Despite being a huge fan of mecha I have never fully watched TTGL, so I decided "hey why not?". I think two big things pulled the anime down for me, the fans, and spoilers. The fans for hyping the anime up as the best mecha anime ever, and spoilers for obviously telling me where the show will go.

Episode 8 is probably my favorite episode so far, the ones I would call good would be 8 and 15. The rest are decent, and all of them are hurt by knowing how over-the-top the show will get. Feats seem less impressive knowing what happens later in the show, and that hurts the show for me. I can see why people enjoy the anime, and I enjoy it too, but my expectations seemed a bit too high.

Some people are crediting them to Araki, but they're definitely by Umakoshi.

So, can I watch Lost Canvas without having seen anything Saint Seiya related before it? (I've seen a lot of the original TV show as a kid, but I don't remember shit, also it was on Italian TV and i can't speak Italian, so, yeah...)
I do plan on watching it all someday, but there's so much of it, and I kind of want to see Lost Canvas only for now. But if it requires prior knowledge, I'll leave it for after I've watched the original series and the OVAs.

Nope. It's a prequel taking place more 200 years earlier. There might be a few things you'd catch if you watched the original and you'd already know the techniques of certain Saints (which may or may not enhance your experience), but it's not required at all and I wouldn't even recommend it.

That's generally how I felt about it. I think people get caught up in the scale of it all. it's pretty great but not the second coming like some treat it.

I would hate to have known about that before hand. TTGL was one of the few anime last year that had me attached to my computer on netflix for like an entire day to run through it. Usually no other anime beyond marathons of the long running can keep me hooked for so long.

Simon/Viral were my favorites in it.

One really good thing about TTGL is that it got some people into mecha that wouldn't try it before hand. Mecha seems to have some negative stigma around it in certain parts of the anime fandom, so "entry" shows like TTGL are really nice to have. But there are always people that enjoyed TTGL and never give other mecha anime a shot.

Lol. Anime is rapidly dying. It needs a shot in the arm quick.

You can't raise the dead that easily.
Haibane Renmei is sufficiently melodramatic and yet it doesnt crack the top ten. Thats the biggest problem with the list. HR is actually great though.
I really don't think that Haibane Renmei qualifies as 'melodrama' at any point. It has honest, dramatic points, sure, but it's not 'melodramatic'.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor 3-6

Tylor is the best. always so relaxed in the face of peril. Surrounded by enemies?
just surrender.
Your crew
is destroying the ship? Just let them do whatever they want.
Episode 6 takes the cake so far though, because damn if that twist wasn't great. Those old crooks fucking deserved it lol, and while
they are busy saving their lives, Tylor is busy drinking some alcohol with the doctor and th hot nurse/spy.

They taketh Madhouse, they giveth MAPPA. They taketh 4C, they giveth... We're in for something good by my calculations.

Tylor's such a boss. Glad to see you're enjoying it. It's still almost impossible to believe that Bee Trains very own Mashimo was at the helms there.

Thanks, guess I'll watch Lost Canvas soon, then. It looks pretty good.
What's your opinion on it, anyway, since I'm already asking stuff?

In this episode, the karuta club learn that to be a well-rounded human being you have to do more than spend every waking second of your life obsessing over karuta. To that end there are activities covered in this episode other than karuta! This made the episode far more interesting than many in this series, even though there was nothing particularly impressive on the production end.

If only this shows focus was as well rounded as this episode the characters and the world that they inhabit might be more fleshed out than it is.

I think it's great. I watched all of Saint Seiya and the other OVAs a few months ago, but found them rather subpar due to the limited animation, constant asspulls and shallow characters. Lost Canvas feels like a better production overall in both animation and writing. The characters felt like characters instead of living movesets and the battles maintained a level of tension while still pulling off believable strategies. And of course the animation was much better as the special techniques looked like more than people just doing poses while the backgrounds change.

Definitely recommended.

This is why sports (shows) suck. It's weird because I still have fond memories of OoFuri, which is basically baseball masturbation for baseball fan(girls) with people talking about how you have to properly hold a ball in order to pitch a slider or whatever... but man, when all the drama is tied up on winning and losing, you basically have very few options as a storyteller.

I feel like there's a way to balance the sports and the shoujo. Strangely, the only thing that comes to mind is that volleyball manga, Crimson Hero, but I have no idea what it's like.

Nice, now I'm kind of hyped :)

Violinist of Hamelin 1

This series is off to a charming start as I enjoy this type of setting. I'll glad the soundtrack delivers thus far given the naming conventions and whatnot. Also that's a big violin. I was warned the animation was cheap (or non-existent) but that doesn't translate into anything obnoxious thus far.

I like you.

Man that looks so much better it's not even funny. Now I like the actual designs even less.

Just a warning, it's still technically ongoing. We have no idea when there's going to be more if ever, especially now that Omega is coming up. Sucks too since we're at the final section of it.

Fortunately, the manga is fully translated, so that's always an option. I'm still holding off, but I'll read it if there's no new announcement within a year or so.

Tylor's character is so much fun to watch. XD

There's nothing inherent in being a sports show that precludes your story and characters from exploring lots of non-sports related topics e.g. : family, friends, romance, work whatever. Obviously the big matches will be important to the characters and the story of the show regardless, but there's always the potential to look at the characters outside of that particular setting. It can be about other stuff.

I guess Tomorrow's Joe is a bit like that, but I haven't watched it.

It can be, but the case to be made is that most sports anime/manga usually end up work-ethic porn anyway.

Not every show can be Friday Night Lights or even Adachi. It's unfortunate. Even the whole storyline about Chihaya being the "inferior" sister has basically been dropped at this point.

Yeah. I used to like procedure-porn, but there needs to be something more than that to keep me invested long term. I almost wished that Madhouse skipped through the karuta tournament and jumped to some of the later volume stuff in the manga, since there are at least new twists on playing the game rather than "it's so hard to lose but I need to keep trying".

That was about as much of a storyline as Arata's girlfriend.

Yup. It feels like this train is beginning to derail after that really amazing start. I still enjoy the series and I very much adore the soundtrack, but the actual storytelling leaves me wanting.

Watching it without any previous knowledge is the best way to experience it. I watched it not knowing what the hell it was about at all at a bros place, and just sat there and watched the whole thing straight through.

It was probably one of the most awesome experiences of my life, and watching it untainted by any expectations is what made that experience for me.

I laughed, not because this was funny or amusing or...anything really, but because I discovered that I seem to be subconciously counting how many times they've use the exact same pedo joke over and over and over...

I'm not going to rewatch the previous 10 shorts to confirm but I think it now stands at 9 out of 11.
