Fridge, you say you haven't seen the keynote in a while, but you've been arguing that retina means 300ppi because of what Steve said at the keynote. People have shown you the keynote and quoted it ad nauseam because he clearly describes "retina" as a relationship between PPI and viewing distance. At this point your side of the argument is kind of like, "well, I interpret it differently".

You're talking about Steve Jobs' hidden unknowable intent at the time of his keynote now? Holy shit.

He's been doing that a lot. Except he says it like it's a fact. Over and over and over again, too. Get used to it. We all are.

You should go back and watch then....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIU13A_FE8o&t=8m30s

While unveiling the "Retina" display, Steve specifically said that the ~300ppi threshold is because of the average 10-12 inches that we hold phones away from our eyes when using them. At that distance, a display with over 300ppi makes individual pixels basically indistinguishable. We don't view tablets or laptops at the same distance we do a phone, so it would be very easy for them to claim that a tablet has a "Retina" display, even though it's only ~265ppi. I agree with the chart posted earlier. My 11" MacBook Air only has ~140ppi, but at the normal distance I view it from, I can't distinguish any individual pixels. I don't think they'll ever go so far as to say their laptops have "Retina" displays, but for phones and tablets, sure.

This has been pointed out to him already, but this poster believes he has special insight into the mind of the late Steve Jobs that goes beyond any presentation or common industry knowledge about display resolution , apparently.

Yea, my bad. I rarely venture outside of my subs on GAF, and didn't know this thread existed. I didn't mean to come into the thread, late, and continue beating a dead horse.

Sold my ipad 1 32 gb for 275 on craigslist today.

My body is ready.

I still cant believe someone would pay that.

Guys, you're all wrong iPad 3 won't be retina enough when i hold the thing right up to my face i will be able to see pixels. Fuck Apple.

I know what you mean, I sold my iPad 2 64 Gig for 575 today, was shocked, it had a scratch on it and everything, still got 80% of what I paid for it.

I was only able to get $370 for my iPad2, wifi 16GB.

Too much competition in Los Angeles, was trying to get rid of it at $400 and had no biters.

Was only able to get $350 for my iPad 2 16GB Black WiFi, only 70% of its original value. I'm happy with the result, but it certainly isn't 80% of original value.

Yeah, kinda assumed that since even if it is getting slightly thicker, the top is the same, as are the immediate edge curvatures, so it makes sense that it'd work.

Their dedication is pretty crazy though, lol.

Steve was there for the first and secondiPad launch, I am quite sad that he won't be there to present it. He was the only person that could transfix an entire audience with just a couple slides in keynote. I don't think I can deal with a this steveless presentation

Prices have gone down a little bit due to iPad 3 rumors. I got 80% of my iPad 2's original value when I sold it a week before the event was actually announced.

I wasn't even expecting that much to be honest. Mine had a dent on one corner and a very deep and visible scratch.

Yeah, unfortunately the rest of Apple's executive team isn't really that great to watch on stage...

Jonny Ive is phenomenal. He was the man at Steve's funeral. Dude has charisma and mic skills for days. Problem is, I don't think they'll ever have him be that guy, and I don't think he wants to be that guy.

I think it's gonna be Phil for the time being. I read or heard on one of the million podcasts I listen to that he's been working out, lost some weight, and has more spring in his step now, so that might help, though I never thought enthusiasm was what he lacked. I think Forstall is probably the guy of the future, but they can't really do that now, since his current position is so centered around iOS. He's been kinda hit/miss lately too--he killed @ WWDC for iOS5, but he was a little tentative for the Siri demo, and kinda failed to hammer home just how awesome it was. Steve would have never let a soul leave that room without thinking Siri was the goddamn future of motherfucking computing forever.

The fact iOS UI isn't vector-based to begin with has always boggled my mind. Granted their resolution choices have typically made it easy to get around this, but long-term it's less work ... and would make moving things between different lines (AppleTV, iPad, iPhone, even Mac) trivial.

Regardless, <3 vectors as well.
It probably starts as vectors, but there's not much reason to ship with it.
So I'm thinking about trading my iPad 1 32GB WiFi in at Amazon. Anyone have any experiences with this? I can get $290 for it, and I'd rather not get raped by eBay or deal with scammers on Craig's List. Or should I just sell it on Amazon instead?

I should have done this two weeks ago, I know. But I was lazy.
I sold my iPad on Amazon last year through the "Fulfillment by Amazon" thing, where you ship to Amazon (packing it by their guidelines and whatnot) then they handle everything. The guy that bought mine wanted to return it cause some BS about buying it on accident, and after a few emails I figured out that he just had to go through Amazon's normal return procedure, so that was a nice part about letting them handle everything.

I'm not sure but I think it's 6% for that...which I didn't lose cause apparently they destroy the returned items? I got paid near the full amount minus some smaller charge (money transfer or shipping?), it was very confusing, but I guess it worked out. The hardest part was just competing with others that have a bunch of feedback and newer devices.

I'll probably try Craigslist again (failed there before going to Amazon last year) then go to Amazon if nothing goes through. Depending on your location it could be a pain or pretty easy, there was a crapload of iPads on sale around me.
That's what I assumed. In other words it will look identical.

Obviously they have the option to offer scaling, but since the results aren't always entirely predictable, I'm not sure that's the direction Apple will go in.
Scaling is either a straight pixel double (identical) or smoothed, it's pretty annoying. Some apps look better smoothed, while stuff with pixel art ends up blurred, or the other way around, and there's no manual way to control it on the end user side. Last I looked into it it had to do with the drawing method of the app, something the dev has to mess with.

The first iPad keynote bombed.

Get ready for Schillermania.

"Come with me if you want to live"

I'm amazed and pretty happy that somebody bought my iPad2 64GB wifi model for $600. I listed it on a local classifieds site (gumtree) and had a call within an hour. He came to have a look that afternoon and paid cash on the spot - didn't even haggle. I was prepared to sell it for $550

I was also going to include the leather smart cover and keyboard dock (both official apple gear) but he was really eager to buy it so I didn't have to sweeten the deal

I'm going to be one of those freaks who line up the day before and camp out for the day 1 launch. Can't wait! I miss my iPad...

Wait!! I see someone wrote this:

Under my username quoted further up this page!

I want to make it clear, that this is NOT me, I repeat, this is NOT me.

How could someone get access to my account??? I am logged out everywhere.

Or has the person quoting that post just put my name in it? What's going on? =/

EDIT
It seems like japtor has just made a quotation mistake?

As for the thread, I'm still contemplating buying an iPad 3 64GB, but instead of a 3G device (I don't think we'll get a 4G one in Denmark sadly), I'll stick to WiFi only, and keeping my iPad 2.

Hmm. Having an option to get $660 for my iPad 2 16GB 3G, along with a case and screen protector. Everything totaled $780 as new, so that's a 16% loss after 9 months of ownership. Generally an okay deal when selling a used Apple product, I suppose?

(I live in Scandinavia, hence those price levels.)

Yeah, 4G is still pretty young in our dark region of the world, lol. I'm confident we'll see LTE in next year's model, though. Also considering ditching mobile data altogether, just barely needed it at all in the iPad 2 (though it is pretty nice to take the internet outdoors in the summer months.)

Will this by the year where the iPad 1 is no longer supported? Or how is Apple going to move people forward to the iPad 2 and 3 this year (other then the new screen of course).

My guess is that at least some features in iOS 6 won't be included for the iPad 1. They'll probably keep updating it for a while, though with fewer and fewer new features - 256MB to 1024MB RAM is a 400% difference, you can only go so far dragging past technology with you.

So a site got all the rumored parts together and assembled them. Conclusion: Smart Cover still works!

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/03/04/ipad-3-parts-put-together-on-video-ipad-2-smart-cover-still-works/

I have to laugh at myself for enjoying this video so much. Only would an Apple product have jazzy music and sweet angles to get you pumped up to see a freaking dock connector.

Awesome to see the Smart Cover still work. I gave mine to my sister but have no problems just buying another one. I might go with the same dark gray cover again.

For those with the light gray smart cover, does it get dirty easily?

Haha wow. Fridge bases his entire incorrect idea of retina on what he thinks Steve Jobs said over 2 years ago and he says he hasn't even watched when Jobs said since that event 2 years ago? Despite the fact many people linked him to clips of that press event to show what Jobs said is the complete opposite of what he thinks and retina has to do with viewing distance?

What.

Everything about PPI resolution should factor in viewing distance. That goes for displays, digital cameras, and digital prints. It's kind of the 'unknown factor' when it comes to consumers, because it's confusing and unclear.

It's like the megapixel wars in digicams - if people never crop, and only ever view online or print at small sizes, it's not necessary to go beyond a certain resolution. But the uniformed consumer doesn't care, just caring for a 'better numerical value', without knowing better.

Obviously, there's a case to be said for maybe wanting to future proof, like getting maximum quality incase you do something with it later.

Still, when it comes to displays, resolution absolutely effects your optimal viewing distance, so
I do appreciate you wanting 300 dpi, for example if you wanted to view around a foot away from your iPad (I know I actually often do when I'm in bed). But for the average use case, it's much further than that, so a slight decrease in DPI actually has the same effect of 'indiscernible pixels'. It's about what is typically used.

And of course, you're right, marketing may one day use the term for a given distance. But whatever, marketing has always been like that.

Thanks for the considerate, thoughtful response, mrkgoo. It is much appreciated and I agree with many of your points. There is a chance that, with the iPad 3 in my hand and resting comfortably in my lap while in use, I won't even realize that the PPI isn't as dense as I'd hoped. Perhaps they will also fix some of the light-bleed issues that afflicted early iPad 2 models, though I don't know if it will ever illicit that purely magical feeling I had when I first played with an iPhone 4. Because the display was seated so close to the glass images seemed to jump off the device and the sharp text gave me such an emotional, immediate connection that I actually prefer reading iBooks on my phone rather than my tablet.

I suppose I am holding too high a line for Apple in this case. As I stated before the line was set by Jobs' own quest for perfection. I see Cook as another Ballmer, and, while some have intimated it, I fully expect this keynote to be unwatchable without the maestro at helm.

To make this a bit more personal, someone very close to me is near the end-stages of a long battle with cancer, and experiencing the gradual wasting away of mind, body and spirit has made it hard for me to go back to view old pictures or movies we made during better times. In the same way I don't watch old Jobs' keynotes because I feel emotional given the context of his long battle with pancreatic cancer. That's just how I am.

Hmm, I'm still undecided if I want the iPad 3 with 3G or without.
I own an iPhone 4s, too.
I would recommend the plain iPad 3. It is quite easy to jailbreak your iPhone4S and purchase a cheap cydia software - I believe it's less than $5 - to enable tethering. I've used this for months without being caught by AT&T. I do stay under my 2GB limit, which probably keeps me under their radar.

We've told you a thousand times, and you've admitted yourself you haven't watched the keynote since it happened. Jobs mentioned viewing distance. He was as clear and unambiguous as he could have possibly been. His exact words were "when held at a distance of 10 to 12 inches". That's not paraphrasing, or miscontrued. Those are Jobs own words.

The keynote will certainly be less interesting without Jobs, no question there. I've just always kept reminding myself that presentation technique can be learned - none of those executives may carry the charm and charisma of Jobs, but I actually found myself somewhat enjoying Schiller's speaking at the education keynote. I thought his more serious style fit that event, though that obviously won't necessarily make him fit a huge product introduction. I hope they get Scott Forstall to do the actual reveal for iPad 3, he radiates a heck of a lot more on-stage charisma than Cook or Schiller, in my opinion.

Really hoping for that LCD-glass lamination also. Creating the illusion that the image is actually lying on the surface, and not just below it, is simply a no-brainer to have in such a high-quality touch screen. If they skip it, it'll have to be due to technical difficulties, rather than some design/ease-of-repairability choice.

It will be Cook talking sales and numbers to open, Schiller to announce and host the iPad 3 reveal and Forstall to talk software. Ive and Mansfield will appear in the video.

Okay, this might not be the right thread and this may be a dumb question, but...

I know Apple product launches are a lot different than other tech products. I've never PURCHASED an Apple product, but I'd really like to get my wife an iPad3 on launch day. What are the chances of picking one up just walking into a store? I'm guessing zero. Are there places that take preorders for them? How does one go about doing it without waiting in line for days to reserve a spot?

Well the ipad 1 is the same power as the 4g touch and I still play games on my touch no problem for the most part, so it's still a good ipad to own imo.

And that's what I alluded to above - the closeness of the screen to the glass - and how Apple seemingly removing that separation - made a world of difference between the using iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Hopefully that tech is brought over to the iPad 3 as well.

So because you know someone with cancer you get to change what Steve Jobs and apple define retina as?
