Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006. It is now 2012. These are facts.

I wonder which will be released first, Final Fantasy Versus, The Last Guardian or Episode 3.

Fucking Duke Nukem Forever was released and these titles didn't!

They should rename the game to Final Fantasy Forever; F3.

please dont ban me. It seem to slowly become next Duke Nukem Forever

It gets harder & harder each year to know that they are still making game given the lack of information they give their fans.

Why is it SO hard to provide a release date or even more information? What have you got to lose at this point?

Honor, of course. I'm an expert. They should commit senpuukyaku at this rate.

Definitely not Episode Three
(because it's now Half-Life 3).

Because the development is still in a state where they can't make such guesses.

And yes, a dev cycle this long is a clusterfuck no matter what they are doing right now.

That's fucking cold man.

To be honest at this stage I'd rather them take another 6 years and actually make a good game than churn out another game as bad as they have been

I can live with the development time but as I mentioned in my previous post. It's the development time vs the amount of actual game information they've shared with the community.

Look at Guild Wars 2, they've taken probably just as long to come out with the game but they've let their fan base play it at events & have a heck of a lot more information than anything we know about Versus XIII. It really doesn't make much sense...

Except going on 6 is no matter how you look at it.
Facts need to be taken into account. KH Team helping in XIII's development alone took one year out of that, no progress was being made during that time. Then there's the simple fact that Nomura & KH Team were too busy to even start working on the game for almost a year after the game's announcement. So... yeah, closer to 4 is the truth.

Even if it would only be 3,5 years of full time development, it'd still be ridiculous considering how little anyone has seen of the game.
It's not really that weird. Rockstar didn't show LA Noire or Red Dead Redemption at all until, like, 6 months before release. That's just the way these companies run their hype machines. The next in line releases get the attention.

Quick screen-cap:

Versus was announced like a month or two after XII was out in Japan.

We've also gotten two 2D-Marios and three 3D-Marios since Versus was announced. We used to have those once per generation.

In my eyes still one of the day 1 games for me. Just love everything about it - the fantastic music, the setting, characters. This is worthy of being named FFXV.

I'm begining to think that those 3 titles are one and the same,, an RPG about a Cat-like being made by Valve :)

Maybe those titles had 10 years development life cycles ? 10 year life cycle is all the rage these days , ask Sony

Birth by Sleep was your KHIII.
BBS is more like Kingdom Hearts 0.

Yeah, and Square Enix released XIII, XIII-2, Type-0, Crisis Core and Tactics A2 in about the same time it took between Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Your point?

I seriously don't understand this whining about Versus' development time. Yeah, they announced it too soon (but if they had waited for, like, last year, people would've been whining about them not announcing Kingdom Hearts III or why Nomura was wasting his time on portable games, or how they just tease about Nomura's next project without showing anything concrete). Still, Versus seems one of the most ambitious projects Square Enix has ever done, so I'd rather they take their time with it than do another XIII (rushed to the point of being stripped from even some basic features). Let them take their time instead of taking it as a personal insult that it's taken this long.

Last I heard, Nomura was finalizing the story concept and setting. They are currently running tests on their engine to create "hd worlds." Airships and chocobos are being implemented, but it is taking longer than expected. They are also introducing new lighting elements. Final character costumes are soon to be finalized, and cutscenes are being redone. The game is about to enter the second phase of "full production." where artists can finally see the game in some kind of state and elaborate, discuss and reiterate. The team is hard at work, sleeping under their desks every night, and they hope to be able to show something within the next year.

I think the whining has to do with the complete and utter lack of information or interaction with fans or anything. Barely any interviews, nothing is said about development. It's always "they hope to show something soon." Are you fucking kidding? You can't even give us a couple new screenshots or something? Throw us a fucking bone.

With that said, I think this might be the game I've waited an entire generation for...literally.

As I said... I've got no problems with that. I would like to know more about it & see it more in action though. They can take as long as they want as long as they would give us some information or media. I'd be happy with that...

Well thanks for the update. I had no idea about there being airships or chocobos in this game. :)

Airships & chocobos info is from, like, 2008. Most of that is old news, just put in sarcastic form. :P The most notable somewhat recent news (from, like, October last year) is that the game's world seems to be complete, based on a comment Nomura made (he had just completed a runthrough through it).

this game will be awful thanks to the hype and rapidly aging tech... think duke nukem forever
Duke Nukem Forever was awful because it's an awful game, it has nothing to do with hype or tech. I'm thinking the flying platform-thingie scene proves well enough that technology won't be a problem for this team, at least as far as providing incredible setpieces goes. Hype has nothing to do with the quality of a game either. If someone overhypes themselves, that's their problem.

I'm not even excited for this game anymore. I'm sure I'll get it if it ever comes out, but I just can't keep my hype up for a game that was announced so long ago and is clearly stuck in development hell.

Versus is like a Duke Nukem Forever that matters. It's less the butt of a joke, and more of a great sadness...

It better be fucking good... or the Square Enix derision train will never end.

Final Fantasy 13 destroyed all my interest in Final Fantasy games.

What is up with Japanese developers and their approach to game budgeting! 6 years is a long time to make a game. This and the Last Guardian are disappointing topics for me to discuss. I get that "greatness" takes time but this is a bit ridiculous. You should never get a "do what you wish" top down instruction as a major game company. If this game was going to take this long, don't announce it early. No teasers. No screenshots. Don't get our hopes up!

Why would dated tech make it an "awful" game? DNF's tech was the least of its problems. It would be every bit as bad if it were running on Cryengine 3 or Frostbite 2.0. And the hype for that game had died down completely outside of the really hardcore fans of the series. It seemed like most gamers were expecting it to be a bad game.

If Versus is a good game then no one is really going to care if the tech is dated. You can look at God of War 2 if you want proof of that. That game was released in 07, which was after all three current gen systems, and it still received tons of praise and sold very well.

Still my most anticipated game but the wait is aggravating.. to be honest, I wouldnt mind if they moved it to PS4...I am sure it will be a stunner if it is released though

FFXII was released at a similar time to Oblivion and it impressed me far more than the latter, despite being based off older tech

This game doesn't exist.

I think we'll get a FFXV trailer at E3, FFXIV remake releases this year and then XV will release next year.

Why should anyone care about games from this company anymore?

Their games don't belong in this generation and their projects, from the outside, look to be completely mismanaged.

FFXIII and XIII-2 are both extremely high budget games which have succeeded on name alone, despite S-E overlooking a lot of the old elements which made FF games so iconic, and so enjoyable.

Versus XIII looked to incorporate some of the classic FF elements which a few years ago may have been exciting, but given their current track record there doesn't seem to be much point in hoping whatever they put out next will be anything special.

It's lucky that Japan have a few excellent studios, Platinum for example, breaking out of the shadow of the old guard, S-E and Konami, who have been stagnating under the weight of their once great cash cow franchises for years now.

Someone else needs to properly take up the epic JRPG mantle. The genre is there for the taking.

Why should anyone care about games from this company anymore?

Because titles like The World Ends With You, Dissidia, Deus Ex, NiER, XIII, XIII-2, Dragon Quest IX, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Final Fantasy Type-0, Chaos Rings and more are indeed great games. And, they're part of the few japanese developers out there that still supports HD consoles and west gaming market.

Why should anyone care about games from this company anymore?
The World Ends With You, Dissidia, KH: Birth By Sleep and soon 3D, Dragon Quest, Type-0. All more or less great games.

Plus they've really turned Eidos around. They were descending into shittiness before Square Enix bought them.

I d love this scenario. Unfortunately versus is the greatest problem for ffxv: all hype and resources are shrunk on it. After versus and ffxiv console probably we will see a not team 1 ff (hoping its not for ps4.....).
As last generation it will take too long to see the light of a itou ff.
Se needs a major overhaul Imho

Versus sounds like S-E's most ambitious title to date. I think this E3 it will come to the surface again.

I also hope they rename it to FFXV.

The last thing I remember Nomura announcing was that all the costume designs for the main cast were finalized. This was around 6 months ago....

Few years ago they didn't spend time to silly things like costumes and after seeing the pretty boys backstreets boys trend in versus design I really really wonder if nomura is serious when he says these things.
Passing from Matsuno to toryiama first and nomura is really too much.
Go to bankrupt se please

Stop being such a drama queen. They aren't focusing all of their attention on these things. And other games go through numerous iterations of their main characters' designs as well (whether that's just them adding more detail, or making bigger changes, depends on the game).

And fuck you, Square Enix still makes awesome games. They don't need to go anywhere, especially since they've acknowledged their problems and have started fixing them (that just doesn't happen in a day with a company the size of Square Enix). Still, their localization & development times have improved significantly in the last few years, they take fan feedback into consideration (as proved by XIII-2 and XIV's revamp, as well as giving harder difficulty levels in Kingdom Hearts games after II was criticized for being too easy). They are on the right tracks, really, no one can deny that. The only thing they need to do now is kick Toriyama out of writing duties.

Well Versus is 'next' according to Nomura, meaning all the hype that SE was giving for Type-0 and FF XIII-2 will be transferred over to Versus. The game's in full production, finally, the voice actors have been hired and are currently doing the dubbing. So it really looks like we're 1 or 1 and half years away from Versus, it may even come in sooner. Remember how fast Type-0 was finished after it went into full production after T3B was released? It's similar situation with Versus, since they pretty much have all the concepts and story done.

I really don't think so.

Something like say FFVI or FFVII was way more ambitious for its time compared to what Versus XIII is for this generation if we compare across the whole RPG genre. Of course that's just me speculating based on what we know...the game itself will probably show much more but from what we know so far I think people really overhype Versus XIII sometimes.

I hope its renamed too!

Maybe VII is more ambitious but FVI was definately not (though the game was freaking awesome). Versus is really trying to do something completely different for the franchise, it will be ther first time since PSOne era we'll see a world map on a home console in an FF game and this time with destructible environments. Further, you can pretty much access anything you see. Graphically, it's a powerhouse now even before we've seen the graphical boost that it got. Also the setting appeals to many people exactly because it is the closest we've come to an FF VII setting ever.

Does anyone think this'll become multiplat? I mean SE has poured so much resources into this and a PS3 only release might not allow SE to recoup their money back.

Se doesn't make awesome games anymore: ff13 is steps behind ff before it, dqix is steps behind dqvii and dq8 was weaker than previous dq.

Also nomura writing and directing skills aren't that better than watanabe or toryiama.

Probably their production and developing systems are improving but the men with the reins aren't really talented like before.
Yet if ff13 and kh are good for lots of people it's all a different matter with versus which will be a powerhouse. But if some finds kh and ff13 really bad versus cannot become a light of hope Imho. I am part of the second category
