, but it's good.

Oh for sure. It's all good!

Trying to listen with your heart when you can't focus on the subtitles rarely works out for the best!

Rewatching the episode just means that I get to see all that Muginami over again, so fine with me.

I'll give this show credit for one thing: it's not afraid to engage in daringly juvenile humor.

I don't know if it was losing his "talent to study" or what, but Ueki is one of the dimmest protagonists I've seen. He seems to stumble through life while barely paying any attention to what's going on around him. I guess that's supposed to make his flashes of cleverness more impressive, but it only succeeds in making me want to punch his face.

About those flashes of cleverness -
I've heard of "chestnuts roasting on an open fire", but would they really pop out of a chestnut tree like that?

And, suddenly heroic double agents? Sensei saving gymnastics?
Back to norm I guess, which wasn't bad. Just a bunch of text referencing everything everywhere that only appears for a frame.

Lagrange 05: I Actually Understood It Because I'm Off My Meds Edition:

Confirmed, Thoraxes' interpretation of
Fabulous Space Kotetsu
's reasons for
rejecting Muginami
are correct. It's amazing how different the scene is when I'm actually awake enough to pay attention to the subtitles.

I also forgot to mention just how great
srsbns Mugi (http://i.imgur.com/JtsVd.jpg)
is.

Looks like a classic example of Popeye arms to me.

I immediately thought of Franky from One Piece, but then realized that he actually was partially based on Popeye, so yeah, Popeye arms.

I don't know, but it somehow looks better to me than the original manga art.

Some needed explanations. If those fuckers didn't dangle the mystery carrot in front of a dude who loves reading horror and mystery books, maybe they'd skip the whole people dieing thing!

lol at ueki impressions, well am not saying that it's great but it does pick up later when the fights are more about
strategy(robert 10 arc) but then drops back down later.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi 06
DTwr6.jpg

I was a little worried about this episode after I saw the preview last week. The show has been on a roll, but this is Natsume delving pretty deeply into the crazy supernatural stuff. The first half of the episode felt fairly slow, but everything was smartly done for the most part, and it might have been that slow easing in that opened me up more to the bottle idea that's central to the episode. There's some interesting human and youkai interaction that's opened up here, and it isn't really contained to something that just effects Natsume for once. Looking forward to seeing where the show takes things, but this was an acceptable and enjoyable building block episode.

The Law of Ueki 4

3D1ZY.jpg

With a ruler like this, it's no wonder the process of choosing his successor is so stupid. I do have to wonder what he's supposed to be ruling. Is it Earth, as some lines seem to indicate? Is it some other planet or dimension filled with these Celestials? Either way, the only responsibilities he seems to have are making out with the ladies and laughing at this dumb contest.

The change in setting from the teacher's house at day to an open field at night across the mid-episode break was jarring. At least throw in a line of dialogue to help us make sense of the transition, please. The field Ueki and his challenger end up fighting in looks pretty weird:

NJeVO.jpg

The grass, rocks, trees, and sky all look like they were cut out from different sources and pasted together. They don't mix well.

Anyway, they fought. And there was a backstory. And there was shamelessly reused animation during the fight sequence. I look forward to the next formula, er, episode.

Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 7
QZwfZ.jpg

The stuff of nightmares.
That was an amazingly enjoyable episode. With the Mahou Shoujo opening, the cooking segment, How to draw Zetsubou Sensei, and the at least six different types of animation, Shaft really went all out this episode.

The good news is that this was the greatest episode of SZS and it is perfect in every way possible.
The bad news is that this was the greatest episode of SZS and none of the subsequent ones will ever reach that level again :(

Law of Ueki: 4

I'm getting used to them not giving a fuck about anything, but notice the switch in atmosphere/setting from the first pic to the second that was taken only seconds later, that's a new level of it. But I can say that, as broken as the rules have been, the fights have become interesting, and I'm starting to find an enjoyment in it other than irony. Ueki plays dim, but he's not dull.

I could have told you guys not to watch Law of Ueki. Too late, I guess.

Did someone lose a bet or something?

The Law of Ueki 5

This episode looked cheap even by the standards of this show.

bErNm.jpg

No, his leg isn't supposed to be cut off here.

Ncpja.jpg

This is a particularly puzzling example. This is supposed to be the onset of evening, as the awkwardly cut in cicadas tell us, so I assume this color scheme is supposed to be indicative of twilight. The red coloring is understandable, if poorly executed, but why does Ai turn green? The two colors clash horribly with each other.

Otherwise, the ending of the fight that carried over from last episode was anticlimactic. I guess they have to make sure the big enemies can come back later. Gintama did the hip-hop parody better. And it's getting annoying how everyone's powers are variations of "turn X into Y". Turning coins into wind is kind of crazy, but I'd like a little more creativity than picking two unrelated things out of a hat.

hip2.jpg
hp3.jpg

Law of Ueki: 5

Yo. Yo. Yo. I feel like I've seen a million hip-hop parodies recently, and it's getting even sillier than it already is. I'm surprised to see them introduce the Haydn, the supposed badass so early, but that only means that he, or someone higher up is going to call the fight a quit.

I wonder what that's like. Being forced via peer pressure to watch a DEEN show? Harsh.

For Cosmic and glory.

Penguindrum 2

Kam and Shouma are hilarious as well as their two penguin partners. The episode was pretty gripping even if Ringo was unappealing and
creepy. Penguindrum is future diary? nice.
I like the animation style for running and how flashbacks are handle and funny signs.

SteinsGate 15/16

Suzuha's fate and subsequent father revelation and death was touching and shocking. So glad Mayuri was spared

Tiger & Bunny 15/16

Loss of powers for Kotetsu is an interesting plot change while revealing Yuri/Lunatic is related to Legend is cool. Starting to like Yuri, himself, pretty cool.

The Law of Ueki 6

U0djM.jpg

This show's fixation on the color green is unhealthy.

Aside from the wonky visual direction and awkward mixture of the comedic with the serious, this episode was actually kind of OK. We got a little fleshing out of the backstory of Ueki and the teacher's relationship, which gave the events of the present a certain amount of emotional impact. The ending was rather weird though; I have no idea how the narrative is going to take things from here.

Tenchi Muyo Ryo Ohki 7

Nothing like some old school wacky harem hijinks. Ayeka should just give up already because it's kinda sad how she thinks she's any sort of competition to Ryoko.

Tenchi Muyo Ryo Ohki 8

This was a pretty boring episode. Babies are always annoying jerks and this one was no exception but luckily Washu kinda made it work somehow.

And what's the deal with Sasami? She's been acting rather ominous for a while now.
