Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Last year disappointed me, and I was going in with a fraction of the hype from this year. We learned about Project Cafe in... April 2011. That was two months before E3.

There's still 3 months til E3 right now ; _ ;

you can't escape the hype of e3.

Honestly, I think they're paranoid about some secret feature being stolen from them. So they're good at it.

If, for example, Microsoft decides to follow Nintendo into Tablet Controllerland, Nintendo might want to hide one or two final features until it's too late for Microsoft to adapt in response..

If developers are aware of these features, Microsoft and Sony are aware of them as well.

But that doesn't make sense in this particular case. Nintendo's committed to launching the Wii U this year, while MS and Sony haven't even announced consoles yet. Nintendo could wait until the month of launch to reveal some secret feature, and there would still be room for their competition to adapt.
Not necessarily. They could in Wii U incorporate a Memory Expansion compartment, just like the one Nintendo 64 features. But they can just have it there dormant until they think it is safe to unveil it, it could be for example just two weeks ahead of the Xbox Durango/PlayStation 4 release. Let's say Wii U launches with 2GB internal memory while its competitors pack 3-4 GB; they could depending on time intervals between console launches introduce a 4-6 GB upgrade pack which could help them rival Microsoft and Sony, at least in some areas.

But I understand what you are saying, a strategy like the one I suggested wouldn't make sense if Nintendo's playing hardball when it comes to keeping secrets. Because eventually (probably on launch day) someone will figure out what that compartment is for and will probably share this information for Microsoft and Sony to adapt.

True, but we don't quite know when Microsoft or Sony is launching. I doubt that they're going in the first half of 2013 (it would be a shocker, I think), but Nintendo would want to give them as little time as possible to move in reaction. At least in theory..

Except that Nintendo has this pesky habit of not always telling developers about the features of the console they're working on.

For better or worse, Nintendo seems like a very paranoid company when it comes to their new hardware. It might not always hold-up to logical scrutiny {you guys are fantastic at poking holes in this.. =) }, but I figured I'd put it out there.

But wouldn't that recommend everybody to have an HDD?

The real question I have concerning downloadable "retail-sized" games is: If Nintendo is going the "little bit of internal flash for necessary saves, external hard drive for game installs (and perhaps also saves)" path, which seems likely concerning what we've heard, how will they handle the seemingly inevitable Nintendo-branded hard drive?

Will there be an sku with the drive bundled? That way they could, say, sell the Wii U Control Deck sku for $299
$249, damnit!
and then the Wii U Deluxe Set sku for a hundred dollars more with a 1TB
lol, more like 0.5TB -- shortchanging on media is an industry standard
drive built in.

Maybe they could make it so that the hard drive stacks comfortably on top of the system. The box for the Wii U from E3 '11 seemed like it didn't have anything to mount on top of, though. It was just a rounded rectangular solid.

I hope it will not be seen as "awful teasing that deserves to die in the sunset with a chocolate bar sacrifice" by some :p

It's INFO guys, the first pictures of GDC day 3, the opening of the showfloor.

Now, we can only hope we'll see the Nintendo place.

Don't the memory chips have to be reeeeally close to the cpu/gpu these days? External RAM expansions might be a lot slower, effectively, than what's built in.

Also, the N64 memory expansion wasn't taken advantage of in many games. Expansions after the fact almost always do badly, especially if they don't have some incredible hook to drive in customers (like the Balance Board or Kinect had).

Finally, someone gets it. Wasn't expecting much Wiiwoo related to begin with, but the lack of booth babes really hurts.

Nintendo better bust out their army of babes for E3 2012. >:(
Remember the 3DS presentation? Boy, that was awesome. 2 bazillion babes out of nowhere and they where all thethered to the new nintendo handheld.

Great times!
