Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

I'm still hoping we'll see a 2GB DDR3 config, i.e. 4x 4Gb chips on a 128bit bus.

edit: or perhaps not - samsung's 4Gb DDR3 (leader in densities) is still limited to 16bit interfaces, i.e. 4 chips would net a 64bit bus :/

Yeah, I really think that makes the most sense for Nintendo, the controller will eat up ram, and I think it will be more likely for them, since they have usually been pretty good with ram in their past boxes. of course, I could see them also doing GDDR5 since they like fast ram and it will be cheaper in the long run.

I'm wondering if they will surprise us and put at least a 32GB SSD inside the box (I am saying flash memory) if it ends up being the steam box, it would have to have a decent size hard drive and a hard drive expansion (Via USB) that is marketed by Nintendo or Steam, somehow I think Microsoft is more likely, since the OS Nintendo comes up with, wouldn't be compatible with most steam games, unless that is more of a streaming service.

Next Gen could end up with 4 consoles, one being steam could really heavily hurt either MS or Sony. Nintendo would also likely not gather the hardcore population that they want.

I would be ok with nintendo having 2 SKUs.

MS next being steam would be boring they have the same game anyway, its would be a big boost for steam to get big N but then i cant see it myself I think we going to end up with a 4 and that going to kill one of the 3 we have now.

*finger cross it Xbox and they go back to just making pc game*

It's not hentai, it's just ecchi anime! and I am not a creep!

This is one argument I am going to lose either way...

"Ecchi (エッチ) is an often used slang term in the Japanese language for erotic fantasy and sexual innuendoes."

It can't get worse than in the N64 days. I didn't have two controllers of the same color. Rainbow gaming at it's best; even the controller included in the console package had a different color than the console :lol

The N64 days were insane. I think I had gold, blue, red, black controllers, it felt like you couldn't match if you wanted to.

Yeah, it makes some sense for them to launch their own console, so 4 next gen would be most likely... (Alienware being the console hardware maker) They could even launch a bare bones Windows OS (basically just remove all the applications) and then put up a custom dashboard, it would still need plenty of ram, but the console itself doesn't have to be too powerful, if they put a HD7850 in there, it would likely out do all 3 upcoming consoles, hell they could put an HD8850 in there when AMD launches them towards the end of the year, but that and 8GB ram should be enough to push above console specs. PC games have never had a base spec across the board, if it happens, PC gaming will increase quite a bit, and MS would likely get a licencing fee from every game, not to mention every game also being released as a game for windows. Microsoft won't be dying out, but Sony would be hurt the most by a 4th console and they also don't have the reserves MS has.

Why would they forego GDDR5?

Because DDR3 is inexpensive.

It also allows them to simplify the memory bus design since they no longer have to accommodate the relatively high frequencies/transfer rates dictated by GDDR5, which also consumes several times more power.

Besides, the bulk of the bandwidth should be supplied by eDRAM. The hit to main memory bandwidth can also be alleviated to a degree by having a good amount of texture cache.

There's also the latency to consider where the CPU is concerned. GPUs don't care about it because they have a ludicrous number of threads to mask latency.

i'm sure you know but they're completely different things

Wouldn't a 96 bit DDR3 interface simply be too slow? Unless I made a calculation error somewhere it would top out around 25 GB/s. That seems awfully low for unified memory on a next-gen system. Basically half of PS3.

I asked earlier, but would this be a similar problem all next gen consoles will face or is this just because of the cost/size factor of the wii u?

Was just watching over the 2005 e3 conference and the thing that really annoyed me was when iwata said, 'the graphics will make you say wow', in regards to the Wii. He blatantly lied to us, when we were going to be getting the same thing we had been seeing for the last 5 years basically. He should have made up for that last year at e3, saying "The graphics will actually make you say wow". Of course this 'wow' in the context of a nintendo console.

Yes. I do know.

Good because explaining that is one thing I do not want to go through again. *shudders*

and we're waaaaaaay off topic here.

On topic, when do you guys think the Wii U is going to be released? Reggie said it would between E3 and the end of the year. I'm thinking end of September.

I'm just guessing here but maybe during then they hadn't decided with the upgraded Gamecube+wiimote, aka the current Wii, or the prototype for the original Revolution, which iirc was a dual core + beefier Radeon card. Don't quite remember where I read it but it might've been this thread.

I'm still sticking to a 7th gen philosophy, Sony having a Wii of their own, and MS and Nintendo having the higher power. Of course not that large of a gap, but Sony have already stated PS4 won't be a PS3-2.

Ooh, release date? I'm saying August-September.

Though I don't see them bleeding money like this gen, I don't see them resting on their laurels watching how Nintendo and Microsoft eat their crowd neither.
If they feel that the only way to avoid third place again is making a super powerful console, they sure will go for it, no matter what.

Since the graphical jump will be smaller this time, making a more powerful console than Wii U and the next Xbox is not going to be hard but it would be such a waste of money (again) because developers most likely will develop for the common denominator in mind, and that, is not going to be the PS4.

Honestly, I'm just seeing all three systems being more or less at parity, similar to the sixth generation. Sony, out of obligation, will have to position the PS4 to be most powerful, since they don't have any distinguishing hardware ala Kinect or the uPad. Xbox 720 will be less powerful than PS4 but stronger than Wii U and have Kinect 2.0. The difference in multiplats will most likely be negligible to the untrained eye and only exclusives and their online services will differentiate the consoles.

This is just me pulling an analysis from my ass though.

I agree with this assessment.

I'm hoping Sony and Microsoft don't have small controllers, sounds weird I know.
I have huge hands and the PS123 and 360 controllers feel weird, that's why I'm happy the Wii U has a big controller.

Since you are far more knowledgeable about those things: How big do you consider the impact of audio processing on memory access? Audio certainly doesn't need a lot of bandwidth, but is extremely unforgiving latency wise, as the human perception is very sensitive to stutter, drop outs or clicks (which is also why video is typically synced to audio and not the other way around). Considering this, shouldn't a dedicated DSP with it's own local buffer compensate for slower memory as well?

Soooooo how long till GDC? I'm genuinely excited for this.

Also, the screen quality form those past few pics looks awesome - great viewing angle, nice resolution/ppi and bright too.

And I'm still of the opinion that they'll make it a tad smaller (and the console too) for E3.

And it'll be called the Nintendo Puu.

It starts tomorrow and ends the 9th, I think we got 30 something hours before it officially starts.

The controller? Please Beedle no.

Just because you have Hulk hands D:

I just think it's a little bit too big... but whatever, the console needs a redesign, definitely (insert sharp edges comment for the 3000xth time here).

I would like a bit of a redesign for both, my guess is the controller is a little bit different but consoles the same. I don't think they really care about the box that much.

All I want is for them to re-add the pre-E3 grips, and keep all the placements.

30 hours before we find out no new news for WiiU.

Good, I can probably catch up to this thread before it starts. BTW Nibel, your hype train was better for e3, just hope that if you continue to edit it, I can get a seat. If you think about this thread, it's been over the top the entire time, so subtle just doesn't work for a hype train.

It's been fun regaling you with tales of Kansas woes and butt pains, but I have to work at 3 pm.

So I will see you peeps later.

If I offended just remember. I drugged the punch.
