GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Yes I did. I overwrote the original file (which didn't have the argument ios=248 line).

*meta.xml*
Weird then.
tinders had a similar problem, which he solved by deleting some extra-info that was added to the .xml.

The other thing would be to double-check the steps to install d2x to see if you didn't missed something.

Guess Clipper might pop by sooner or later. :p

Ok, I delete the meta.xml, put back the original meta.xml, then edit it via the CFG Configurator - and now it works (although it still show 249 first, then 248).

Now... I cannot get the forwarder to work. It just reboot me into the Wii screen. This is the version I downloaded: FIX94's Cfg Forwarder Channel v8 or later from here.

I verified the app path is correct sd:/apps/usbloader/boot.dol. I installed the IOS236 before this.

Another bigger problem is, during the installation of IOS 236 I get a Exception (DSI) occurred. No idea what is this, but after rebooting I tried to install it again and it worked...

I just ran Raving Rabbids Party Collection via CFG, and after quitting to the Wii Menu, I saw an error message after the health warning: "The system files are corrupted." Then the system froze and would not boot into the Wii Menu at all.

I restarted my Wii and booted into maintenance mode (holding + & - then hitting A at the health screen) which booted to the Wii Menu fine. I then restarted again and saw the same error. A few reboots later, the error went away and now loads into the Wii Menu just fine.

Doing a bit of research online, it appear that this has to do with games that use the Wii Balance Board. Has anyone else experienced this error, and do you know of any solutions to prevent it from happening again?

So... I ripped some Wii games (CleanRip), now I have some big honkin' ISOs. (for instance, Xenoblade seems to be about 7.9 GB) Will they work with the USB loader like this, or what?

Also, what about Dolphin? Will it play these? What about opening the ISO up and seeing the undoubtedly fascinating mysteries within? Is there a guide for any of this stuff?

(I realize at this point it's annoyingly close to a "piracy guide", so I'll understand if the answer is no)
Yes, Cfg will play those .iso files just fine. You will need to read the README of Cfg to determine how to name those files correctly so that Cfg will use them. Perhaps just look at some of the games you already ripped with Cfg as you will use the same naming style. Dolphin will play them too.

Hmm... I guess I might have to check out that file. Nobody has complained before, but there seems to have been too many lately to ignore. Perhaps it's been partially corrupted on the Wiki site (I have had this happen before).

Incidentally, your editing in the Configurator did not change meta.xml. It sounds like you changed config.txt instead. Editing meta.xml means it would be 248 right from the start.

And just to confirm, did you Right-Click the link then choose 'Save As' when downloading from the tutorial? If you simply click it (which will open it in XML view) and then save, it might be adding some corruption.

As for the Forwarder, is your Wii Firmware up to date? If not, update it and/or install IOS58 again according to the instructions on the Forwarder page.

Don't worry about the DSI Error. You did the right thing to correct for it (running the app again).

I did 3 things actually:

1) Open the original meta.xml and add the argument ios=248 line (in XML syntax) there.
2) Save as from the link, then copy the file to overwrite the original meta.xml. Open the xml in notepad to make sure the argument ios=248 line was there.
3) Open the Configurator. First made the option to use IOS 248 in config.txt. Then go to the tab (forgot which one) that has the meta.xml file loaded into a small multiline textbox. Add the argument ios=248 line there, then click on "Write meta.xml" to overwrite the existing meta.xml. Open the xml in notepad to make sure the argument ios=248 line was there.

#1 and #2 doesn't work. However #3 works so I guess I am happy.

I supposed part of the reason is my Wii was soft modded long ago by installing a bunch of stuff like "IOS downgrader", cIOS36, IOS 249 that is no longer used by the new guide. I installed d2x, IOS236, IOS58, new homebrew channel, new WAD Manager and I think everything should be fine now.

Just wonder if anyone has the slow wifi problem. I am getting lots of disconnection even for downloading from NUS / software update / covers. I am trying FTPii now and it max out at 64kbs. Every other wireless device is better than that.

I have a touchpad in the same room, and that stream video fine at 3 Mbps. So at the very least the wireless is capable at more than 64Kbps.

It's funny that people have been asking about that damn Gamecube loader for almost 4 years now, and no one here is discussing it.

It was discussed earlier, but aside that there's not much to discuss.
Is still a work in progress, updates seem to be released every week. They recommend those that get a stable version that runs their games to stay with that version, you still need GameCube Memory Cards (SD saves are experimental at the moment), GCN controller and it only works on SD Cards (and will stay that way forever it seems; so far limited to up to 32GB).

There's a Gamecube USB loader?
SD Loader. :p
They basically found out a loophole on the whole "Wii on GameCube mode doesn't recognize USBs" which turned out that SD Cards still worked in that mode; which can be used to rip games and in some games even save to it. You need a Wii or GCN disc in the tray all the time too.

And with recent Wiis not including GCN ports of any kind, those with newer units can't jump into it.

Guess if there's more interest either Clipper will update the Wiki accordingly or a new thread will be created.

Well I think it's excellent, you can use USB Loader and it integrates it just like the Gamecube games are part of your library, covers and all.

That too.
So far from what I've seen it is really cool and well integrated with the current Wii stuff. If they can iron the no needing a memory card and even find a workaround for games with streaming music; it could be amazing.

If anything it is a nice alternative for those with a few GameCube games ; so they can have all Wii games and GCN games in one place without needing to get up and swap discs for anything.

For those of you running GameCube backup launcher off a USB HDD. How's the compatibility? In particular I'd like to run Skies of Arcadia off an external HDD. Is this possible now?

Wait... Wait... What? A GameCube loader? YES!
Finally. Could have come sooner though. Would have saved me from buying new NGC memory cards but... Still happy. Is there a program to get Gamecube saves finally btw?

I dunno, never heard of Tinyload. Gecko works well enough with the two games I tried with it (Kururin Squash! and Mr. Driller Land, although the former has glitchy font and the latter is impossible to save your progress in regardless of what program you use to play it (unless you play it in Dolphin or a hard-modded gamecube))

How does one do this? The only guide I followed had me using a separate program for launching GCN games.

You can use Neogamma, a modded version of Cfg -which I don't know if Clipper is aware of ..:p- and WiiFlow; but they all read from the SD Card. In the settings you can set it to display titles from either device (SD or USB) or both (SD and USB).
GameCube games only can be stored on the SD Card if you want to actually play them.

Compatibility varies and is still updated on a frequent basis; which is why they recommend that if you have an earlier version that plays all the games; to continue with that; and only use other versions to test things out.

According to the compatibility lists, Skies of Arcadia works without problems.

Awesome, thanks. Playing them off SD card is still better than having to put the disc in. Yeah yeah I'm lazy :P

No, it's SD, and USB will never, ever be possible.

Gamecube can use SD cards. What I think they did was reroute the functionality that SD Media Launcher used to provide from the memory card slot to the front slot of the Wii.

The game needs to be read from USB in order for USB loading to work, and the Gamecube could never use USB loading.

I'm aware of it, and it's not a mod of Cfg; it's its own thing. WiiPower, the guy behind it, is a really excellent coder and is responsible for many of the breakthroughs in Wii modding.

Ah! Thats's good to know.
Reading around, was always like "use this modded Cfg, don't use the original one"..which made it sound like it was some external unofficial version. :p

I've been trying to copy Xenoblade to a USB memory stick for the last couple of days with no success. I've tried copying to the drive when it's formatted to both WBFS and FAT32 and I've tried to do it in both cfg and USB Loader GX and in all cases, the install process hangs. Any clue what I might be overlooking?

The whole Gamecube thing looks somewhat easy to do. I think I'll wait on it a bit though since I'll need a class 10 SD card from what I'm reading. Maybe the wiki will have a nice right up on how to do it some day. Out of curiosity what is the whole deal with Gamecube streaming anyway? As far I remember mod chips couldn't do, Wode couldn't do it and now this new app can't handle it. Anyone know why that is?

Thanks. Haven't really messed with the USB loader yet, but got Dolphin compiled and running... I'd call it fine, but my computer isn't fast enough. smh. Oh well, maybe it's time for KCacheGrind. Depends how much free time I have.

It could be something wrong with your disk.

But if I were you, I'd try the Wii homebrew CleanRip. It'll rip your game's ISO to a FAT32 or preferably NTFS drive (either USB or SD). It doesn't use any cIOS, only your Wii's stock iOS that retail games use, so the results should work, unless there's really something wrong with your disk.

Assuming it works, it will drop the raw ISO file on your drive, and you'll then be able to properly install the ISO to WBFS/FAT32 using a PC WBFS program. like Wii Backup Manager (Windows, awesome) or JWBFS (Java, all platforms).

Ah, I see. Many thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.

Jeez. I read the OP, but I guess I'm just terrible at looking up info on my own. I came here from the Dolphin thread (after clicking the link in its OP that brings me to this thread so I could learn how to rip games from my Wii) ... but I don't see anything. I'm sorry :(

So, yeah... what do I need to rip games from my Wii to use for Dolphin? Specifically GameCube games.

Need a bit of help with running others' save files. I semi-bricked my Wii a while back and restored it with ohnesschwarzenegger etc, but I lost all my save files, even my Xenoblade one with 65 hours on it. I found someone online who said they had all their save files at different points in the game, and I wanted to use one of their's to pick up where I left off. This is the link:

http://www.mediafire.com/?9jdbd1xwmi6gw

Now here's where I really need your help GAF. I really don't understand the readme and what it's asking me to do. I want to use a save file and put it on my Wii somehow, but I don't understand how to do it. I see XBsave files and the like, some small cmd prompt that knows each character/level that each save file holds, I just don't know how to use the treasure trove given to me. I'd really, REALLY appreciate it, if one of you more experienced GAF could help me out! Like a step by step on how to do this, because I can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks!!!

The most important information is actually in the second post of the thread. However, the tutorial linked there doesn't have any info on ripping GameCube games currently. Use the tutorial in the second post (or just click my custom tag as it's the same link) and once you have the HBC installed, you can install an app called CleanRip to rip your Gamecube games into a Dolphin compatible format.

The instructions in the readme within the pack save directory seem pretty comprehensive. You want to copy your save to the SD, then use pack save to extract the save, use the other app to replace the files with the other save files, then repack those into a data.bin file and copy that back to the Wii. At least, I think that's the idea. I didn't read too far into it.

Hi all, I read the FAQ but I was hoping someone could help answer a few specific questions before I do anything. I got a Wii off a fellow gaffer a while back. It used to have homebrew, but it was removed. The system is currently 4.3U firmware, but it asked me to update when I put a game in (either Rayman Origins or Skyward Sword iirc). Any idea what that update is and whether it affects my ability to homebrew? Also, if I download VC games then homebrew later will my purchases remain safe? I don't want to rush into soft modding my system until I research it more thoroughly, and am hoping I can DL games before then without hindering my future options. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I meant that post. I wouldn't have gotten any useful information because reading it was like reading a foreign language :P Thank you for telling me what to do.

With CFG USB loader, if you go to update it via an online connection it gives you a choice of updating with or without the meta file. Is there any preferred choice when updating - and any reason why it gives you both options in the first place? Thanks.

The update is to update one or more IOSes on the Wii to better support Skyward Sword. It will not affect your ability to run homebrew. Installing homebrew will not affect your VC purchases, neither the ones you bought beforehand nor the ones you are yet to buy.

Updating with meta.xml will keep your version number displayed in the HBC correct. Earlier versions of Cfg actually overwrote the whole meta.xml, but that was bad if you had your own custom stuff in there, like a different title for sorting reasons. Thus, the option to ignore it was added. When we changed the meta.xml code so that it only changes the date and version number, we could have removed that option, but we left it there in case it might break something in future.

Thank you kind sir. Now to wrangle up some Nintendo Points and go crazy with the import games I've been eyeballing forever.

I know you said you didn't read too much into it, but thanks for your help. When you said copy my save to the SD, do you mean make a Xenoblade file on my Wii from my game? Or am I using the ones that were provided? I tried copying one of my files to an SD (with my homebrew apps on it too, so maybe that's why) and I couldn't find the file when I opened the SDcard. IS that what you mean by using the pack save to extract the save? Should I have used perhaps a clean SD when copying the save from my Wii to my SD.

You should try just using the normal Wii save copying mechanism first. That will give you a data.bin file on your SD card in a sub-directory of the 'private' directory on the SD card. The sub-directory will be named something like /private/Wii/title/SX4P/, but I forget the exact path.

It looks like there's another GameCube loader that will be released soon: Devolution.

It apparently can boot from SD and USB, despite what I've heard about USB loading being impossible for GameCube games.

The developer also plans for you to be able to use other controllers besides GameCube controllers to play games.

Sounds interesting..but too early to say.
The aim is to among other things allow USB, which the original Dios Mios kinda did; but aside a few games that worked; couldn't get much out of it which is why they stopped work on it.

Also aiming to allow the use of Wii remote, etc. instead of the GameCube controllers.

And the description sounds weird too, the part of that the Wii "is basically a GameCube" as the reason of why it works, and the plan is to also let people with recent Wii (i.e. the ones without GCN stuff) to play those games. But, has it been confirmed that the new Wiis still recognize the discs? The plans is also to not use it as a "warez loader"; so you'll either need the disc inside all the time or you'll need to rip each game directly into some specific format that only this program recognizes.

But, keeping an eye out. Sounds interesting and if he manages to do what aims to do; it could be great.

I installed HBC using the GAF Wiki and then tried to install the Dios Mios Lite on my Wii, but I only get a "-2011" something error when I try to install the WAD on various IOSes :/

Shouldn't be a problem from what I've seen, if you followed the GAF Wiki. 236 is the IOS that should be used when installing wads from what I remember.

Ok, I finally got around to trying this out, and everything seems to be working out for the most part. HBC and all the apps relevant to running games off a hard drive installed just fine, and I installed two of my games that seem to play well enough, even loading my existing saves.

However, I seem to be having a problem with Gamecube games. My nephews love playing NFS Hot Pursuit 2 when they come to visit, so since I think the last time they were here they were hesitant on playing the Wii without telling me why (I found out after they left that it was making some grinding noises as though something was loose (which I could probably fix, but DealExtreme has been stuck on "Waiting for Supplier" for weeks on a trigram screwdriver) I figured they thought they had broken it and didn't want to say anything.) so I decided to install all this stuff so they didn't need to worry about discs. Less chance of them breaking discs this way too. :)

I did notice that when I went to install it off the disc, it was listing "sd: ntfs 1.6GB of 1.9GB free" instead of the hard drive I had plugged in, despite the two Wii games installing to the hard drive without incident. I pulled out the SD card and tried to install it just to see what would happen, and it seems like the install failed, so it really did write it to the SD card the first time. Any idea how to make it not do that?

Shouldn't be a problem from what I've seen, if you followed the GAF Wiki. 236 is the IOS that should be used when installing wads from what I remember.

I don't get 236 as an option when I try to install. These are what I have available (according to WAD manager v1.7): 4, 9-17, 20-22, 28, 30, 31, 33-38, 40, 41, 43, 45, 46, 48, 50-53, 55-58, 60, 61, 70, 80, 222, 223, 247-250, 254.

I tried installing using 249, 250 and 254 I think, but then it just didn't want to complete the installation.

I already have Configurable USB Loader , gecko, homebrew browser and d2x cIOS installer (guess I don't need this last one?) on the SD-card, along with Wad Manager 1.7 and NeoGamma (not yet opened as it's the next step in installing DML).

Edit: Ofcourse, I hadn't installed the IOS236 Installer ... d'oh! Seems to be working now. I'll update later to share my stupidity :D

Edit2: Works like a charm now, thanks for the tip regarding IOS236 fernoca, I can't seem to remember to have read it anywhere, must have crossed my eyes somewhere.

Nope. Dios Mios Lite, which I assume you are using as it's the only current way to play GCN games, only works off the SD card.

Nuts, guess I had skimmed over the last couple posts but didn't really read them to know I needed something else for GC games. Oh well, here's hoping that other group makes something work.

On another note, is there an easy way to convert the ripped games to something I can run with Dolphin on my PC?
