Where the hell is my siri mind control activated apple tv? I was promised that Apple would be revolutionizing TV interfaces?

=(

So is Siri on the "new iPad"? and if yes... is it also on the iPad 2? Because iPad 2 has an A5... which is the main reason Apple said the iPhone 4 didn't support Siri.

No it's not. Only Voice Dictation.

Did anyone get iOS 5.1 yet? I'm looking forward to trying out Voice Dictation on my iPad 2.

Well that'd be awesome. Since they won't allow me to cancel an order, least they can do is let me return it for free lol.

assuming this website crap is due to demand, I'd say you won't have an issue getting rid of an extra one once you decide which colour to keep

No I wasn't. Where did I say I was? He wanted an example of something that was of high expectations or unexpected. Haptic feedback would have been surprising and unexpected.

He asked "what would be impressive"?

And you said haptic feedback. Or "some changes to the OS". And then dodge the further explanation by saying.."Oh there's plenty of things I could list, but I wont..."

By your standards I don't think anything other than the original iPhone announcement would have ever been impressive. Through leaks and common sense all the subsequent announcements have been products that were already well-rumored or outright leaked.

The haptic stuff was pure bullshit dreamed up by morons who wanted to read too much into the invitation Apple sent out. You were seriously expecting a tablet with haptic feedback? I guess every tablet announcement for the forseeable future is going to be a pretty big disappointment.
Charming. It could have been in there. It's not futuristic madness... the tech is ready to go. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it and decided that it took too much of a hit on the CPU and battery life to make it into this model. Who knows, they might have weighed up the pro and cons of haptic or retina...

Thanks for the answers to my above questions. The AppleTV seems like a no brainer for me since I like to play music off my iPhone through my receiver but hate having to connect it via a two foot long cable and leave it hanging there. Is it pretty easy for other people with iOS devices to connect to the AppleTV wirelessly to stream stuff, for parties and random get togethers?

Still torn on the iPad purchase. Never owned one (iPhone 3G owner originally and upgrade once to a 4) and having a hard time convincing myself I want it enough to justify dropping $600 or so on it.

My phone already has haptic feedback ...

Yeah ... it vibrates slightly when I press a key.

Look into it Apple.

I updated my iPad 2 to 5.1, but there is no microphone button for dictation, nor can I find a setting to enable it. Only for the new iPad, maybe?

The lack of Siri being due to the iPad not being an always-connected device strikes me as an after the fact justification. A 4G version exists, and for others, it's perfectly reasonable to expect to connect to Wifi ... Just like everything else on the web.

I think they just decided not to for whatever reason... And we'll probably see it someday. Might just be a feature they're holding back to add value to future revisions.

I imagine they're allowing Siri to remain the highlight feature of the 4S, at least for a little while longer. It'll probably be ubiquitous next generation.
I think the whole 'in beta' part is what's stopping it. I'm still glad we finally get inline dictation, though.

I'm also interested to see how they eventually integrate Siri into the iPad, given the extra screen real state and all that.

Seriously considering getting an iPad 3 (or whatever it will be called). How important is the harddrive for programs on the ipad? is the 16gb sufficient?

This, plus it's available only on the phones which are constantly connected to some sort of network no matter what. I'd imagine they had a debate on including it in a Wi-Fi only device and settled on a functionality not dependent on such a thing.

They didn't do it because it's gimmicky as shit.

why does siri even need a connection? new ipad has voice dictation which presumably doesn't need a net connection? is it just the difference between understanding the words you speak, and makign meaning from a question?

Seems perfectly easy to just require an internet connection - no different from google maps not working if you're offline. Lots of ipad features require a net connection.

By the way... Any word of Siri finally getting Canadian support? (directions, etc.) We're a bigger market than Australia, which has it already I believe, and the American accent for Siri's voice/listening works fine.... What gives?

Would haptic feedback not be impressive? I didn't say the hardware wasn't nice or impressive. What I said was nothing announced in the hardware was unexpected. He said it exceeded his expectations. What announced was unexpected? Is anyone at all surprised by a Retina display?

Charming. It could have been in there. It's not futuristic madness... the tech is ready to go.

The tech isn't bullshit, but the idea that it'd be in the iPad clearly was. Other than 2 words from the invitation there was no other evidence it would be in the new iPad. Nothing from the rumor mill or supply chain at all. Just very foolish hypothesizing.

Two questions for ye Apple faithful (almost assured to get lost in a sea of posts, but hey why not try?):

1. When you're streaming music from an iOS device to an Apple TV product, does it pass video as well as sound through the HDMI port? Ideally I'd like to buy the thing, hook it up to my receiver, and have some sort of on-screen display on the TV. My current receiver has a very basic black and white song title & artist deal when you hook up an iPhone via a wired connection, and I'm wondering if Apple TV has something similar or if it's entirely displayed on the mobile device.

2. To those getting an iPad at 32 or 64GB, how do you justify the extra storage space? I've had a 32GB iPhone 4 that I've not come close to maxing out and am thinking that if I dive in, I'd go with a 16GB model but am curious how people fill up their iPads.

Bonus third question- how is the audio quality when you're wirelessly streaming music from iOS to Apple TV? Any quality loss?

I felt that 16gb's was too crowded for just my use of apps. Games are creeping up in size and the 32gb model gives me enough to not have to dump half my stuff. I dont see the need to go beyond that though, especially for the cost.

That isn't haptic feedback. Look into it.

Haptic technology, or haptics, is a tactile feedback technology which takes advantage of the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user.

Tactile haptic feedback is becoming common in cellular devices. Handset manufacturers like LG and Motorola are including different types of haptic technologies in their devices; in most cases, this takes the form of vibration response to touch. Alpine Electronics uses a haptic feedback technology named PulseTouch on many of their touch-screen car navigation and stereo units.[13] The Nexus One features haptic feedback, according to their specifications.

Suck it.

Typing on Apple's touch screen keyboard ... lacks ... a certain feel and acknowledgement. It's really just a simple use of a phones vibration but it makes everything much more tactile and instant feedback lets you know you hit your mark.

For instance you noticed how half the time it always takes someone a few touches to unlock an iphone/ipad ... they hit then drag ... realised they've missed, hit and drag again. With a simple haptic feedback you'll know when you've got the slide and when it's being correctly slid into place.

Suck it.

If your phone's implementation is anything like the original Droid, I think it's a bit shit. That's the phone I had before my 4S, and the 4S keyboard is much, much easier to type on for me.

Suck it.

The screen vibrating doesn't let you know you hit your mark. All it lets you know is that you hit something that triggered a vibration.

Isn't Apple building a new data center? I would guess maybe another reason is that with probably 40 million or so iPad 3s that will be sold this year... Siri would probably be a huge strain on the NC data center.

I bet the haptic stuff was just started by the Senseg company to get publicity.

Swype >>>> Apple Keyboard.

Can type twice as fast as other touch screen interfaces, ten times as easily.

Even die hard apple fanboys have a hard time not being impressed when I can bash out a long text in seconds in front of their eyes.

If I had a nickel for every "how did you write that so fast" "what are you doing?" I'd be a millionaire.

Actually it does, and it's better than typing on in a sentnce yu havt reaised yor mssng lettr to. Try it before you knock it.

Plus makes the phone interface far more tactile, you know the phone has recognised you click that link, you know the phone has recognised you click on that app. Hence it's called tactile feedback. Besides on a touch screen it's sort of hard to see whatever your touching react when your fingers in the way of the button your clicking.

tbf, your first post says, "Apple exceeded every expectation I had.".

Then a few minutes later you posted a list of a couple things you thought should have been improved (like front facing camera). We're all obviously ordering it but your first post did come off a bit melodramatic given it was mostly the expected upgrades. There was nothing really earth shattering about the upgrade. shrug

You just can't handle the hyperbole needed to describe greatest hardware upgrade to an existing device that man has ever seen. The Gods couldn't have even dreamed up a feature-set so complete, yet priced so affordable.

Do they still make Flip video cameras? I wouldn't want to be the poor sap who invested in that flash in the pan turd.

If you invested before Cisco acquired them, you'd be pretty happy. Whoever it was at Cisco who decided to buy them is probably somewhat less happy.

It's impressive that you have such contempt for the hype surrounding these and yet clamored to buy one day-one just like everyone else. I respect an enigma.

No.

Copy and paste it guys.
Only missed the 128GB, which honestly felt like the only risky prediction I made. Oh yeah!

not sure what the holdup is. it’s a bummer for sure. (I just checked on 5.1 and restaurants and directions are still a no-go.)

Like I said, I had a Droid with the 'haptic feedback' option turned on.

I thought the implementation was shit. Of course, part of that was due to the Android software just sucking ass back then and on that particular device (I'm sure things are better now on newer devices). It just vibrated whenever I hit something that triggered a vibration. I'm constantly looking at the screen anyway, so I can tell when a character I type registered. In fact, with the Android keyboard lag, I'd often get vibrations for key presses that didn't actually register. Man that thing was a janky mess.

Regarding Swype, I only tried the beta for a little while, but I didn't like it personally. I have a friend who swears by it, but I didn't find it very intuitive at all. I'm sure it's great if you get used to it, but I really have no interest.

Also, if you're worried about missing characters, you probably haven't actually typed using a modern iOS device.
