I've had pretty good luck with team thus far. 13-3 wins as a newcomer to DOTA, not bad :)

Windrunner has been my 'main' character as of late and i really like her short cooldowns, long range and survivability. Last match i was able to hold my own in a lane against Lina and Tidehunter, even getting first blood and not dying myself. Not a fan of her ulti ability tho. As far as i can see, it's completely useless. It's a bit of a bummer when one of the four abilities is not worth putting points on.

At this point the most important thing Valve has to nail for this game to be fun is matchmaking. Even matches are so much fun. Completely dominating a match is boring and being dominated is frustrating.

One balance change i'd like to see is the ability to win faster if one team is dominating. It's not fun to be destined to lose with no change of coming back for like 15-20mins.

Her ult is amazing for pushing towers. It's also great for 1 v 1's against heroes who rely on auto attacking. Pop windrunner and r them and you can win easily.
 
Yesterday I played lich king and someone told me to ward like crazy but it didn't look like he had a move named ward. What are wards?

Basically, Lich is a support, and he is not as item-dependent as other heroes, so he should be doing things like placing Observer Wards and Sentry Wards. You can buy those from the shop, they are 200 gold for a pack of 2. You only can buy 1 pack every 6 minutes. You place the wards, usually warding near the runes is a good idea early on, but there are plenty of other useful locations as well.

Observer Wards - Provide sight in the fog in an area.
Sentry Wards - Provide True Sight and ONLY true sight. This means that if there is fog around the ward, you cannot see through it, however if a Riki walks next to it, you CAN see him!

There are warding guides with pics out there. There was a really good fancy flash one for Heroes of Newerth (which the map is the same for purposes of this), but I can't find it at the moment.

Are runes towers?

Are the recommded items good? Items are one of the most confusing parts of this game. There's like100 of them, some are built using other items, there are little donkeys, there is a secret shop, its just so much.

Nope, those are the things you hear people getting and it always goes "DIIIIIIIIING! REGENERATION!" Or it says Haste, or Invisibility, or Double Damage. They spawn at the shining spots in the top and bottom of the river.

They're decent, but not great. Sebulon3k regularly uploads his builds for all the heroes, which work pretty well. The donkeys are the couriers, use them! Set a hotkey for the courier, and mess with it in practice and learn how it works and what it's abilities are.
 
I've found a few guys I like a lot but I'm still going mostly random. I ended up with Spectre earlier. Is he one of those "high level guys dominate with him" types or is he just abject shit, which was my experience.
 
^ with Spectre, you gotta farm like crazy. Great in the end-game.

And TobiWan sure has a set of pipes on him, holy shit. Good game between Ariana and Dignitas..

I smell incoming drama. One of the Germans is having connections troubles, they've been pausing the games a few times in the last minutes and now are waiting for him to reboot his PC. Trouble is, Steam servers are down for some reason and he'll probably not be able to reconnect.

edit: Ah, just remembered that the servers save the game state every few minutes now. They should be able to load the saved game once the servers are back up. Drama (probably) averted.

Read the op, has loads of links and stuff better to read in on the websites then in shop during games. You can also mess about in a private hosted game against bots and have cheats on and max your gold and level to try out items etc.
 
I just ran into the single most pleasant random Pudge I've ever seen, and for the first time ever I felt like adding a random to my steam friends list. Steam servers down. Balls.

Just check your match history and you can add people then still.

Watched a lot of games today. That game the Chinese threw away was amazing. Sucks about their lag :(

Hope steam comes back up soon, so they can continue this match. They had such a good push going on at bot lane. T3 tower at like 5 mins.
 
Most older players use screen slide, since it's pretty common in RTS.

I myself use WASD for camera as well. 123(45 for doom) for abilities - R for ulti

QEFG etc for items. I've seen a lot of people say they use WASD in this thread. But it also has a lot of haters. Just do what you feel like. I'm just used to FPS's and move fast with WASD for cam controls so I can focus my mouse on other things.

What I use is WASD for Camera, 1234 for the normal abilities, ER for abilities 5/6, F1-F6 for Items (With the F key also bound to item slot 6), ZXC for control groups 123, Space to select self, Tab for 'select all other units", Q for Deny, H for courier, mouse 3 for voice chat it game, mouse 4 for mumble voice chat, Scroll Lock for Pause (Won't let me bind it to the pause button :/), and a few random keys on the num pad to toggle on some range finders.

I think thats it.


Anther thing I have seen some people do is bind ZXCV for the abilities, and have items as QWEASD.

Isn't it auto-bound to pause? Or is that only GoldSRC games and not Source games?
 
Still don't see the need to control the camera with WASD, also dislike the idea of controlling abilites, items, and the camera with the one hand.

It's funny because I use WASD cameras because I don't want to control the camera and aiming with one hand.

I wonder if this is a schism between traditional RTS players and those who aren't.
 
My bet is the reason people prefer aiming on the mouse and movement on the keyboard is being use to First Person Shooters.
 
Grew up on Age of Empires I and II, played III and one of my favourite games is Company of Heroes. It's completely foreign to me to use the keyboard to control the camera. I need to be able to jump around the map with my view at a second's notice, and wasd doesn't really give me that flexibility.

Why? All my items and abilities are still in reach and I never miss anything. As long as they are in easy reach they are good hotkeys, and there are plenty. Don't see the problem.

Only RTS I use WASD for the camera are the Total War games. For some people they just want to pan the camera with WASD since it's easier for them. I came from playing a bunch of RTSes including DotA in WC3, so I am just used to using the mouse to pan with (or mousewheel and dragging). If anything else I can always use the arrow keys if I have to.

Test it. It's faster to have direct control on camera and you can control your character at the same time. Having camera controls binded does not prevent also scrolling the screen with mouse when you have your cursor already pointed at the edge of the screen or using minimap to hop around. Both = awesome :)
