"(One of them) poured the gasoline, then flicked the Bic, and said, 'This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve, white boy.'"

What could he have possibly done to deserve being set on fire?

Inb4 somebody seriously asserts that sociopathic behavior in teenagers is something that has only started happening since the 2000s.

would you disagree that while this isn't a new phenomenon, the level if violence used does seem to increased dramatically the past few years, especially with regards to children.

Hate crime or not, that's fucking atrocious. Kids life might be ruined. Hell, he's lucky to BE alive.

If the article is accurate and he only got first degree burns, he'll probably be okay. First degrees don't blister, so that would preclude severe scarring as well.

That said, this is a horrific crime and I hope those responsible spend a long time behind bars.

I wonder how these kids are raised that they decide to do something like this. My friends and I weren't angels but we would never do something even remotely stupid as this.

Damn sad that it happened to anyone, let alone a little kid. I don't want to call him "lucky," but if he got off with 1st degree burns he was really quick to douse it.

yes, crime is down in nearly every category since like the early 90s in the US. It's only our perception that is different, no story goes unnoticed for one.

It SEEMS to have increased, but only because of increased media exposure.

Put whoever is guilty away for a long long time, but I still have an issue with "hate crime" legislation. Someone poured gas on a kid and lit him on fire, that's sufficiently hateful regardless of anyone's race, religion or sexual orientation.

If everyone was white or black, or if they said they did it because they didn't like the shirt he was wearing is that somehow better?

Glad he is recovering in any case. People are sick.

The reactions to this tragedy are strange. But it is neogaf and double standards are everywhere. I'm just wondering how big of an uproar would it have been if the roles were reversed?

Poor kid, really. I feel bad, because this might affect his studies, social life etc...

Edit: It's hilarious too because you know a lot of people in this thread are holding back as this thread is a ban trap. I'm guilty of holding back as well.

This makes me feel sick. It's so hard to believe there are people out there that would even think of doing this. There was a similar case a few years ago where I used to live. I was a teenager and I remember spending a few months scared as hell thinking someone would just light me up, especially on the bus with people behind me. I once had a panic attack when the person behind me decided to spark up a fag.

The reactions to this tragedy is very extraordinary. But it is neogaf and double standards are everywhere. I'm just wondering how big of an uproar would it have been if the roles were reversed?

what reaction do you actually have an issue with?

How should people react? It seems to me everyone hates that this happened and hopes he has a speedy recovery. and that the perpetrators are prosecuted appropriately.

what?? why would people think this is any less fucked up if the roles were reversed?

Which thread are you reading? All I'm seeing are people recognizing the severity of the crime, lamenting the purported racist motivations, and a few who don't necessarily like hate crime legislation in any context.

Where regular violence seeks to make a victim out of one person, hate crimes are intended to instill fear in a segment of the community. The actions of the crime is the same regardless of motive, but the intended outcomes are wildly different so it's a different crime.

Your shirt analogy doesn't really work the way you framed it, because "not liking someone" isn't the motive of a hate crime.

I'd hate to be wrong on this, and I'm not sure just how this could be made up, but my spidey sense is tingling like crazy on this story.

But racism only goes one way.......right?

There wasn't any serious injury so people aren't getting as worked up. Threads about burners are usually a lot worse. Still, I really hope they catch the people that did this and prosecute them for attempted murder.

Actually, that is exactly what the motive is for a hate crime. The person does it because they hate someone because of their race, religion, or sex(ual orientation).

It could be to instill fear into that person's racial community, but most of the time, they're doing it because they're racist, mean, sadists that want to see someone be hurt or killed because they don't carry the same skin pigmentation as them.

please, do explain
I really want to hear it

and really, this is another part of the bias, no one would even dream to make a post like this if the races were reversed

Well that sucks, but I don't see how this is a good starter for a discussion.

Subtle. 10/10

What are you talking about? It is a despicable act, and even worse because it was a racist attack. I hope they are put away for a long time. Burning another living creature alive is just totally inhumane, I don't even think I could to that to someone I hated.

But racism only goes one way.......right?

No institutionalized racism only goes one way. (power versus those without)

one time a kid threw a mix of bleach and cleaners and hotsauce in my eyes as I walked home from school.

Given how I know how Bleach is like a million fireants eating at your orifices, how the hell are you still able to see from that ordeal? You should be blind!

Also I hope those kids get the book thrown at them with the fullest of full force.

But racism only goes one way.......right?

Ahh, I see, trying to cause some heated discussions by phrasing your question as if there's some controversy not being addressed. All to then make a nonexistent point...

Right, I see... good work....

But please, try and stay on topic...

Horrific. I'm also surprised that the burns were only first degree, though...does that kid have partial invulnerability to flame?

How about you shut the fuck up. Dont tell me I'm somehow guilty of being racist or reverse racist or whatever the fuck is going on in your post just because the story seems a little fishy to me.

Now if you'd have asked me why I might think this story sounds fishy I would have responded in a more gentlemanly fashion. I probably would have told you that 2 dudes walking around with gas seems unlikely to me, and furthermore that they would have the balls to douse him and light him on fire when he was on his own porch was even more suspicious. Also something about the mothers statements is what set off the spidey sense.

Just to clarify. If the roles were reverse, this thread would have been on fire. I'm not going to get into that because that's a whole can of worms. I did get banned once for calling people out on loosely throwing our the term "racism".

Just simply put, if this was a case of "a white kid burning a black kid", this thread would hit 50+ pages, the media would be all over it, causing an uproar beyond believe.

As one poster said, "racism only goes one way...... right?".

Anyways, I'm out.
