Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

This game has been in closed beta for quite a while. Do people in the beta think it's in a shippable form at the moment or are there a lot of things that still need fixing?
Nope, still needs a lot of the match features, alternative modes, bug fixes etc. Although if they shipped it without all the heroes it'd at least give them a steady stream of content to work on for a while. How often does Icefrog release new heroes / versions, wonder if he'll increase the rate of release now that he has a bigger team working with him.
Anyone point me in the direction of Sebulon3k's latest item build file/list? ..or any other suggested ones too.
I'll Update them and post them in a little bit, some of them weren't really that good, found myself deviating a lot.

Test it. It's faster to have direct control on camera and you can control your character at the same time. Having camera controls binded does not prevent also scrolling the screen with mouse when you have your cursor already pointed at the edge of the screen or using minimap to hop around. Both = awesome :)

This, you can still use your mouse as well, it's not like it breaks.

But if you are used to your old controls you will make mistakes during a game I think. I'm used to WASD camera and my own controls, if I switch now it will take a while to get used too.

I can totally see why new players want to use WASD for the camera and I think new players should test both styles out to see what they think is better for them. One of them will have slightly faster targeting and the other more(/easier?) hotkeys. But I think that those that haved played a lot of dota and rts games will prefer the mouse since it's what they are used too. I even have a hard time trying out non-legacy key bindings (except for invoker) :p

Download Link for item builds

Again some things to keep in mind if your going to use these, I don't like clutter, so I removed 1 Iron branch and 1 Mana pot from the list of items for heroes that go that build, just buy 2 Iron branches and 2 Mana pots at the start, or you can buy a stats item, do whatever suits the line-up you have and the line-up your facing.

Also if the hero has a bottle in starting items, it doesn't mean buy bottle right away, it just means it's a hero I usually only play if I can get mid, buy the other starting items, then buy bottle when you have enough gold, if you follow what I put in the suggested, you'll have 307 left over gold, can spend it on stat items or just use it to get your bottle later, sometimes I like to go for fast bottle on some heroes that don't rely on Auto Attacks to CS in lane (Shadow Shaman). It's up to you and your ability though.

Adapt the Core / Luxuries depending on what your facing, generally the Core is universal but there may be situations where you need to go for Luxury first.

Edit
- Milkman hates my DPS DK build, HoTD, Asaault Cuirass, BKB, Daedalus, but I like to play him like a Physical DPS carry, if you want to go the Chinese way, get a Vanguard and Pipe, I think is what they get.
- Death Prophet is another hero that some people have issues with, I like to build her tanky so she can live through the entirety of her ultimate, so may wanna deviate from the Vanguard / Pipe / Shiva's route if you wanna go Cyclone or however else people build her.

Swag's suggested item builds:
1)branch branch branch salve

2)SCEPTER

3)power treads

Valve's suggested item builds:
1) salve tango tango clarity clarity clarity branch

2) MAGIC WAND

3) bracer bracer

4) power treads

5) PLETHORA OF A BUNCH OF ITEMS THAT DON'T WORK

6) rapier.

My conclusion? Be like water, especially when it comes to item builds

I just needed to check WR and saw that you put in meka and force staff there. I don't understand why they aren't in the original recommended item list since they are almost always picked up on her :p

Yes there are too many people going for the recommended item list, I especially hate that orchid is a "core item" for clinkz, its not a bad item but for 4k you can get a ring of quila, wand, medallion instead and save up for a mkb/bkb or something. Every clinkz I see in pubs never use the silence and the stats for the gold are kind of bad for him.

He dont need the mana/mana reg or the attack speed very much, 30 damage for 4k is not worth it.

Think that I'm going to use this one, thanks!

Alot of people seem to go for an offensive WR unlike the more support-oriented WR we usually see in competitive games.

waddafuck.

Death pact is a hefty mana cost, windwalk is a hefty mana cost, strafe is a hefty mana cost, and his orbs cost, guess what? mana. And with those shitty items that you just mentioned, any support with an escape mech/stun will be able to survive against clinkz. You get orchid for heroes like wr, lion, vs, cm, es, and a motley of supports that without orchid would be able to say: CYA CYA CYA and get away. And not wanting more AS on a ganker that relies on his autoattacks? ok.

@Deadly:
Semi-carry WR is fine and dandy, but force does the job well, providing her with AS, 20 dmg, and mobility. The lack of either force or mek isn't so much as a conscious decision to be an offensive wr so much as having never played wr before.

Both work, but I usually don't play WR in that role, so I didn't put it in there. I tend to support so lots of the item choices reflect that. I once tried to go Daedalus, Skadi, Sheep WR and I kept dying because it didn't have the survivability of Mek, Force Staff WR, maybe Force Staff is just necessary on her regardless of what your trying to go for.

Grew up on Age of Empires I and II, played III and one of my favourite games is Company of Heroes. It's completely foreign to me to use the keyboard to control the camera. I need to be able to jump around the map with my view at a second's notice, and wasd doesn't really give me that flexibility.

Yes it does. The dragging of the mouse is only moves the camera in 8 directions, and the screen moves just as fast holding it all the way to the left as it does holding the left key bind. The only way you can move the map even faster is the minimap, which you have to use the mouse for.

There are personal preferences, but moving the map with the keyboard is superior in control, since it works the same functionality but less delay (Moving your mouse across the screen takes more time then pushing a button and inch away). The downside is the loss of hot keys, and having to move buttons around.

Ye, force staff is so good with not only helping you stay alive, but also setting up good shackle shots.

Edit: Can't see why orchid would be bad on Clinkz, as 1.09 said, you wont get any easy kills on heroes with stuns and the skills cost a lot of mana. The early attack speed is really nice since you will not have strafe early on (atleast not a high rank), since you'll want your searing arrows maxed and a high level on windwalk to easily get around the map fast. But that's if you want to gank early on, otherwise you can go some boring early bkb build for team fights.

Learn to orbwalk and you wont be having any problems with killing heroes, yes you should get orchid if there is a lot of heroes with escapability, but its still not a "core item" you always should go for.

Medallion and Ring of Aquila shitty items?..............Do you know what they do?

WHAT AM I READING

If I need to know what's happening across the map in an instant, WASD is of no use to me (and there will be times where you need drop everything in seconds and jump across the map on the wing of a TP). If I need to quickly pan somewhere right next to me, I have middle mouse for that purpose. Even then, I don't really need it all that often. Much prefer keeping all my camera functions on the mouse, and all my skill and item functions on the keyboard (further condensed by reusing space + qwer to activate items).

I usually get Aquila and Orchid on Clinkz. He is a ganker without a single interrupt, that really hurts him in his intended role.

The new Orchid is also amazing.

Off. You only want to auto-attack when it is to lasthit an opposing creep, or to deny your own/bring it down faster.

Also I'm pretty sure Coolwhip is a massive troll at this point.

I almost exclusively use the minimap to issue move/TP commands and the viewport for anything in my immediate area.

Again, personal preferences, but I do suggest people use the minimap for issuing move/TP since it saves another step of having to pan over (or even click to snap the camera over there) before doing something.

If you leave it on, you're attracted to minions like a magnet which will prove costly when trying to escape.

Wont happen if you just move. Pulling aggro off creeps (that are hitting something) will only happen if you attack enemy heroes. If the creeps aren't attacking anything, it will work the same if you have it on or off. Having auto-attack off is good for newer players that aren't used to having it on all the time so they wont accidenlty auto attack creeps since they might stop moving once in a while. Players that are used to playing with it on are used with moving constanlty during the laning phase.

Does Vanguard stack with Kraken Shell on Tidehunter?

If it is like regular dota then the latest ability/item with damage block you get will be the one that counts first. So if you first get kraken and then vanguard, it will check for vanguard first, and if that fails, it will go with kraken instead (if vanguard succeeds, kraken is not used). If you get vanguard before leveling kraken, then kraken willl go 100% of the time.

Does anyone know how to alter dota 2's config to get lower settings? Wanna aim for a comfortable fps on my laptop, it gets 30 fps with lowest settings and triple buffering enabled.

Kraken Shell does not stack with other Damage Reduction items.

It explicitely says so on its tooltip. >_>

That's what I thought, but I was reading some stuff that said they did stack. Thanks for the answers.

If you are not in the beta yet and registered late to playdota.com they upped the join date cut off to today. So anyone who registered prior today but after the last cut off which was Dec 17th now is eligible for their bot giveaway in this thread. Today they gave away 1800 keys.

Did seem like a strong hint. Hope not next week though, maybe in 2/3 weeks. Need a few more big things like tutorials, improved matchmaking and the new replay system. So most likely a few weeks after this.

because pubs don't know how to use items, it's a bad build.

gotcha.

I bet open beta is this week. The blog heavily hinted at it.

Doubt it, there's no way in hell they'll get the number of servers they need for it by Thursday. Maybe by next week, but that's iffy even. I do remember there was that rumor of February open beta though.

I think they would need to put more of the beginner friendly features in before they release it as an open beta. A lot of the people that I know that got into the closed beta stopped playing after less than a week because they felt it was inaccessible.

There isn't much you can do in that regard right now. The options that currently are don't do too much, and others aren't implemented yet (such as "Ambient Animals", which is the little squirrels and butterflies going across the lanes).

At the very least, they need just a basic tutorial to start with just to say how the game works, what the object of the game is, how to push lanes, etc. They can go from there.

I'm curious of the percentages of people that actually played LoL and HoN's tutorial.

Thank you for the heads up :)

For all new players, this is an excellent guide for learning the Dota system.
Thanks, I'll try to read this so I'll be ready whenever I finally get into the beta.

Does anyone know if Dark Seer's Ion Shell is still double stackable? (being able to cast two on yourself for double damage)

Is that really T Swift, you made your user name IHeartTSwift
