Also, political correctness has gone too far. One small incident happens and a million mothers dial the governor and media stations demanding apologies. Oh, but it is completely O.K to dress little girls in skanky outfits and make them walk on runways.

I am just getting frustrated at how there is a dozen different organizations dedicated to censoring things that might offend people. I demand an R rating for Prometheus D:<

This M.I.A incident at the super bowl is the most recent example. Dancers in panties are doing pelvic thrusts, but no one minds that. The moment she flips the camera, all hell breaks loose.

Although i completely agree you have to understand superbowl is something families watch, i for one wouldn't want my 5 year old kid seeing a tit slip or someone flipping off the camera.

When you have kids you will understand, not all parents are shit heads who let their kids watch R rated films and be racist little brats on xbox live.

The real question is what racist white jokes actually exist. I'm being serious here, as I've never in my life heard one and would really like to know.

Well my friends don't really crack racial jokes so I may not be hip to anything new, but I'd imagine the old white people/black people comedy routine is what he is referring to.(?)

Corny, can't dance, mayo, scared of minorities, extreme sports. Also, with serial killers there's the joke that they are assumed to be white etc. Stuff like that.

I agree, too many whiny pussies today who cry over anything. It drives me nuts sometimes.

Poor you.

When I was a teen working my first job, I worked with a young black teenager and our boss was an older redneck type. The black kid (whose race is relevant in this story and whose name I don't remember so sorry :) ) used to ask the redneck to tell him racist jokes, because he'd never heard any.

They would actually have a good time playing this game. One day I was like, "Hey man, tell me some white people jokes." and the kid said, "We don't really have any. You guys are greedy, but thats not really funny, it's just a fact"

:D

I agree. The last time I said something along the lines of this, I got banned a whole good 3 months by a moderator.

All I will say is people are extremely sensitive from what I've notice.

People cry / bitch / whine etc... About anything nowdays.

So much meta-whining, but so few substantive examples. What do people get upset about "these days" that you feel is unjustified? Why do you feel their responses are unwarranted?

Genuinely curious, how does one even come to this conclusion? He claims society is too PC and there is a double-standard (comically singling out one Asian country) and I want some clarification. Last I checked ethnic jokes get made all the time about all 'races'. But there are certain places you can't cross that line obviously. Does he honestly think blacks and Chinese people (lol) can say racist jokes at work/school etc with impunity? Enquiring minds want to know

I have no idea. It's not a problem for me.

The thing that got me going was the way you dismissed him - "oh oppressed one". Are you telling me that him being white and complaining had nothing to do with your choice of words there? If so i apologise for misreading you.

I think you're all fat.

I think a major reason why people are so sensitive these days is that media outlets like to shove the ideal look into people's faces, like you're not cool unless you own an Apple product, you need to have clothes of a certain style, and that tiny amount of flab that hangs on your lower stomach won't get you any girlfriends. It's a lot of peer pressure and high expectations taken to a ridiculous degree. And I myself fall for all those traps. :D

I'd say watching dudes tackle the living shit out of each other and seeing people get their ACL/MCL torn is a lot worse than someone doing a 0.5 second flip off to the camera. Neither will turn a child into some deranged lunatic.

My personal favorite are accusations of misogyny whenever a female is criticized with a word like "bitch" but the same people don't care if a guy is insulted with similar word for their gender "dick" or middle of the road "asshole/dbag".

Also people sensitive to the word fat. Guess what fat/obese are not insults they are statements of reality.

Also racial humor can be hilarious without being racist, but zomg he recognized guy/gal was race X what a dirtbag!

To be fair, "dick," "asshole," and "douchebag" are currently unisex in their usage.

I don't know what color he is. I'm at work and my avis are turned off. Oppressed in the sense of, "I can't say anything because everyone is too darn sensitive myah!". Doesn't matter though, he doesn't seem to be returning.

Dick is as much as a male insult as bitch is a female insult. They are used for both genders but to be offended by one but not the other is disingenuous at best.

I don't know. I think sometimes that people are a little eager to exercise their righteous indignation at anything and everything that can be perceived as a slight. However, I do think there is something else at play. Namely -- particularly in the public discourse -- people don't really know the person in question and what they stand for You're not among your friends who know that you're not prejudiced, so it's okay to use (insert slur here). Is the woman in question exhibiting behavior that might seem appropriately labeled as bitchy, or is the person eager to loft that term at practically any woman? Sometimes, pithy "what a bitch" comments don't really establish where you're coming from, and whether or not there is malice for the gender as a whole.

This can often be exacerbated when -- if called out -- the person doubles down on keeping it real and refuses to acknowledge why there are some circumstances where what was said can and should be criticized. Yes, maybe some people are oversensitive, but a lot of times the reaction is "oh, what, I can't call a woman who's being a bitch out for being a bitch. Fucking' PC America!" Yeah, that really does little to assuage concerns about empathy that some people who aren't you aren't always a fan of the term.

Furthermore, I think the whole fat thing is kind of misunderstood as well. I don't think the issue is that you're not allowed to point out that an obese person is, in fact, obese. I think some frown on constantly going to the well as though it's always okay to deride and make fun of fat people for being fat.

Except in many cases jokes about races other than white people tend to be overly negative, almost to the point of racist. ie Why are black people good at basketball? Because they can shoot, steal, and run.

The problem is not that people are too easily offended. The problem is that we care that they're offended.

On the subject of this, I wished that all countries adopted the rating system from Sweden.

We have 3, 7, 11 and 15, and if you're 7 you can see a movie rated 11 if you have a parent with you etc etc.

Alot of movies that are PG-13 get 15 here if they contain disturbing conent or violence, while we don't really care about language or sexuality.

I think a worldwide system like this would really benefit the movie-industry.

Now I'm done Semi-off-topicing.

Canada man, if you're 14 you can pretty much watch everything but the worst of the worst.

I find that people confuse being PC with common courtesy.

They are ALMOST the same thing. That's why the people who feign being so oppressed and annoyed by it (which is almost never substantiated) tend to be fucking assholes who just wan't to say whatever they want, and not have to suffer through other people using that same right and expressing how that shit makes them feel.

Soooo, with your example in the OP, should people have been offended by the pelvic thrusting? Isn't the fact that people were ok with it an example of people getting less offended over time?

I don't have a problem with the "don't call black people niggers" aspect of political correctness.

I DO have a problem with Juan Williams being fired over relatively innocuous comments, or mediocre works of art being held up simply because they were made by somebody of minority or oppressed status (which I've seen happen ALL THE TIME in my English department and in the humanities more generally).

Political correctness has done some good in the world, but it's also done plenty of ill.

Agree 100% but that's why I leave it to the George Carlin's and the Dave Chapelle's.

These sensitive people are usually those who are not happy with their life, drama queens, or after a quick buck from a lawsuit most (all?) of the time.

Uhh to...not be a whiny pussy anymore? Stop being offended or even caring what anyone else does or says? It's pretty simple.

Let's define our terms first - What makes someone a whiny, easily offended pussy, as opposed to a person with a legitimate reason to be offended?

OP, your thesis is that people are too sensitive, but all your evidence is for people being sensitive to some things and not others. It's inconsistency, not oversensitivity.

C-

Uhh to...not be a whiny pussy anymore? Stop being offended or even caring what anyone else does or says? It's pretty simple.

This would require a fundamental shift in human nature.

Also, what Orayn said.

Which sensitive people are you talking about? The ones in the Op, or the ones that this thread has inevitably devolved into?

I love when people who demand less political correctness actually are trying to say "I want to talk shit about other races, religions, and women".

Both of my parents are employees of National Public Radio. Juan Williams' axing was not simply because of that one comment. He was a notorious sexual harasser and misogynist, and several times before he would have been fired if not for other employees (including my dad) defending him. The comment about Muslims and airplanes was, if anything, the last straw.
