Space Pirates 7

Did anyone else think this had a lot of sexual undertones? This felt... weird. Also there was Chiaki Omigawa.

The closest thing to that was when she was dolled up during the raid, other than that it's safe.

Only saving grace of the Omigawa part was that I had Hnngazawa as an antidote for every line she said.

Bodacious Space Pirates 7

Not quite as good as last week's episode, but still several steps above a certain other show I could mention. There seemed to be a bit of a hit to the budget as well, with reused footage and a fair amount of distant shots.

So much delicious Omigawa and Hanawaza in the first half of the episode,
dolled up Marika was pretty funny
, and things might possibly get a little more serious next episode.
I doubt it though, looks like the stowaway will just transfer into the school. anime. I'm wondering if there's something more going on that we know, however, considering the odd behavior of the escort ships during the attack. It might be just a mistake, as the crew said, but I'm not writing out the possibility something more sinister is afoot.

Lagrange 07:
It was glorious.

The fanservicey bits were a bit too distracting considering how well this episode handled the emotional bits though. And one thing did bother me:
every time they animate tears like marbles I can't help but laugh. That's not how tears work, dammit.

Anime represents a prefect world man, that's how they'd work in such a wondrous land.

Oh man, they're laying it on thick today. Trying really hard to make me give a dang about Muginami. At least they brought back the WIDESCREEN!
Oh, look, they're paralleling the same "dream->wakeup" structure and shots as they used for Lan.
I rather enjoyed the flashback stuff for Muginami, since it didn't last forever, but it still didn't make me like her anymore. The flashbacks at least had a good mood to them, well, until they started dressing stupidly. Ugh. The present-day Muginami personality just irritates me too much.

Organball sounds fun! Where do I sign up?
Whoops, Butler got called out. Sort of. Nice recovery, butler. I wonder what else he's keeping them in the dark about?

So, what is this? Eels? Why?
Oh, that's why. Okay, I approve of this. ...What?
(nah, it's actually pretty dumb. This whole episode made me cringe at how hard they were forcing the fanservicey stuff.)
Lan getting on to Madoka for running and the ensuing moment made the entire setpiece worth it, though. hahaha

So, Madoka's teacher is somehow omniscient, and she gets Madoka to realize... something. I'm still not sure. Madoka was totally still in the right, I don't care what the show says. Regardless of the "get revenge" thing, they had to stop them from coming to destroy the Voxs, so yeah. Also, DUN DUN DUN! Why do I suspect this will pretty much not ever be discussed in-depth until much later in the show?
What's the best way to make up? Naked bath hugs, of course! Poor, Lan. : (

Wait, Muginami is going to leave anyways? FANTASTIC! What? Lan?! What are you doing?! NOOOOOO!
And then the strangest part of the whole episode: What the heck am I watching?!

CHAIRS

...What am I watching? Oh well, hopefully that will be the most of this they try to force for a while. I don't mind it if they let it happen more naturally, but all the fanservice in this episode pretty much undermined any of the sympathy they were trying to generate for Muginami. It was awkward and didn't work more often than it did.

Wan~

I love the way urls can be seen through spoiler tags.
Those blue links are rather titillating through all the spoiler tags.
Strategic placement! I made sure not to do anything truly spoilery in the urls. : )
Well, except maybe organball. But I don't think anyone will ever know what that is.

Shaft's been outdone, forget snakes, there are eels!
"She's one bad mother-"
"SHUT YO MOUTH!"
"I'm only talkin' bout Lan."
"We can dig it."

Hmm, I wonder if Lagrange will every be able (or chose to) shed it's creepy, pandering to otaku approach to it's female characters.

SERVICE

SERVICE
Well, I guess not. Good job guys, you're really trying to make it as awkward as possible.

An anime? If so, source? You sure you don't mean the standard Love Live music videos?
No, it's really a full series for 2013.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...school-idol-project-gets-anime-series-in-2013

They apparently also recently started a manga, whose plot goes thusly:
The premise is that an old/traditional high school, Otonokizaka Academy, is in danger of being changed scrapped (and presumably modernized, reorganized), but to avoid this fate, nine girls band together to spread the school's good name and attract new students by performing as idols.

That's true,
the fanservice was unecessary as well in the bathroom. However, in the bath room scene, we did have the conversation between ararararagi and Shinobu, so the scene wasn't only fanservice. with the yuri sisters, it was pure fanservice. that's all I'm saying!
Shaft fans trying to justify shameless fan-service (lol).
It looks like our hapless hero is going to be in trouble with genki girl and tsundere girl going head to head for his affection.
It's cool because in the other show the protagonist had a hoodie and there was a girl with a big pet, it's like a reference or something.
Every day the dream I had where E7 AO ended up being terrible, ends up being closer and closer to reality.

What a tease

...maybe.

Revolutionary Girl Utena 01

I bought all the new boxsets a while ago, haven't gotten around to watching anything until now.

That's the most yuri-tastic OP I've seen since the last time I watched Kannazuki no Miko.

Ah, so that's how "Utena" is pronounced!

For all that she's an archetypical tomboy, Utena's voice is surprisingly high.

Not eight minutes in we get the first slap of the series. Apparently this is a thing with this show?

The student council members seem a bit dramatic, even for anime.

Jerk move, Saionji. The first boss always has an inflated opinion of himself, I suppose.

Those Greek chorus shadows remind me of the dark bunnies from Penguindrum. And this whole secret chamber in the forest outside the school business reminds me of Star Driver.

Wait...is this the stair-climbing sequence that gets turned into stock footage for the rest of the series? It's pretty neat, I guess I wouldn't mind watching it again.

The end of that duel doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

"Absolute destiny apocalypse" is one of those phrases that can only be said with a straight face in Japanese.

So, I guess this is the bad end of the harem route.
Fun episode, with traumatizing the resident shota, adding to your harem to make it less deadly with bad results and a re run from last week.
That was some voodoo magic Chiri did at the end of Let's Draw Zetsubou Sensei though.

It did, but then it got worse. I understand that they're trying to sell BD's and such, but if none of that content was present the show would be a lot more palatable.

The same could be said for most recent anime that pander to the otaku.

Mind you, I was of the opinion BD sales were pretty bad regardless and most anime exist to push sales of manga and light novels.

deal with it...

and call me a pervert otaku because I enjoy the show is the first step to be the first one on my ignore list.

If you take out the fanservice and hnng, I'm not sure what would be left. Melodrama and some vaguely described war with aliens?

Do people seriously watch anime for these things? :\

Anyway, it'd still have the mecha. Plus remove the fanservice and you could have more room to add plot and character development.

[Glass Fleet 1 -5]

This show is legitimately amazing. I kept thinking that it would be impossible for Cleo and Vetti to one-up the homoerotic undertones that are present when your spaceship is a giant phallus but I was so very wrong.

I'm pretty sure the dub script writers and actors are playing it up as well, which makes it even better.

It only gets weirder as the series goes on.

If you like perverted things, dunno why you'd give a fuck about what people say.

And I'm glad that Lagrange is presenting an environmentally conscious alternative to wearing swimming suits. A wayward bikini top could choke a fish to death.

The same can't be said. Not in the same sense you're implying.

That's not how math works.

Whoa, what got you so mad?

Wait...is this the stair-climbing sequence that gets turned into stock footage for the rest of the series? It's pretty neat, I guess I wouldn't mind watching it again.

I liked all of the repeated stock footage scenes in Utena
and apparently ranked them

Black Rose Elevator>Stair Elevator>Stairs=Student Council Elevator>that one building shot>that other shot

I am pretty apt at ranking things. So this should be absolute.

The same can't be said. Not in the same sense you're implying.

How so? I'm not saying that by taking the excessive fanservice out of all otaku series that it would make them better. Only most. Or maybe even only some. I don't watch that many series with fanservice (read: ecchi) as it's one of my least favorite aspects of anime. I do like Rinne though.

Haha, I get it. Emperor penguin.
So we get scammed by loss leaders, make some jokes about generals, and talk about how surprises aren't surprising anymore. I got nothing else to really say.

Welcome to modern anime!

Anyway, it'd still have the mecha. Plus remove the fanservice and you could have more room to add plot and character development.

You'd probably end up with something like Fafner, though, which isn't necessarily a good thing (and I liked Fafner!).

If you could have a show with an atmosphere like Lagrange's and the same attention to artistic detail, except with central characters that don't do things just for the sake of being moe, I think that would probably entertain me more.

Perhaps it's churlish of me to want Lagrange to be something other than what it is, especially when has decent production values (which is more than so many shows nowadays). But it's a show where the fanservice is almost superfluous, rather than the whole point of the show's existence, and I can't help wishing it wasn't necessary because it's not why I would want to watch the show.

ef – a tale of memories Episodes 5 – 8

Although I like Miyako was kind of hoping the show would be ballsy enough to pull a bad ending with her. I really hope that bitch Kei gets what’s coming to her but that’s not going to happen, probably. And finally poor Chihiro and Renji (
still not sure why he freaked the fuck out when she asked to kiss him
).

Even in the last year, most includes animes which explicitly pander. They're not better without it. And we're not limited to what you aren't including in the sample size. My point is most wouldn't improve since removing that ignores the intent of shows.

You'd probably end up with something like Fafner, though, which isn't necessarily a good thing (and I liked Fafner!).

The ultimate argument for fanservice in Lagrange.

(I know you like Fafner, but.....I'll link to my episode-by episode meltdowns from when I marathoned the show in the previous thread if anyone wants to know my take on it)

If you're watching Rinne for the robot fighting, you're doing it wrong.

Then again, robot porn and moe porn are two sides of the same coin anyway...

LTTResponse.

No, I really dislike the look of the characters. Sometimes they look like CG models with a cheap hair layer dropped on top - this isn't a constant thing, but it annoys me when it pops out at me. Another, although much more minor thing, is the CG doors. Does Production IG not have the manpower to animate wooden doors opening and closing? I've seen them do this in other shows as well and it does not look good, especially when all the rest of the backgrounds are traditional and look great.
I agree, I found the designs to be a major turnoff. I almost didn't watch it because I thought it was in poor taste to give the protagonist that kind of haircut in the setting they appeared to be going for.

I'm starting to get more and more frustrated with IG's use of cgi. When they make it work, they do it better than most anyone else. However, there are so many times when their choices in implementation feel more like an excuse to lazily cut corners that didn't need cutting. I don't know if it's more a matter of efficiency or production cost savings that leads them to do this, but it bugs the heck out of me.

Oh, and if you're going to watch this film don't stop watching until AFTER the credits. There's another scene there.
Dang it, I'm going to have to watch this again soonish, then.
I originally watched this a few months ago when youtube had like a free week for watching some of the movie they typically charged for (watched Tekkon Kinkreet and Tokyo Godfathers too. It was a good week).

Oh my god spoilers

I'm not sure how other people felt about the 'twist' in the films story. I figured it out near the beginning of the movie, when Kannami talked stated that 'this feels familiar' a few times and Kusanagai examined his bent matchstick far too closely. I was already vaguely aware that the story was about genetically engineered child soldiers, so clones with implanted memories seemed like a logical next step, especially when Kannami discovers that no-one will talk about the fate of the last-pilot to fly his plane.

In fact, it seemed so obvious that for a moment there the movie wasn't going to head in that direction. However, it did, with the very deliberate and noticeable newspaper-folding scene. I felt that this scene was enough to let all the audience know what was going on. I mean, there had been lots and lots of hints before, but that kind of sealed the deal. Which is why I was very disappointed when Midori did a massive exposition dump about how it 'feels' to be a Kildren and her own personal fears about her own identity.

This was really unnecessary because literally the WHOLE movie had been doing nothing else but making us feel like a Kildren. Oshii does a number of things to make the characters and the world feel dislocated and out of time.
I thought they were broadcasting it too strongly, as well.
I remember, when I was watching it, thinking "surely that's not what this is. It can't be so obvious?" I would like to give the movie credit and say it's supposed to be how the protagonist is likely feeling in regards to "is this what's going on?" but it felt too obtuse, in the end, for me.

I guess we're approaching the films message, or messages. There's a few to discuss, I suppose. The nature of man and war, the role of corporations in such an exercise and the fate of the people who live in such a system. Still, we never really get a good feel for the corporations or their motivations for engaging in this war. As Kannami points out, they're not a very profitable business and it doesn't seem like their battles would really have much impact on the many and varied reasons 'real wars' break out. Neither do I really the argument that people need to 'see war' on TV a very convincing one.
I don't remember all of that terribly clearly, but I recall being glad they didn't delve into it further in retrospect.
I can see it potentially being a jumping-off point where they might have spent too much time over-explaining things to make the premise make more sense, or just taken the plot in another direction with it. I'm kind of glad we are left in the dark as much as we were, but I probably need to see it again before I can say anything beyond that.

Sorry, I don't really have anything more to add, but I'm glad the number of people that enjoyed the film is continuing to grow beyond the handful of us now.

Even in the last year, most includes animes which explicitly pander. They're not better without it. And we're not limited to what you aren't including in the sample size.

I'll take your word for it, though in the end it's only really speculation. If Rinne or any other otaku-oriented anime removed it's pandering, it would only really doing so for the better if it filled the void with something more substantial. While you could say that much is subjective, I'd wager most of us weren't drawn to Japanese animation for ecchi.

If you're watching Rinne for the robot fighting, you're doing it wrong.

Then again, robot porn and moe porn are two sides of the same coin anyway...

It's hard to describe Rinne really, it just gives Nadesico vibes with how fun it is. I like the mecha too of course and there's not really much to choose from this season. Only other thing I'm watching is ZnTF :\ (for the SxL romance, ironically. Maybe I'm just doing it all wrong.)

I'd go into how "it's a shame" etc, but no doubt it was covered ad nauseum around here once everyone realized Chihayafuru was heading for a BOMBA.

If only Chihayafuru had some more T&A it would be on the road to success.

(I know you like Fafner, but.....I'll link to my episode-by episode meltdowns from when I marathoned the show in the previous thread if anyone wants to know my take on it)

I have an Arjuna avatar unironically, my taste is not necessarily a benchmark for anyone to follow...

It's been a long time since I watched it but Fafner has difficulty in grounding its melodrama in sympathetic characters; there are too many, they don't get enough screen time, and the "dramatic" conceit of the Fafners (that whoever rides in them has their personality amplified to become some kind of exaggeration) only really serves to caricature the supporting characters while emphasising the "awesomeness" of the central trio of Kazuki, Soushi and Maya.

Lagrange, from what I've watched of it, has potentially interesting characters, but they're let down by the show refusing to let them just be and giving them moe tics etc.

Oh, man. Ringo.

Still enjoying this. Not all of the jokes work, but the ones that do keep me going. The simple art is competent and consistent. A part of me wishes that this had started out with a focus on the girls from the start. The original trio--barring the Sugita-voiced Hidenori--are kinda dull in comparison to all the other groups in the show.
