Sad, sad story about my sister's new kitten

She got this little bugger last weekend. It was so adorable, barely two pounds... she named him Gomez. Tonight she called past midnight crying to my father that she woke up and found him dead in her bed. She wouldn't admit it but my dad and I are expecting she suffocated/crushed it in her sleep. I am so disturbed by this right now. I don't think my mom or my grandmother are going to take this very well. It's just horrifying and I can't get it through my mind how she thought sleeping next to it was a good idea. Complete lapse in judgment and I'm so angered and saddened by it. After I heard this I went and hugged my dog for awhile... Should I let my sister tell my mom in time or should I gently break the news to her in the morning? I'm just at a loss for words right now and I want to know what GAF thinks.

Sorry for the feel-bad thread of the night.

Let your sister tell her when she's ready. It's sad that it happened but there isn't any point getting mad at your sister about it.

Sorry to hear. Man, why did I even come into this thread after seeing the title? Maybe I was expecting some good news out of it. Heh. Cute picture tho.

Sorry to hear that, hopefully this doesn't traumatize her enough to not want to get another pet sometime in the future. I've slept in the same bed with my parents dogs many times (and would like to point out that they have nearly suffocated me on many occasions with their toxic gas) and can't imagine what it would be like to wake up and find them lifeless next to me :(

Cats can be pretty light sleepers. I would think that it would jump up and gtfo before a human smothered it.

...because that looks more like a cat than a kitten kitten, like a baby cat type kitten.

I have kicked my cat off my bed with a full force kick so many times. I always jolt awake and go hug him afterward but damn. He's 17 now.

Maybe rolled onto him a few times, but I always woke up. I'm a light sleeper.

I would guess the cat naturally died in its sleep. I really, really doubt that she could have managed to do that inadvertently. Especially with that old of a kitten. There is nothing really dangerous about sleeping with a 2lb. kitten. Maybe if he were like a 2 month old. But that cat lOoks like its nearly 1/2 year.

And there it is.

Was waiting for it.

EDIT- This was in reference to ChefRamsay's post, which has now been edited beyond recognition. He said what we were all thinking. If you weren't thinking that, you are a liar.

I had a kitten for a couple months (had to give him away :( ) that was MUCH smaller and slept with him all the time. He was fine. Sounds like something else.

Your sister probably knows damn well enough that she fucked up and fucked up badly. Sad story but I'm sure you don't need to make the sister feel more like shit.

Where in my post did I say I wanted to make her feel bad? I already feel super bad for her.

How big is her bed? I hope it's not a single. I've slept in queens with a cat and a woman. But not a kitten. I know what we're all assuming has happened, but it's entirely possible that something else happened, and legally, there's no reason to assume without knowing all of the facts.

I thought I read an article recently about how co-sleeping with children isn't anywhere near as bad as people thought it was, and that death from it is actually pretty uncommon. I would have imagined this applied in this case. Now I need to try to find the article.

When my cat was real small my ex and I put her in a little cat bed on the bed to protect her from getting smothered by either of us.

From what I read, it's very uncommon to smother a child unless you are obese or under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Is your sister either of those? Because I would imagine that same thing applies to pets.

I've heard worse, a friend of mine bought a little kitten, got it desexed one day and brought it home. They woke up the next day to find a trail of blood through the house leading to an open drawer where they found her, she'd obviously pulled her stitches out and bled out during the night :( poor thing

how is this even possible, i sometimes fall to sleep with all kinds of shit on my bed and i never once laid on something. isn't there some statistics that mothers never crush there babies if they sleep in the same bed?

unless she's a really heavy sleeper or went to bed after having been drinking i don't really see how she could have smothered the cat without noticing it. if the cat was suffocating or being crushed he would have reacted somehow.

our kitten sleeps with us all the time. i used to worry about potentially hurting him, but it was never an issue so far. just last night i put my leg over him by accident, he got up and just moved over. if i'd have ever rolled on top of him he would have definitely tried to wiggle and claw out. i just don't know how you wouldn't feel that.

seems more likely to me that he died in his sleep due to a heart problem or something. did she ever take him to the vet for kitten checkup and shots? that's when a lot of potential health problems are identified.

If she was sleeping with it, be glad it was a cat and not a baby. I've heard horror stories of mother's accidentally suffocating their babies by sleeping with them. I know it's horrible, but hopefully she at least learned a lesson from it and won't do it again.
