Sad, sad story about my sister's new kitten

If those are her arms in the pic then I can see how it could happen :/

I dont know, the cat to me just looks to big to be crushed. Even if it was pinned it would have attempted some type of struggle. I think no matter what your sister would have awoken regardless of how asleep she was or any other factor.

I'd think a new born kitten and up till it can be adopted maybe, but that size...I dont think so.

Ive got a couple cats now. Ive delivered tons of litters through out my life and had ton of kittens sleep in my bed/bedroom. I had a total of 13 cats about a year or two ago...never less then 2 and always had at least 5 growing up. Ive had 8 kittens sleep in my bedroom just a year or two ago that size or smaller.
Ive seen alot of kittens just "die" in that time, and Ive felt a ton of little kitten claws in the middle of the night...I think this one might have just died man.

You REALLY have to be in a coma to crush a kitten that size or theres some insane factor were you have nerve damage or something.

Humans have some evolutionary trait where they are generally able to sense what is around them enough in their sleep to not crush an infant. And the struggle...I don't buy your serial crusher theory.

That's really sad :(
Though I can't believe she crushed it, must have been something wrong with the poor kitty before. Still, must be a horrible thing to wake up next to your dead pet.

Time to hug my cats now

Yeah, I think it would have at least tried to scratch furiously before dying. It probably happened due to illness or maybe because of something it ate the day before.

Eh are you people saying that you can't crush/suffocate small animals in your sleep because it's not uncommon. Even babies get killed this way. Some people sleep like logs, I personally would wake up to the smallest of sound/sensation, but my gf for example wouldn't wake up if I put the lights on and started to watch TV in the room.

Come on.

Maybe if your tv scratched and struggled for dear life she might though?

A one year old baby and a one year old cat are vastly different, though.

You were thinking it? That's amazing because it was sort of suggested very early on in the thread. The assumption was that it would be you know, kind of raw, uncouth, and insensitive to come out with that, so we sort of agreed not to? You know?

edit:
the cat does seem to be saying something in that pic though.

I've seen cats squeeze through the smallest cracks under doors or behind furniture, I find it hard to believe they could be suffocated under a person in a bed. I guess crazier things have happened, but my guess is the cat had some health problem and just died on it's own.

Regardless of the reason its always sad when a pet dies.
My wife and I just had a kitten put to sleep that we had adopted
in October 2011.
We found her partially paralyzed one morning and after some
testing they found lymphoma in her spine.

This. And if you're seriously thinking about confronting your family with the knowledge that your sister accidentally suffocated it, even if it's true, what are you thinking!? Keep it to yourself.

You should let your sister tell your mother and other family, and you also you could ask how the cat died, or how she thinks it died, but don't harp on it. Was it a dumb thing to do, letting it sleep in the same bed? Yeah, but don't keep telling her that she should feel like shit, because, likely, she already feels that way, and making it worse won't make it better.

I love dogs and cats (a little bit), and I've only had1 dog, and I think I would feel like the shittiest person in the world if something like this happened, so try to put yourself in her shoes before you do anything,

With that breed, I wouldn't be surprised if it suffocated by itself thanks to it's disfigured skull. While these cats look cute, they often have serious respiratory problems.

my cats always find a way to sit on top of me - not that they are in any danger of being suffocated by me

but they're not exactly kittens anymore (that's really a kitten in the OP?)

Yes I am saying that. Of course there are rare exceptions, but humans do not do this. There's a reason you don't roll off the side of your bed every night. Cases of infant death when cosleeping are more commonly due to getting tangled in sheets, trapped by the headboard, or involve a parent who was drinking or on drugs.

A sober person will not roll over and crush a small baby or pet. And in this specific case, unless she is very obese I'm quite sure the cat would struggle enough to wake her up. Unless of course, she was drunk or on drugs. I'd bet the cat died naturally.

I was searching for an appropriate Elmyra Duff picture, and some results actually are women strangling their cats into posing for selfshots. Wasn't expecting that.

The OP picture does suggest a 'bulky' frame though...

What's done is done.
It might have been your sister sleeping too heavily on top of the kitten, it mightn't.
She probably realizes this herself, and is very unlikely to sleep with a small animal again.

My condolences, it was a cute kitten :(

Come on, credit where credit is due.

PhoenixDark started it with some masterfully subtle work.

EDIT- Well, I guess he wasn't first, but still it was all class.

You and your family should tell her its not her fault and all that crap to make her feel better good god. First of all it was her cat, and she only had it for a week. And you feel bad and kinda angry and all that shit?

You should hug your sister instead of that dog.. christ.

I'll take a ban for this if needed.

Well this thread is going places. This might actually top that Hitler alien topic a while back. But to contribute, I'd say comfort your sister and wait to get a new cat. Also, make sure when your get the new one, make sure your sister doesn't suffocate the poor thing.

Saw the title, skimmed the part in the Op where you hugged your dog in grief, made a decision and
