What sense is there to see? The viewership, players, and tournament organizers all benefit from distancing themselves from esports "culture" (or more appropriately, esports' "lack of culture").

People don't want big corporations to run over grassroots events. People don't want the intimacy between top players and viewers to go away. People don't want their content filtered and censored. People don't want to pay per hour for a stream. And so on.

Its not ILLOGICAL to not embrace esports, and to say that doing otherwise "stalls" development is shortsighted. It keeps power in the hands of people who actually know and care about the community; the people whose hard work made everything as big as it is. I'm perfectly OK with keeping it that way, and blazing a separate path to growth...

Crimson, the problem with all the FGC drama is that there are ton of competitive leagues and rivalry forums that have active membership and don't permit members to act like complete fuckwits. Hate to draw attention to the obvious, but look at this very thread. Every new poster gets hazed, everyone's favorite player/team gets ragged on when they lose, seemingly nothing is sacred from a poster's clothes, family, hairstyle, choice in women, choice in cars, school, hometown, favorite music, games, etc. We get away with a lot of shit that isn't tolerated in GAF at large, because we're a community and shit-talking is part of sports. But you'd still be out of line if a girl stepped in the thread and you said, "Who is this ugly whore? Suck my dick bitch.", or if a random LLL posted and someone said "Fuck off and die before I rape your mother noob." And you'd probably be banned as well.

Now if you want to talk that way with other posters, you can easily open a private chat or PM session. Similarly, if any FGC players want to talk shit to each other, they can do so online or in person. But once you start exporting that shit out of the circle of friends, out of context, just broadcasting it for the world to see, you can't be surprised when someone wants to rain on your parade.

Yes, i've helped run major lans, and i've also staked money to get international DJ's to come to town for smaller music communities. I've done quite a broad range of these things. But when these things get to a critical mass, you have to step back and let professionals handle it. It's a really hard decision to make, because you're so attached to it. But in the end, if you want the thing you love to go the next step, you have to.

Uh, not if the professional has a history of dicking you over?

And not if you've been hosting tournaments for so long that you are often BETTER than the professional in everything but providing capital...

And yes, every single one of these games had a "grass roots scene". Of course they did. to say other wise is flat out ignorant.

No they didn't dude. Starcraft never had an EVO. Or Seasons Beatings. Or Final Round. Or APEX. Or Genesis. Those never existed.

To compare the grassroots "scenes" of other games to the FGC is just plain wrong. The sponsors and companies were often there from the start in other communities. Shit, the developers sometimes were the ones to hold the first tournament.

Other communities were BUILT on the backs of corporate sponsors and esports companies. So it makes sense that those same companies reap the rewards. There was never a "transfer of power" phase in Starcraft. What the fuck are you on about.

okay, this part is true BUT lets not pretend that the other communities grew up too, albeit differently. that shit still got weeded out when they made the decision to get serious as a whole.

Oh, they never changed. The players are just not the ones with the microphones. Companies knew they couldn't trust players to be respectful so they just avoid player personality problems as much as possible. They tell players to put music over their voicechat when they stream, put guys like DJWheat on the mic (who knows absolutely nothing about the game but is "kosher"), and make any and all contact be with formalized interviews. And yet things like idra's rage still shine through.

Its fucking men in the 20s and 30s. Some are idiots. The NBA, NFL, whatever, deal with this stuff too. I'm sure all of you remember that Kobe/homophobia topic.

Starcraft players didn't all of a sudden become saints because the community resolved to be more politically correct one day. The assertion that the FGC is more primitive than other communities is rather...comical as well, considering the FGC is by far the oldest of the professional gaming scenes...

The Minnesota Timberwolves offered to trade Michael Beasley to the Los Angeles Lakers for a first-round draft pick, but the Lakers turned them down, according to a league source.

Posted? Nice try, Rodeo. 2nd rounder is all you can get.

It took me forever to fall asleep that night because I was doped up on Roy-swag.

i have to say, roy is definitely one of my favorite players. as painful as it was to watch him torch the mavs in last year's game 4, he was straight up godlike. i wasnt even mad after that loss.

What is this dude? People are being offensive and are acting extremely ignorant and immature. Why do you want to preserve this? Why be defensive? I don't see why people want there to be bigoted and idiotic comments. It makes you all look like immature fools.

And no its not okay if you don't really mean it, because that doesn't matter when you're making someone feel uncomfortable, or like shit.

Hahaha, Reggie Miller's line to the cop about his suit is the funniest thing I've come across in a month.

Edit: Okay, I take that back the comment about Laimbeer's reaction is even better. If anyone has yet to read this article do yourself a favor and take a look.

You bet I want to remove racist, homophobic and sexists bs from any aspect of culture.

Sexist, racist, homophobic little kids grow up into sexist, racist, homophobic men if everyone enables them.

Never going to happen. I can't pardon anyone but I can say it just comes out when you get hit. Not sure you can control that man.

I'm speaking about sports...not games..no excuse for that. If you're that angry about a videogame....quit.

Barkley said he'd like to shoot 20% of the nba fans and then he confirmed it...

If we can more or less take racial slurs out of most competitive sports we can remove sexist shit from competitive videogames.

Steve Nash and The Lakers bench aren't dropping N-bombs when shit gets heavy, except for McBob.

Uh...have you ever heard Kobe man? :-)
Lol, gay ain't a race!

But in seriousness, people took him to town. Rightfully so. He got lots of deserved hate, which is exactly how change happens. Otherwise shit becomes acceptable and normal.

If calling someone a racial slur wasn't frowned upon you bet your ass Troy Murphy would lead the league in receiving flagrant fouls.

I didn't even know that rumor was out there. Also, those positions seem weird. Why would it take Ellis and more to get Lopez?

NFI. The last thing the Warriors need is another player who can't rebound or defend.

I think it only existed to try to get the Magic to bite on a Howard trade, which is stupid thinking.

Theres a report of Dwight wanting to sign with NJ in the offseason in order for them to keep their assets.

He'd lose money but thatd be cool of him for Nets fans. He'd be better off signing out right in Dallas.
