I still love her vocals on her new stuff (still got it), but aside from what Leona mentioned and maybe a couple others (I'd have to look), I don't like many of the songs themselves.

And yeah, I think her de-evolution in style was partly a stylistic choice and partly just that her voice was damaged from nodules since childhood, probably a naturally more fragile voice, smoking in high school, the drinking, and the fact that she wasn't exactly Celine-esque when it came to protecting her voice in general. The major shift in her voice came in 1997, and even then you could see the beginnings of the whispery style in a song like My All. Except in My All, the whispery notes sounded a lot better supported and weren't as annoying as they were in Charmbracelet, where people really took notice.

For whatever reason, she actually was sounding better live during the Charmbracelet period live, though.
She had been using that whispery tone for a while, even if more sparingly back then. I just wish she balanced it with her belting better nowadays - a song like Never Forget You (1993) is a perfect example of how she used breathy vocals to great effect long before her voice had shown even subtle signs of damage. Can't Let Go (1991) is another good one, plus my second-favorite MC song Underneath the Stars (1995) features it heavily.

Damn, that Daydream Tour voice.

Mariah Carey is a member on NeoGAF, we need her majesty's input :-p

I was referring to her fashion. Great post, though. :)

And yeah, Charmbracelet was where I first started to get annoyed with her whispery tone
Although I LOVED "Boy (I Need You)" at the time
.

Speaking of Leona and uptempos, what was she thinking when she passed on this as a single?

Or sold this gem to some random no-name J-pop artist? Had the makings of a hit to me :-(

Oh, and Mariah's fashion quickly started to accentuate two particular objects, huh?

lol

Whenever someone refers to her devolution in style, I just think of vocals. :P

The only part of that song I like is 0:23 - 0:37. I love her delivery when the boots are being laced up.

And yeah, there were other songs. Charmbracelet just didn't have any oomph behind the whispered notes compared to, say, Can't Let Go here. And they just went on *forever*. It'd be 1.5 - 3 minutes of whispering, followed by 1 - 2 minutes of belting. And she had some amazing belts, but it got really formulaic.

Edit: Speaking of that, what's going on in this video? As a very perceptive commenter put it, "she has normal boobs here o.O"

The only way to save this show would be to deflate all the self-important grandeur out of it and inject some fun, like Idol. They won't though. I predict mediocre ratings for S2.

Looks like it's really happening:

Britney Spears is nearing a deal to serve as judge on next season's The X Factor, a well-placed source tells The Hollywood Reporter. Spears' fiance, agent Jason Trawick, is negotiating the contract, which could be signed as soon as next week.

Reports surfaced recently that the pop superstar was interested in joining the panel, but according to an insider, show creator Simon Cowell made the initial approach. Spears is signed to Sony Music's RCA Records, which absorbed her original label Jive in 2011 and has exclusive music rights to X Factor artists.

As one of Sony's Music's marquee acts (33 million albums sold in the U.S. and counting), Spears brings legitimacy as a successful recording artist, something critics of X Factor say was missing in last year's competition, as well as a level of unpredictability and drama that also was largely absent from the Fox show when Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul were judges.

To prepare for the seat alongside judges Cowell and Epic Records chairman L.A. Reid, Spears is undergoing extensive media training. Janet Jackson was also in the running as a potential judge but reportedly bowed out, citing previous commitments to tour.
Dat bolded

My reaction from the Godney thread:

No me gusta. I want X Factor to become the juggernaut it's meant to be and the show needs a great judging panel to accomplish this. I see Godney being the same kind of judge as J Lo, Steven Tyler, Nicole Scherzinger, Xtincta, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton: shit judges.

Even Paula's incoherence provided more of a critique than this line of clowns who are incapable of saying anything other than "you are unique, I felt it." LORDT.

But the Holy Spearit works in mysterious ways, maybe she'll surprise us and become a mean bitch on the show. :lol

Koodo gerl, this circus of media manipulation is growing more stale than Randy's repertoire of catchphrases:

Britney Spears rejects $10M bid host 'X-Factor'

LOS ANGELES, March 9 (TheWrap.com) - Britney Spears has rejected a $10 million offer to host the next season of "The X Factor," TheWrap has learned.

So the question is: How much is Fox going to have to pony up? Try $20 million.

Reports this week that the pop star was considering a $10 million offer to host next fall's seasons of "The X Factor" are out of date, according to a knowledgeable individual in Spears' camp.

The singer rejected that offer three weeks ago and is instead thinking about an offer to become a resident performer at a Las Vegas hotel in the fall, a la Celine Dion.

So here comes a game of chicken. Fox desperately needs a big name to announce on the judge's panel of Simon Cowell's show, now that NBC's hit show "The Voice" will be competing with them in the fall.

Spears' camp wants $20 million.

It's becoming an arms race for singing talent being paid to sit behind tables and…talk.

NBC has put its money where its mouth is, paying Christina Aguilera upward of $10 million to come back and judge the new season of "The Voice." They've given handsome paychecks, if not as much, to the other judges as well.

That pales in comparison to what Fox has shelled out for the "X Factor" judges. Paula Abdul was paid $2.5 million for the last season, according to another knowledgeable insider, and she was announced at the 11th hour.

She was also fired, as were judge Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones.

Hey X-Factor brass, save some hype for the summer why don'tcha? There's still lots more to see.

Britney Spears and Simon Cowell are about to become TV's next power couple. The pop princess is thisclose to signing a big-bucks deal to become a judge on X Factor, multiple sources have exclusively confirmed to E! News.

After weeks of heavy negotiating, Britney's team has finally agreed to a $15 million fee for the role. "Both camps were back and forth on the money but now they have finally come to agreement on the fee," says one insider with intimate knowledge of the pending deal. "That was the big sticking point and now, thankfully, it's been sorted. All they need to do now is work out the smaller points. The fact the money is now set, means that there is nothing stopping this from becoming a reality."

And this will be a package deal: coming along for the ride with Britney is fiancé Jason Trawick.

Britney will officially be a judge on X Factor. Stunt casting if I ever seen it.
That's the same "deal is this close" article that's been circulating around. Simon Cow-ell was LIVE ON AIR with Ryan Seacrest (I believe it was Seacrest), and he pretty much said nothing has been confirmed yet.

Oh okay. I'm interested if she is on the show, but she's pretty much come off as lobotomized to me lately, so I don't know what good she will do after the initial interest runs out. She'll be like a more expensive Paula.

Nah, seek out her MTV special interviews for Femme Fatale. She was charming, bright, and her old dorky self.
