Hmmm..so this sounds pretty bad imho. I mean, you cant play Wipeout with other players at the same time? Cant play a FIFA match against someone? You cant play tennis against another person? Cant race against others in Ridge Racer? If this is accurate isnt that kind of backwards?

All of those games have online play. Ridge Racer not sure of.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger on Amazon's 3G/WiFi + 8GB card + Screen Protector deal. Also took advantage of the B2G1 deal and nabbed Hot Shots Golf, Lumines, and Uncharted.

After playing Uncharted 3, I'm rather indifferent toward the Uncharted franchise. May end up selling it and putting the money towards Escape Plan.

Alright folks I just backed out. Was gonna sell my 3ds and decided not to, was gonna use amazon credit I have sitting there that would put my cost at a whopping 9.98 but then I found this

If Sony were selling at a loss I would feel safeguarded against price drops but they have $100 wiggle room on the 3g model no less. Screw that. Not getting 3ds'd again. I'll wait and see what goes down in the next few months. Enjoy gentlemen.

lol.

You have no idea what it actually costs them.

You can do all of that just not on 3G. 3G was never intended for online play.

Oh boy, this again.....

That is strictly one site's opinion on the cost of the parts. Cost could be higher, namely the screen being only $50 sounds hard to believe. Also it doesn't take into effect cost to R&D, Manufacture, Ship, Market, etc. Some of those budgets can be higher than the parts themselves.

lol.

If you factor in shipping costs, RND, software development and wholesale value then I would wager that they make $50 at the very highest.

This actually reassures me to be honest. I am going to buy one before a price drop, as I did with 3DS, so I prefer that they make money on them. It gives them more incentive to support the system.

Like other people have said, you can do all that over wifi. Not sure what is confusing you here. 3G is just for basic web surfing and small application downloads. Wireless gaming sucks even over 4G, not really a possibility.

QFT, my exact thought.

so its not a good estimate? Again after being burned with the 3ds where we also knew nintendo was gouging on hardware I'm not doing it again. With regular consoles, with the exception of nintendo, manufacturers would take a decent hit. Why should this be any different?

Just a question; There was some debate earlier that PS Vita only did 1 PSN account per console. Is this still a fact? Debating on whether I should keep using my EU PSN with saved trophies or US PSN for better store.

I guess I could follow up with another question. Can you buy a PSP game from say, JPN PSN using PS3 and transfer it to a Vita using cable? Do both consoles HAVE to be logged in on the same PSN account for that to work?

I went from wait and see to: wifi vita, 4gb mc, uncharted, hot shots golf, and FIFA(first sports game I bought since the first madden for ps2.) Amazon pulling through and making it easy.

Guys it's a fucking PS3 in your pocket with a beautiful screen, touch controls, and arguably the best launch lineup of any console ever. If you have the means, claim to be a gamer, and still sit this out, well, I feel sorry for you.

Sony aren't used to making a profit at launch. They aimed to sell the WiFi for $250 when they were first at the drawing board. For all we know that could simply have meant they aim to break even at launch NOT make a profit.

There are plenty of factors that go behind the final pricing of a product, including R&D expenses. Bill of Materials should never be taken as an accurate indicator of how much it takes the manufacturer to create a product.

Both consoles had to be logged into the same account to do that on PSP.

The Vita does only allow one account at a time. You can switch accounts but it requires a factory reset. It basically means most of us will only use one account ever because of the hassle.

It is only an estimate (keyword) of the cost of parts only.

Having said that every console will have a price drop (Duh I know), and for what it's worth handhelds are more likely to drop price faster than home consoles.

Really it is up to you. If it is a system you want then go for it! I don't expect Sony to be so aggressive with price cuts. At best would be this holiday season the Vita may drop to $200 for the WiFi unit. I would gladly pay the $50 premium now to get a hold of this hardware for the next 8-9 months.

The fact is, you can't compare the retail cost to the cost of materials. The materials are just one piece of it. There are many other factors contributing to the fact that they aren't making near 100 dollars on each unit.

Well at least you got your info from experts.

they're already adding price incentives in japan. The games I want aren't out yet. I was gonna jump in simply to have it but just fits me best to wait. I'll join you guys in a month or so :-)

Like a boss. I think gamers will pick this up in time. Some are understandably hesitant after the quick 3DS price drop last year. I couldn't bring myself to wait. It's such a fantastic piece of hardware with a great line up of games out of the gate.

Oh wow that kinda sucks since I got money on my EU PSN account... Guess I won't be using US PSN afterall.

Regardless of the bill of materials, is the experience Sony has created through the OS and all the social aspects worth it to you for $250? That is the question you should answer with your wallet.

You also need to take a good hard look at the consumer electronics market. Yes, Sony usually takes a loss on their game consoles. How's that been working out for them?

Then there's Apple, who makes a gigantic profit on every single thing they sell. They're currently the most valuable company in the world. And let's not forget Nintendo, who can have some crappy quarters and still sleep on billions in the bank.

Who's business model is better? 2+2=4 etc. Just because taking a loss has been the standard in the past doesn't mean it's the correct way going forward. I personally appreciate that Sony is making a profit on the Vita. It's an indication that they may have finally pulled their heads out of their asses.

Downloading a new firmware update. Does it add anything else except maps and a few more things?

1.61

[Maps] has been added to the home screen
[Photos] can now record video

Doesn't seem like a reason to update the system, hope it fixes the power-up issue some people have been having.

I took a video of one of the Gravity Daze race challenges. I'm a little hesitant to post it because the audio and video quality are pretty bad, and it's the first time I tried recording footage using a webcam. Anyways, here it is in all its 360p glory.

No real spoilers but it's an example of one of the challenges you can complete for a leaderboard ranking and gems. So far challenges seem to be divided into combat challenges (get as many points as possible by killing enemies in the time allotted) and checkpoint races.

People sadly can't ever see past the BOM as a cost for manufacturing a product.

Please consider:

Retail markup
Cost of manufacturing which includes:
-Cost of factory worker labour
-Logistics (shipping things around)
Cost of Research and Development (OH WAIT, ENGINEERS NEED TO EAT?)
Cost of advertising and marketing

Oh, definitely, if they're making a profit, then by all means, more power to them. It's about time they do. It's definitely not 100 dollars though.

I was originally going to shun the Vita, but so many people have been saying such great things about it - that I sort of did a 360 degree turn and now have a Preorder on Amazon for a Wi-fi Vita, 8GB card and Lumines!

I liked the PSP but it seemed to be limited or very poorly treated by Sony. At least the PS3 integration cross-platform shenanigans don't seem to be for all the vita titles.I recall one of the PSP's major failings, is everyone would port any original title worth buying to the PS2 in it's early days.

Looking forward to some Wipeout and Super Stardust Delta as well, I do have to credit sony, the western launch line up is rather nice

So can anyone confirm how on-line gameplay works with this unit? Someone a few pages back said that it is only turn based, like the golf game and there is no true "head-to-head" online gameplay...is that accurate?

Just got a match in with FIFA online via wifi, worked great. Lost 1-4 :(

The price may go down, but a breakdown of hardware cost isn't exactly accurate. There's labour costs, shipping costs, package materials etc.
