Oh I'm aware. Nintendo's $8B is more than MS would ever devote to XBOX again. And it's certainly not something Nintendo intend to squander either.

But if anything the 360 has shown that a loss-leading model can still work.

I don't think they want to take a significant loss on hardware again, but I don't think they'd be as averse to a loss on hardware assuming a profitable or break-even launch business overall.

It depends. If nextbox and PS4 are coming in 2013, I would agree. If they are coming later than than I think Wii U won't be able to run it while next box and PS4 will.

How much gb is Nintendo going to put in Wii U btw?

That's assuming Wii-U is on the same ballpark as PS4/XB3, which it probably is not.

Probably. It reads like a summary of all the rumors in the last wii u speculation thread.

The guy ended up defending himself though on the IGN boards. He's apparently been right about rumors in the past, so at the very least he has some connection with inside sources. Seems strange though that he'd report the story as an interview when a simple "inside source leak" would be so much simpler to pull off. I'm not holding my breath on it being legit though. We'll be able to see how accurate he is in a few months.

But hell, look who I'm talking to. It's not like you're going to entertain the thought of a counter opinion to yours. You've made up your mind already.

It was just how he refered to the version of UE3 they made the Samaritian demo out of, whether there actually is a 3.9 or he was just dumbing it down for that interview I don't think we know. I believe it was actually something like 3.975 that he said.

I'm just going to reiterate what I said on the previous page. People need to stop thinking that engines and their editors are intimately tied and scaled to top of the line specs and hardware as a baseline. Whether or not UE4 is supported on Wii U is merely limited by what technology components they deem integral to the operation of UE4. For example: what level of DX or GL does X card support? Does it support fixed or flexible pipelines? It is not based on the raw power of the device, as the idea of an engine is to be flexible, powerful and as low-impacting as possible, so you can squeeze as much as you can out of it.

SOURCE: someone whose job it is to make/maintain an editor and its engine.
 
God I'm already sick of these Mark Rein hype threads. UE is amazing. Best thing ever. Ice cream for everyone. Yadda yadda.

What reason did people expect Sony to have the graphical powerhouse this gen when they had on all counts the computationally weakest console the generation before?

Microsoft and Sony will still likely be above Wii U in power. Nintendo's not anti-technology, though. See NES, SNES, N64, GCN. Wii was their only system to not jump ahead a generation.

The idea is that Nintendo will be using industry-standard methodologies this time around, though, so the engines, including UE4, should scale to it just fine making cross-platform ports possible without having to essentially make an entirely new game. Wii was way different architecturally than PCs/360 this past generation, so there wasn't a real easy way to port games without essentially remaking the game. Wii U porting should be very straightforward (as long as it supports the right standards), in comparison.

People put things in context. The Gamecube & Xbox coming out a year & half later and technically, the Dreamcast was part of that generation also.

And while in that aspect they played it safe; they also started the whole motion controls aspect/hype, balance boards, etc.

Seriously, given the leaps and bounds Nintendo have made in the last year in their online presence, why do people refuse to concede that Nintendo are in fact capable of change when they feel the time is right?
 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I heard "gorgeous", it wasn't a criticism.

He just says they can do better.

Because with the PS2, Sony was really only competing with themselves. The PS1's success preemptively guaranteed that the PS2 would be the dominant console of it's generation, so they really didn't have any reason to care what the competition was doing. Now though they're in a pissing contest with MS, so what ever one does, the other will try to beat.

He's praising the demo at the same time pimping his engine while giving a good estimation at what the wii U can output.

It's all about art style anyhow. Mario Galaxy at hd res can easily stack up visually to most modern games, not in terms of polygon pushing, but in terms of 'looking good'.

answered this before - it's that way because Iwata stated at the TGS pre-Wii launch that he believed that increased polycounts etc was a dead end avenue for gaming and that they would look to expand the market by giving gamers a unique experience that didn't further the tech race

Wii U isn't going to try and match X720/PS4 spec wise, it's going to offer a different experience to what people are used to. And HURRAH for that and HURRAH for Nintendo for doing it. I have no idea why Nintendo fans don't embrace what is a much needed different outlook. I don't even expect every Nintendo machine to be a hit, but i love that they aren't just throwing out a machine that follows the pack. Obviously it would be nice for them to go toe-to-toe with Sony/MS but i don't think that's on the agenda yet.
 
Sorry, but games and awesome graphics aren't enough for me to use that U-pad. Give me a traditional controller (360-style preferably) and then you may get my money, Nintendo.

Conversely, they've also made statements that not being able to run current gen games hurt support for their platform. Nintendo is very aware of that problem. Even the most optimistic rumors point to Wii U just being able to run UE4. No one is expecting Wii U to be a graphical powerhouse.

Unless you're coming from the viewpoint that you need a graphical powerhouse to run UE4 at all, which is something we don't really know much about yet (regardless of Mark Rein's chest thumping).

It's all guess work but given what they seem to be saying about UE3 then it sounds like UE4 is for a certain base spec. I'd guess 580+ and above - that, as crazy as it sounds and i'll stand on my own, i expect X720/PS4 to be there or there abouts. You can all laugh in your own time.

UE4 will just shove the baseline up for what constitutes "full features" - Wii U is likely to be able to run a good subset of that, and UE3.x fully. So Wii U wiil, without doubt, be able to run "next gen" games.

UE3 can do better than the Zelda tech demo? At what? Popping in textures and making the shadows jumpy?
