Starhawk (Closed) Beta Testing thread of impressions and questions.

I do understand the rifle issues, but I personally do not have that many issues with it, I just tap fire and the accuracy is pretty good - if anything maybe it takes too many to kill?

Interested to see:

and EU Limited edition

No, the amount of time it takes to kill someone is fine, that shouldn't be changed. The only downside is the regenerative health which can be a pain. If you just focus on headshots whilst using the rifle they usually go down in a few seconds.

As for the EU Limited edition:

NOOOOOO, why no limited edition. darn it.

As I said, no real issue for me with rifle but just raising the question for people who do have an issue

loving the game, will pre-order as soon as I know whether we will have any kind of limited/special edition

What an absolutely miserable experience I had with this tonight. Out of 5 matches I tried to play, 3 ended with connection errors and one locked up my PS3, so I lost all my fucking XP. Normally I wouldn't care about the XP, but I was hoping to unlock some more perks. On top of that most games were plagued by excessive lag and I'm not really digging the pre-built structures at all. Fucking ridiculous.

Is there something wrong with voice chat? I've been in a few gaf games, but never heard anyone else with a mic. I can see on the player list that others have mics plugged in, but nobody responds. Is this just PSN?

had no idea the beta was up for UC3 buyers. D/L'd it last night and I'm liking it a lot more than I thought I would. My only problem is it seems very hard to get kills on foot, almost at a disadvantage that way. The build feature is great though. Love how everyone kind of works together and you can feel like you are helping your team even if you aren't running and gunning and getting a ton of kills, or even going after the flag. Cant' wait for the full release.

I downloaded the beta and tried it out some. I usually don't play these kind of games online but thought I would give it a shot. I really like the building aspect because I can do something usefull for the team even if I don't get a lot of kills. I am going to hit the game stores tuesday for TM. While I am there going to look for a headset for my PS3. Any recomondations for a reasonably priced headset? Also is there any games with NEOGAFERs I can find?

Use the shotgun

I got a few solid hours into the game this afternoon. The learning curve is large since I don't play FPS online. I am starting to figure somethings out. I need to get a lot more flight time can't get any kills in the air. I have had a few good maps where I got the flag a few times. That was nice to feel like I was making a difference. Very fun game will get more time into it this week since the wife is out of town.

I don't care at all for online gaming but for some reason Starhawk keeps getting me back in for another quick round even though you know your stats keep getting continually wiped hehe.

The Hawks aren't durable enough though. Mech mode is nearly completely pointless as you can get taken down by one guy with a couple of grenades or a launcher hiding behind a rock. The launcher takes you down in no time and freaking locks on to the hawks in half a second. I get what they are trying to do to balance it out but it doesn't seem balanced to me. They should make the hawk more deadly but cost more to spawn instead of the system right now where they are basically throwaways that everybody can hop straight onto within the first 2 seconds of every match.

I think they have got it right. Hawks are cheap so it's not a pain to try and save up for one and if you go charging into the enemies base and go mech your gonna get your ass handed.

Stay in the air and do bombing runs on the base and destroy buildings and other defenses. The hawk can handle infantry but it's not a good idea to since a competent player will destroy you.

The Hawks are plenty durable in the hands of capable players, which it sounds like you're not if you're getting punked by a lack of situational awareness.

Find a room with players that know what the hell they're doing and observe a skilled team of hawks suppressing ground troops from the air and ground. It's pretty scary.

Yeah, this game is awesome. There's quite a bit to take in when you first play, but once you're into the rhythms and flow of everything then it becomes really good. I'd love to know when exactly that 32-player Dust map is coming.

^ agreed

Been playing since closed beta, have loved the refinements and skills etc, really looking forward to new map and (hopefully) vehicles

Any good tips on hitting things on the ground with a hawk? It seems to move to fast for me to target things on the ground. One thing that gets annoying is my team mates jacking my hawk. Depending on the 32 player map that comes out in Beta I might buy the game day 1. This is most fun I have had playing a game online in a very long time. I really am loving the RTS elements. It lets even people like me who suck actually do a little to contribute and not feel like a total drag on the team.

The hawk is not meant to do well against ground troops. It's not impossible to kill them but it's so hard it's not worth it most of the time. If you really need to kill infantry on the ground go Mech mode and spam missiles and hope they don't throw grenades and rockets at you.

I'm loving this game so much. Took a while to grow on my but man this has the potential to be better than Warhawk.

Does anyone know where to get mines from? Is it a skill unlock? I had one stick to my wing on my hawk earlier.

It looks like you were locking on with your hawk in air to air combat. How do you do that? Also it is more about taking out structures on the ground is what I would like to master or atleast be able to do a little lol.

It's a light green.

It's in the center of the map on Acid Sea. It's near the center of the map closer to the Rifter base on the Space Map.

I'd really love if they could change the color of it as it doesn't stick out well as noted by your posts. :P

Yeah I had no idea I'll have to look out for them. Weapon pick ups are really tough to spot if you don't know where they are. I had no idea there was even a repair tool pick up until a few days ago.

Glad you guys like the gifs, this thread needs some more to brighten the place up :)

This is what happens to hawks trying to land in our base.

Poor guy couldn't fly away fast enough lol

Finally with the open beta i'm playing it too.

With a good number Warhawk players expressing disappointment about SH i entered the game with some doubt.
I loved WH.

But i've to say that i can see already greatness in this game.
It has the potential to deliver way more than WH, it has more mature concept, developed with great attention.
It's unique in the whole shooter genre.

I hope that the community will support it, that Sony will push it as AAA+, in the end i do not want this to be another MAG, a forgotten awesome game.

Update 1.2.10 - details here

and below:

Starhawk Public BETA Update 1.2.10
Date, Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 12:11PM

The 1.2.10 update for the Starhawk Public BETA was deployed during the server maintenance today, February 15 at 2pm Central time and included the following changes:

Significantly increased Swarm Missile damage vs. Hawks.
Reduced Shotgun max ammo capacity.
Rocket Launcher now must reload after firing 1 rocket.
Increased Hawk MG firing time before it begins to overheat.
Reduced OTS snap assist on Kinetic Rifle.
Increased minimum Rift Energy granted upon respawn to 3.

Swarm Missile Damage Increased:
This update increases the damage that Swarm Lasers deal to Hawks by more than 100%. As you can imagine this greatly increases the threat of this weapon during a dogfight and also helps to reduce the issue players were experiencing where dogfights felt too long and protracted due to the enormous number of Swarm Laser strikes being required for effective combat.

Shotgun Ammo Changes:
When used properly the Shotgun can be a formidable weapon however we were not seeing the ammo limits really coming into play at all. Players would have the shotgun and just "spam" away until they were dead. To help address this we have lowered the Shotgun max ammo capacity by almost 50% as well as reducing the number of Shotgun shells you get from an ammo box. Previously it was 15 shells and now its 4 shells.

This should help stem the brutal sustainability of the Vulture JetPack and Shotgun tactic.

Rocket Launcher Missile Capacity:
We have been tracking the game data like a ninja ever since we made the changes to the Rocket Launcher targeting in the 1.2.8 Update.

Based on the data we are seeing -- and the feedback from the community -- we feel the Rocket Launcher is currently overpowered. To help address this we are making the Rocket Launcher fire only 1 rocket before a reload is required. This helps space out the cadence of Rocket Launcher attacks which benefits troops and pilots alike.

Hawk MG Overheat:
Simply put, we needed to make the Hawk MG more effective. To this end, we have lengthened the amount of time the MG can fired in continuous full-auto before the gun overheats by almost 50%!

Furthermore, we have adjusted the MG so that it will cool-down from a full overheat nearly 33% faster than previously. However, we've added a 1 second pause after you release before the MG will begin cooling down and if you fully overheat your MG, you will have to wait 2 seconds before the cool-down process will begin.

Kinetic Rifle OTS Snap Assist:
Having observed and played count-less ground engagements, and having reviewed the gameplay analytics *AND* having read feedback from our community, we've decided to reduce the amount of snap assist on the Kinetic Rifle.

Snap assist is the targeting aid that kicks in when you press while in character mode. If your target was somewhat nearby your reticle at the time your pressed , the game would help center-up your target to aid you in combat. The 1.2.10 Update makes this a bit tighter and hopefully not as exploitable.

Now Respawn with 3 Rift Energy Minimum:
Previously in the Starhawk BETA, you would initially spawn into the game with 3 Rift Energy and every subsequent respawn would alway start you with a minimum of 1 Rift Energy. Today's 1.2.10 Update changes this so on initial spawn *AND* subsequent respawn, you will always start with a minimum of 3 Rift Energy.

I'm already sold on this game. I love the new mechanics, and the 3rd person controls are so much better than Warhawk. A cover system would be nice, but it's not necessary.

But I'm very anxious to see the other maps. Warhawk's maps were fairly uninteresting, and it looks like Starhawk is following the same model (albeit prettier).

What would put Starhawk over the top is map-specific objectives. Enemy Territory did it best, and few online games even try. But it makes the action feel more meaningful. Could be something to think about for DLC.
