NFL Off-Season Thread: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

Chargers locked up Jared Gaither for 4 years, good. Now that we know what our O-line will look like, AJ needs to work on that defense. Lots of holes to fill.

Fellow Bears fans, who do you want with the top pick? Originally I wanted a wide receiver, but the Marshall trade changes this. The offensive line still needs to be upgraded, and Mike Adams would be a good choice! If Carimi is fully healthy from injury the Bears oline could have a great young future core at each tackle position! I don't believe Jonathan Martin will last long enough to fall to them.

Mike Adams is going to be a bust. I don't want to bust out on a tackle for the 3rd time in the past 5 years. Gabe may never be healthy again. That knee might be a chronic injury. Hate that the Bears drafted 2 tackles in Williams and BearJew that other teams had flagged for injury concerns. I don't think Adams has the health concerns but he's a complete stiff. If were drafting OL in the first round I'd take David DeCastro if he falls to us, but I wouldn't reach for a marginal first round talent like Adams at 19.

Honestly Emery should take the best talent available at 19. If it's WR, OL, LB, CB, Safety, DL, I don't really care as long as he's good. Team has holes everywhere, so I don't think we can be stuck drafting for need.

I'd be cool with any of the following at number 19:
Mike Floyd WR
David DeCastro OG
Michael Brockers DT
Dontari Poe DT
Luke Kuechly LB
Whitney Mercilus DE
Kendall Wright WR

Bears front loaded the first two years. They didn't pour it all into one season. Guess the team has a smarter money guy working those contracts!

Feels good to get a couple more million in cap space thanks to the NFC East bungles!

They did not break any rules that existed at the time or that have been instituted since regarding the uncapped year. All contracts were reviewed and signed of on by the NFL. The way that the penalties were agreed upon and imposed by the league did not follow league guidelines and bylaws. The Redskins and Cowboys did not break a single rule so to say they were stupid is absurd.

NFL told teams 6 times not to do what the cowboys/redskins did and they still did it. they have no one to blame but themselves.

I don't see that as mattering much. Dallas is in it til the end with Romo.

Really? I still cant get over Jerry saying the only difference between the Giants this year and the Cowboys was Eli. I think Jerry only cares about winning and he would dump anyone if he thought it would help the team.

yankee, that could be based mostly on my fears and doubt, I would certainly hope you're right.

No that is collusion, it is against the law. There were no agreed rules in place for the NFL to enforce these warnings. Both teams followed the rules that were in place at the time

So, if you're Matt Flynn, why on earth would you go to the Browns? You know you're not winning any meaningful games in that division and every team looking for a QB will make you rich.

well if a team gives you $20 million guaranteed you're rich. but if a team is going to give you $25 million guaranteed (Browns?) then you're even RICHER!

But like, don't these guys have a competitive spirit? Because you give that up when you go to Cleveland. I mean, even we have a chance with a weakened division and easy schedule.

well look at drew brees and look at what the saints were when he went there. it could be their competitive spirit driving them even MORE to be the savior of a long suffering franchise

Well looky look at Mario Williams. Very competitive spirit. Thats why he went to buffalo first!

You should read this article:

But that doesn’t matter to the NFL, which defines collusion very specifically under the collective bargaining agreement so as to protect itself and, as usual, operates by its own laws. After the story broke Monday, the league released a statement that said, “The Management Council Executive Committee determined that the contract practices of a small number of clubs during the 2010 league year created an unacceptable risk to future competitive balance, particularly in light of the relatively modest salary cap growth projected for the new agreement's early years.”

The statement goes on to say that the settlement, which resulted in the punishments for Dallas and Washington, was agreed upon by the parties in the collective bargaining agreement, which it was. The NFLPA agreed not to pursue collusion charges against the league in exchange for the league agreeing (a) not to cut the 2012 salary cap and (b) to spread the Redskins’ and Cowboys’ penalty money among the other teams so that the total amount of cap space league-wide would not be reduced.

Effectively, the league found a way to excuse itself for engaging in an illegal act and got the players to sign off on it.

i.e. you have the CBA which was agreed upon by all parties exonerating the NFL of any such acts. You can say it's illegal all you like but when the NFLPA and players signed off and agreed to bring no such charges against the league your definition of "against the law" is meaningless. They wanted the higher cap and they got it. This is the cost.

Sure. But NO also had tried to build some talent around Brees. Who on the Browns is currently worth a shit? Hillis? Lol.

Hey, if him and Kyle stay healthy, we'll have our defense pretty well taken care of.

Then, we'll offer Flynn the rest of the money we didn't throw at Mario

It's all good. I would really like to see them succeed.

they obviously didn't or else there wouldn't be a penalty

What? This circular logic is absurd...

Police officer: I pulled you over because you were speeding, here's a ticket for $200

Driver: Bye there's no speed limit on this road, I didn't break the law

Police officer: Well if you didn't break the law why do you have that ticket?

If anyone deserves all that money it's CJ. I followed his career ever since his yellow jacket days and he has been a beast throughout his career.

Just saw the Calvin Johnson signing. Wow. Way to go though, he definitely deserved it.

Still upset we couldn't give our star receiver a big contract but..

Chargers locked up Jared Gaither for 4 years, good. Now that we know what our O-line will look like, AJ needs to work on that defense. Lots of holes to fill.

... this is very good news.

That makes no difference under the law. That CBA was agreed upon after the collision occurred, you cannot retroactively sign the agreement and then day that what you previously did was no longer illegal.

Furthermore, the reason I got onto this issue today is because it has now come out that the NFL and NFLPA did NOT follow the procedures required by the CBA to impose these sanctions. This is completely bogus in so many ways

Really? I still cant get over Jerry saying the only difference between the Giants this year and the Cowboys was Eli. I think Jerry only cares about winning and he would dump anyone if he thought it would help the team.

Jerry never said this, was reported completely wrong when the story first broke.

Chicago did exactly the same thing with Peppers contract and saw no repercussions. Anyway, cap dumping was not illegal during that season and the way that the NFL had gone about enforcing these factions is in violation of their own rules.

And the NFL approved the contracts.

Jerry is still an idiot. Owner/GM doesn't work anymore, actually it only worked for JJ when there was no CBA. Yeah I know they won the SB in 95, but they were leftover non-CBA contracts.

I followed this thread pretty much all last year but never posted. As a Falcons fan just wanted to see what others thought of all the new staff changes this off season? People seem pretty positive about the addition of nolan but I haven't heard much of anything about the other new staff.

Didn't see this till now..Reggie Wayne resigned with the Colts?

Wasn't it assumed he would go wherever Manning would go? Why would he want to play for a team completely rebuilding?

update:

Mike Garafolo ‏ @MikeGarafolo

Giants free agent Aaron Ross schedules visit with Washington Redskins

Vikings are also in the mix for Mario Manningham according to Schefter. Bills would be a good spot for him, IMO. Stevie Johnson on the other side would make for a great tandem.

17.5 million reasons over 3 years.

I'm sure he would like to play with Manning but he'd probably have had to take less money since Peypey will probably expect a pretty big contract. The Colts are a mess but without Garcon that leaves Wayne at the top of the totem pole to catch passes from Luck. (Collie obviously is still there, health permitting)

Oh I was wondering why ESPN was reporting it but I didnt hear it anywhere else.

They asked Jerry what was the biggest difference between the Giants "then" (i.e. when everyone wanted Coughlin fired) and now (on their way to the NFCC) was Eli and that he is playing at a high level. He then went on to state that the defense also upped their game, while Romo was playing at a high level and his defense didn't help him any as Eli's did.

Which it never is for Collie.

I only heard th part about Eli upping his game, so he wasnt basing Romo but instead their D. I still think Jerry is the kind of guy that would dump him if he could get someone better but I guess we will never know.

No it's more like:

Officer: joe there's no speed limit on this private road we own but I'm telling you right now don't go over 50 or I'm going to give you a ticket. I'm going to tell you this 5 more times: don't do it or there will be consequences.

Joe: lulz sure bro!

I've been a Cowboy fan since I was 4 and I agree 100% hes an idiot. I was just pointing out that Calvin Watkins had reported false information at the time Jerry supposedly said those comments I addressed in another post.

In Garrett we Trust

In that first Cowboys-Giants game, the Giants defense was much worse than what the Cowboys did. It took Romo to overthrow an open receiver for the Giants to have another opportunity. It was only until the final couple games the Giants defense started clicking and guys were making better tackles, not being lost in coverage, and Tuck feeling better.
