Within the latest episode, the following line is said:

Now compare this line to the original Japanese, translated directly into English:

To be clear, the line was thought up by FUNimation writer Tyson Rinehart, who sarcastically remarked on the negative reaction the line was getting on social media:

"If you think rape threats against women in gaming are acceptable, I'm glad my script pissed you off. #PrisonSchool #itwasjustonelineyounerds"

So what is the reasoning behind this line being randomly shoehorned into Prison School? Rinehart said the following when responding to an inquiring fan:

"I threw it in because I thought it was appropriate to the scene and fit the flaps. I even found it funny, but not my best."

Most of these particular localization changes are bad, including removing or changing the original references for no good reason, but a couple are more defensible in context. Not necessarily wrong as such, simply cringe.

Still, apparently the developers have already acknowledged the issue and the more egregious ones are being fixed. That's nice.

Generally speaking...I do think folks who hate any kind of adaptation or literary flourish, period, are often too damn sensitive. Literal translations are not always better.

One more thing, apparently if you switch to the Japanese version of the Dragonbaby site, and translate that text, they've removed a lot of the weird stuff in the English version. So part of the problem is their customers aren't seeing the same side of them that we are.

WHAT. This fucker is the one who ruined Eiyuden Chronicles? I backed this fuckin' game day one because I love Suikoden and I was SO stoked. I was devastated by the awful translation and genuinely have not been able to play the game past the first maybe 20 minutes because it's so unbearably bad. Man.. Fuck this guy.

Tokoyo mirage session had a ton of cutscenes massively changed an entire chapter changed and DLC cut in the west.

The switch remaster used the western version as a base which resulted in Nintendo Japan publicly apologising to the consumers that they where using it.

There is no way they "dont know" what localisation teams are doing, and the sad thing is its often exactly what their looking for.

Hence why these guys still have an industry.

But mostly there's a reoccurring joke where whenever the characters need to go into one of the seedy areas of the city one of the characters repeatedly runs into these 2 gays guys that keep hitting on him and it makes him uncomfortable, as you can imagine it was removed for portraying gay people in a bad light because the people who would whine about that on twitter were already part of Altus USA at that point, mind you they had no problem leaving in content where a straight male teacher was being inappropriate with female high school students, but god forbid you even make a negative joke about the gay community.

There are agencies using woke localizers as entry to the Japanese dev sphere. It starts with bad localizations and follows with "cultural changes" that lead to having Westerners moving over to Japan to censor creators from inception. It's an evil scheme that needs to stop at once.

Unlike legacy japanese brands, the koreans and chinese didn't buy into this bullshit and thats why they are constantly asking players for feedback on localization and firing translators when something like this happens. I just bought Persona 5R. What did they do to the translation?

I remember looking into this before I bought it and iirc for that one it was nothing too major (Catherine Full Body definitely has major changes, though).

There was a scene where two gay men hit on Ryuji in Shinjuku that's apparently been altered. That's the main thing. I saw something about Atlus changing it again in response to backlash, though? I'm not sure what it looks like now. Also a bunch of little things were changed because they were thought to remind people of Empire of Japan symbolism, including a Raidou costume. Apparently they also changed some Valentine's Day dialogue.

That's all I was able to find, anyway.

I'm not saying I approve of this shit btw, I wish they wouldn't censor games at all, but in this case it wasn't enough to stop me buying it because I really wanted to play it again on PC
